The hotel was very quirky and in a good location, close to pretty much everything. The staff were very helpful and always answered any queries we had. We would certainly recommend this hotel to family and friends!
The specification for the room stated there would be a hairdryer in the room however there was not. I had to ask for one which was then provided although this was after getting my hair wet! The breakfast was a bit sparse with really just toast, cheese, ham and cake. Other than these few points, we really enjoyed our stay!
The outstanding feature of the Max Brown Hotel is its location right on the beautiful Herengracht in the heart of old Amsterdam. It occupies three historic canal houses. Rooms are small but clean and nicely furnished, bathroom is good and breakfast is available. The reception staff are friendly and helpful. Highly recommended! Di Canberra
The penalty for the beautiful canal view from the bedroom was a bit of noise through the window at night but it wasn't a significant problem.
The accommodation is in a very convenient spot - short walk to the station and the cruise terminal and the centre of Amsterdam. It is in a scenic and quietish area with plenty of places to eat and drink near by, and they have bike rental. Staff were very, very helpful. There is a breakfast of toast and cake included. The bed was one of the most comfortable of our trip.
The rooms are small, but this will probably be the case everywhere. The upper floors are accessed by a steep and narrow staircase - fine for us but may be a problem for less able visitors.
Easy walk from the station. Easy walk to attractions. Canal side location. Friendly staff.
Very steep steps and no lift so not suitable for the elderly or infirm. I did not realise this. Shared toilet which was also impossible small. The seperate toilet is mentioned but I just missed it. Room very small for the price.
No facilities in the room meant walking down 3 flights of stairs any time I wanted a cup of tea. No facilities also mean paying for said cups of tea or coffee. I'm sorry guys but when you're charging this much for a room, basics should be included. I travel a lot for business and pleasure and great location and decor are not enough by themselves to warrant your rates. Rigid staff who didn't even attempt to look after us when we arrived from a flight before check-in. Very small rooms.
Rooms, overall feel of the place, Luggage taken to room
Very helpful, cheering staff who makes even bad day much much better. Interesting interior design, old books on walls, very nice kitchen, bar. Hotel was renovated one month earlier. Centrally located, ten minutes walk from central station.
No elevator (Amsterdam forbids elevators in older building) but staff proposes themselves to carry bags (which is especially helpful on the third floor). Single room was very very small (about 4-5m2, incl. shower), toilet was outside (private, but you had to go out to common space in order to get there). No view as windows went on other part of the building.
Great place, great staff & lovely for a young couple to drink the special Wine and Roses left on the bed for us. Thank you millions Gaz & Hanna
Nothing was bad
The canal view room compensate the space tight small room.
Not only the room is small, the lighting is so dim. There is no smiling staff service.
Nothing besides location.
Top floor ventilation. The 'always on' shower fan sucked in the moldy enclosed skylight stink right past the bed. Rooms 109-111. AVOID. Went there to sleep as little as possible. The city was packed yet the bar was empty. Now I see why. Location is great but that's about it.
Excellent location with pleasant staff. Parking is on street at an approximated cost of £35/24 hour period. Hotel does offer subcontracted out valet parking - but I am wairey of these companies as to insurance of your vehicle whilst in their custody.
Would have liked basic drinks making facility in room.
Position was great, staff attentive
Rooms were tiny, we were on the front & had to have the window open because the room was hot, so it was very noisy
Chic & Basic cannot be recommended enough! The location was PERFECT as were the staff and the rooms!
A tiny bit noisy in the mornings - but that's a 'nothing' really!
Location was fabulous. The staff were all incredibly helpful and generous with their recommendations. Loved hiring the bikes. Great decor. Would stay there again although would request a different room.
Our first room was very dark but we were given an alternative when we asked which was much brighter (although it had a tiny bathroom/wet room with shower over the loo). We were only there to sleep though so it wasn't a problem for us. Twin rooms are two beds pushed together but with separate duvets which might be an issue for some people.
We only stayed one night, but the bed was very comfortable, like sleeping on clouds. And comp breakfast was very nice :) Just loved the design of hotel and room.
attentive staff ease of check in access to the room location
Perfect attention, good break fast and good bedroom Quality. They even saved my lii
Super friendly and helpful staff. They made our stay thoroughly enjoyable and were very helpful with straightforward tips and advice on the city. They recommended excellent restarants and even made a reservation. I would strongly recommend this place for those looking for a excellent small hotel in a quiet part of the city.
Shower drain was plugged and flooded the bathroom. But I'm sure they fixed it quickly.
convenience, location, cleanliness, helpful staff
room (no.4) was claustrophobic - too small - small window and airless
Small rooms as you expect in Amsterdam, but loved the decor. Bathrooms, flooring, beds, the bar all of it. They have changed the name from "Chic & Basic" thankfully which was really underselling it. Also appreciated the water dispenser with fresh lemon lime and mint in and the nuts at the bar. Staff were very friendly and capable for the main part. I would definitely go back there, it seemed like the best of the boutique hotels that I saw and in a quiet but central area, right near the Jordaan which is my favourite district.
There was a mishap with our booking on arrival. We were given our room key on arrival but it was clearly occupied - it had been given to somebody else, so we had to take a another room without a canal view. The guy on reception didn't seem confident in what he was doing and also said we hadn't paid in full when I knew we had. However staff the next day apologised and sorted it all out and we did save money. My only other quibble was there was an additional steps going down to the ground floor beyond the stairs that was very difficult to see the way it was decorated. I fell and twisted my ankle on it and was then hobbling round Amsterdam sight seeing. I pointed it out, hopefully they have put some tape there now to mark the edge which should solve it.
Location was perfect, right on a canal in a quiet street with a step perfect for people watching. The room was clean, tastefully furnished and the shower room had the wow factor. Breakfast was good, staff friendly.
We booked a loft room which we thought would be at the top of the building but was in fact on the ground floor. It was a lovely family room but not a loft! Neighbours in an adjoining house were noisy until late at night and we were woken early by decorators outside our room. Unfortunately my family all woke up covered in insect bites presumably from the beds.
Perfect location, gorgeous cafe room downstairs.
Very friendly staff and a nice welcoming wine :) TY
Stairs and corridors may at first seem a bit frightening but rooms and service is perfect.
Nice decoration, it seems all the attention has been put on style, none on basic expectations from a hotel (confortable enough rooms, good sleep, safety)
This hotel is absurdely overcharging for a very bad service: - rooms much too small (not even space to store 1 big luggage next to the bed) - small room space entirely filled with uneccessary huge pillows, too big to sleep on - IMPOSSIBLE TO GET A GOOD SLEEP - rooms with NO WINDOW (even in category "superior"): dark and almost no light of day, the photos on the website are a cheat - Rooms are DANGEROUS for a kid, even if they know because you booked a baby bed (stairs in the room with no door, needles in the decoration at baby level, lamps without bulbs next to the bed...) - WIFI not working in the rooms - Choice at breakfast almost non-existent (no yogurts, no fruits, no pastries, no eggs... just a bit of plain bread, cheese and ham) This hotel is my worst disappointment ever and is absolutely not worth the high price it is charging.
