The staff is superb. They deserve a better facility. The ground floor's promise is not realized in the jerry-built upper floors. Cramped room, tatty, soiled carpet, poor soundproofing, cots masquerading as "beds"!

Reception, rooms, noise, cost. THE HOTEL CHARGED ME THE FULL STAY IN ADVANCE ALTHOUGH MY RESERVATION CLEARLY STATED IT WAS ONLY A GUARANTEE. THEN, THEY PUT ME IN A ROOM IN ANOTHER BUILDING, NOT MENTIONED IN THE HOTEL DESCRIPTION AND FAR FROM ME AS NICE AS THE ROOMS IN THE MAIN BUILDING.

This is the kind of hotel I like to stay in when visiting a European city. It was away from the noise and bustle of the city centre yet within walking distance of everything one would want. It was next to the Vondelpark and I enjoyed watching wild parrots flying past my window. The theme was Philosophy and there were quotations from philosophers and paperbacks on philosphy in various languages throughout the hotel. This is the sort of quirky detail that appeals to me. We did not take breakfast in the hotel as there were so many different places nearby to try out. The staff were friendly and helpful. All in all it enhanced our enjoyment of Amsterdam.

Great value for the price. Rooms were small, but very quiet and comfortable. Staff were helpful, friendly. The hotel is in a residential area and the main shops and cafes are about several blocks away. No free breakfast, no free coffee or tea. They charged 15 Euros for breakfast, so I never bought it. I was charged 2.50 Euros for a cup of tea.

Using Booking.com made this usually rather pricey hotel a better deal. Love the staff and the fact they always try to give me my favourite room, I have stayed here many times. The Wifi is great but best in the reception/bar area which is pleasant and relaxing. The location is good if you want to run around the Vondel Park in the mornings or evenings and access to the city centre is easy and quick whther you are walking or taking the tram. Nearby there is also a nice bar/restaurant that I would certainly recommend; Cafe de Toog is ideal for chilling out with your newspaper and enjoying a cool beer with some good food. I feel €15 for breakfast is a bit much. However, one morning I went to a nearby Coffee cafe and after having a coffee with two croissants, strawberry jam and a fruit juice I found I had spent €11 so if you eat a lot for breakfast it can be ok. I did find another nearby cafe where I had coffee with free refills, two fried eggs and a pile of bacon on toast all for €7.50 which is a much better deal if a little more basic..

Initially, I was given a small room with small windows and a dirty carpet (not comfortable to walk on w bare feet!). I didn't notice the latter till later that first night because I had just dumped the suitcase and run to a museum before closing time. The next morning, I told the receptionist about the dirty carpet and a leak under the bathroom sink and was immediately moved to a bright room, much larger. It was very clean and I enjoyed my next 4 days there. I would highly recommend the Filosoof and hope to return w my husband sometime. It is a cozy place and the reception is very accommodating.

Clean room with high ceiling. Good degree of privacy. Unintrusive staff. The villa we stayed in looked poorly maintained -epecially he entrance and corridor ..cracked paint etc. The toilet in our bedroom also looked tired and worn out.

The room was named "nature" and it was pretty good! The bed was very comfortable and the sight from the window great! As far as our experience is concerned everything was very nice, so I doubtless suggest this hotel to everyone. Nothing

The staff is very friendly, polite and helpful. There is a charming bar in the hotel and a lovely garden inside. The locations is good, close to the city center by tram or by foot (5 min). Good internet signal in the rooms and lift. The breakfast was expensive and there wasn't hairdryer in the room (but one could borrow form the front desk).

The room was very quiet except at about 4 am in the morning when people where hooting and talking loudly out in the garden, right below our window.. The staff were very helpful with restaurant choices. The room was very small. There was nowhere to put clothes that were unpacked. The only window in the room was located way from the bed part of the room, so basically there was no view whatsoever. The shower was just a torrent from the centre of the showerhead--no adjustment was possible. In other words the shower did not work properly. Most importantly, we found the room price excessive for the quality of the room.

When I had breakfast I saw a philosophical test. I mentally answered to the questions, and I checked. The questions were relatively easy for me, although I don't pretend to be an expert. But sometimes the texts were misleading. They mentioned the negative answer of Darwin about the request of Marx of a dedication to him for his book Das Kapital. The next question was about Darwin. They asked "What did Darwin study in 1831?". The answer is theology. But after Darwin got a degree in medicine; and the evidence for natural evolution is compelling, according to Richard Dawkins and many Nobel prizes for medicine. As a peaceful man and humble writer in the fields of philosophy and psychology, I couldn't ask the same to Italo Calvino, author of the American lessons, and to Friedrich Nietzsche, who was charmed by natural evolutionism in Die frohliche wissenschaft. I hope that their scholars will forgive me. I don't know anything of German language. But with Dutch language I have some hope. Conversations in the hotel were wonderful.

The hotel is in a lovely part of Amsterdam, with parks, museums and cafes nearby. We had a villa room, which is in a building across the street from the main hotel, but had the benefit of leading on to a garden, which was a nice touch. When we arrived late in teh evening, we found that we had a twin room. When we said that we'd booked a double, the receptionist moved us to another room, which was great for us but not for the people checking in later that were bumped into the twin. The bed was comfortable. The hotel markets itself as a boutique hotel, but this just seems to be an excuse for gaudy decor and over charging. We paid 144 euros a night for an adequate room with horrible decor (the rooms are supposedly themed on different philosophers, with Wittgenstein apparently represented by nasty paintings and quotes on the wall and badly painted furniture. The hotel certainly looked more tasteful on the website. The room was also quite small and dark and the bathroom had seen better days. Overall we were disappointed; we were expected something more special, particularly for the price.

Very well placed for visiting the excellent museums in Amsterdam. An interesting building with an excellent garden combined with a pleasant easy atmosphere. Our room was in a poor decorative state and rather small but the bathroom was fine. Breakfast was expernsive for what you got.
