Hotel de MunckAchtergracht 3, 1017 WL Amsterdam (Show map) Good, Score from 202 reviews“Location is okay, at the south fringe of Amsterdam Centrum. Accessible via trams from Fredriksplein. ”
Jimmy,
Berlin
Hotel de Munck is located in a quiet street next to the Amstel River, an 8-minute walk from Waterloo Square and Rembrandt Square. The garden is full of flowers during summer. Most of the guest accommodations have a private bathroom. Rooms are also available for families. The reception and breakfast area are decorated in the style of the 60s, including an original AMI jukebox. It takes a 3 minute walk to tram stop Oosteinde, which takes you to the lively Leidse Square in a short. The Utrechtsestraat is located around the corner and has a large variety of shops and restaurants. Hotel Rooms: 16

The location was very near the tram line and there's a playground in front for little kids. Area is quiet too and the room we had (quad room) was spacious and very clean. The staff was very friendly and extremely helpful. Highly recommend this for travel with family.

The location is good. Just around the corner (10 minutes walk) from Rembrandt Plein. About the same distance to 2 Metro stations: Waterloo Plein and Plein. Almost equal distance from both. The bed. Comfortable boxspring, mmm... Friendly staff. The place is tiny; talk about miniature! I've never been in such small/cramped spaces, ever. Granted I'm 6 feet 2 inches tall, but I don't think I need to always watch out for my head whenever I'm indoors. The stairs are so narrow only one person could fit in at a time. The stairs are also VERY steep. about 80 degrees incline I think. Going up the last 2 floors is a nightmare as you'd have to bend over almost double to get up there... Even though wi-fi is available and free, it's not accessible from the top floor :(

The staff was pleasant and helpful. Apparently the owners (as mentioned in earlier reviews here and on other sites) either have sold the business, gone on a long vacation, or hired others to run the place. No longer is there a potentially crotchety, Elvis-obsessed Dutchman at the helm, but instead what seems to be a Southeast Asian or East Asian (Korean? Thai?) family. I mostly dealt with one young man who spoke good English and was responsive to my requests: especially, to change rooms after our first night. Unfortunately, most of the rooms I either slept in or saw at Hotel de Munck are only borderline acceptable. Considering that I paid 260 euros for three nights in a double, this was not a good deal. The first night we arrived late and were led to a room next door, which was about half below grade, and faced directly to the sidewalk & street. Not only did this mean a complete lack of privacy, but it gave a claustrophobic feeling. This room was fairly small, lacked any space for hanging clothes, and parts of it were quite dirty (the carpet, the inside of some of the cabinets). It did not seem as if it had been fully converted to a hotel room. The decor was very odd, even disturbing: large poster of a baby harp seal facing the bed, with an appeal against their slaughter. I am quite sympathetic to this cause and so found it all the more uncomfortable to go to sleep facing this poster... The second room, up the extremely narrow, steep, and slippery (carpeted and very worn) stairs to the fourth floor or so, was #7, and I recommend against it, mostly just because it is tiny. However it has a very pleasant view out the back window over neighboring gardens, and would have been acceptable had it not been freshly repainted with very toxic smelling paint. Also the bathroom shower curtain was very moldy at the bottom & needed immediate replacement. When I came in one afternoon, the room next door (#6, presumably a single without bath) was getting a new carpet in. This was disruptive, but I suppose also promising. However, the room looked quite microscopic: for more than $40 or $50 us I would consider it a dead rip-off (even with the hotel's genuinely very good location). Also, heating was decent, but I do not remember seeing any air-con in the rooms. TVs (not important to me...) were microscopic.

Good place for a great price, normal breakfast, clean room The only thing I dislike - very narrow and steep stairs, it was a real challenge to bring all my luggage to the 4th floor:)

Hotel Munck is in a good spot within Amsterdam. The rooms are a good size and it's nice and peaceful in the room. They will also hold your reservation if you show up at around midnight like I did :) ....but don't quote me on that because they were not too busy that night. Thanks for holding my reservation hotel de munck!!!!

Room was clean, staff were friendly and location is ok for travelling with tram. Buffet breakfast was ok. The toilet was really old and there was not any sink. So when you have shower everywhere become wet:( The washbasin was outside of the batroom and this is not nice if your are staying with your friend. The air dryer war really poor and old.

Finally we understand why people complained about the stairs:-)) They are a little narrow , but I noticed that is very normal in Amsterdam. The room was big enough for 4 beds, clean, with private bathroom, very friendly staff. The location was great to meet the museums is to get to Rembrantsplein. The Reguliersgracht is great for shopping and full of bars and restaurants. We really had a great time !!!!

Good personal, Fresh bread and food at the breakfast, fast answering on the questions of cleints. If you want just walk around at Amsterdam this hotel is best choice. Price a little bit high for this kind of Hotel, but this is Amsterdam, all hotels is expensive.

The room was very comfortable and very clean. We had a family suite for 7, sharing 1 toilet / 2 showers, travelling as 2 adults with 'children' aged between 20 and 12. It was ideal and we all had a very comfortable night's sleep with an adequate breakfast. It is a little way out of the centre of Amsterdam but close enough to local restaurants (we found a lovely mexican just around the corner) - easily accessible from central Amsterdam by tram 4. From the hotel it is an easy walk to the Museum district housing, amongst other things, Van Gough Museum. We couldn't fault the hotel - they even found us a pack of cards to play with at 10 o'clock at night. just be careful when booking - they don't take payment, they just take your card details as guarantee incase you cancel. Therefore you may think you've paid but you haven't and you still need to pay on arrival. Any card other than a Maestro incurs a 3% charge.

Hotel is basic but provided a good base for visiting all we wanted to see and do in Amsterdam. Close to tram routes and street with selection of varied restaurants. Six ladies - stayed in the 2 bedroom family apartment. We were worried that one loo would not be enough but it worked out ok. Two showers and 4 washbasins was a big help. Very nice young couple running hotel were helpful. Was better than expected for a very reasonable price (compared to others). As other reviews have commented the breakfast was simple but adequate. All in all we had a great time. Nothing to do with Hotel Munck..... But all travellers should be especially careful in places such as Central Station. One of the ladies had her purse stolen by a pickpocket almost as soon as we arrived. Was sooooooo annoying.

The things I mosts liked were the location and the staff. The young couple who run the hotel were most accommodating and pleasant. They did carry up my larger bags to the 3rd floor room. They also were kind enough to allow me to leave my bags in the hotel after I had checked out, (because I had a late flight) and this gave me the chance to do more shopping withoug lugging the bags around. There are also nice views of the canal etc from the rooms on that side of the building. Another nice gesture was the large number of post cards of Amsterdam that were available for free to the hotel guests. The hotel stairs were a shock at first because they are more like ladders (but I understand this is the norm for budget hotels in Amsterdam). It is definitely not for people afraid of heights or with dodgy legs. The windows could do with some insect/fly screens because the mosquitoes came into the room whenever the windows were open.

It was perfectly suited for 7 guys needing 7 beds. Fairly centrally located. It was a bit of a hike to get to the red light district but we got to see a Tom of the city because of it. People were very nice, the breakfast was not overly fancy but we prefered going out anyway. Very nice little courtyard out back. Rooms were cleaned and beds made each day. All in all we were all very happy with our stay. I think we were a bit loud for the other guests.
