눉Nothing to complain about at all in this brief stay. That said, we were very glad for a number of reasons that the nearby tourist-attraction-as-was, Utrecht's "unique" "traditional" houseboat-brothel zone, the Zandpad, had been closed down six months earlier (for reasons of people trafficking, abuse, all the things you might expect). Had we arrived when it was still in operation, it might not have been *quite* so charming a walk along the riverside to Gerard's boat, past endless brothel-houseboats that look unsettlingly like kennels and endless queues of kerb-crawling (riverside-crawling?) cars full of the "clientele". Obviously views differ about the merits/harms/inevitability/defensibili- ty of the selling of women's bodies. But not everyone would find walking straight through the middle of a marketplace for sexual services as the ideal evening stroll back to your accommodation.
눇Gerard is a thoughtful host who makes visitors welcome. We were given a delicious and generous breakfast. The riverside location is not near the centre of town - if you're not driving, you'll need a bus journey and a walk - and the accommodation is clean, comfortable but basic. You're on a boat, not in a Hilton, of course. If you want to try something out of the ordinary, and you like the thought of waking up with waterbirds floating past the window, and you don't mind a half-hour walk along the river into the centre of town and you are not alarmed by sharing a small boat with its (courteous, charming, creative) musician-owner or by the prospect of facilities that are perfectly normal for a houseboat, then it's certainly worth trying. Something charmingly different in an identikit world.
