My stay at this formerly premier hotel took an ominous turn for the worse when I checked in. One of the reception staff rudely informed me that I would have to pay an extra fee for checking in before 2 PM. I informed her that I've been a guest of the hotel for 15 years, and have never paid a fee for an early check-in. I also mentioned that trans-Atlantic flights are scheduled to arrive early in the morning, and so assessing these guests an early check-in fee was unfair. She, however, wouldn't listen. Only after calling upon the manager was I able to get the fee waived.
Secondly, the room they assigned me was in poor condition: it looked as though it hadn't been renovated for a few decades. It was nominally a "no-smoking" room, and yet the furniture and curtains reeked of stale smoke.
One of the windows was broken and wouldn't close properly. The upshot of this was that I slept poorly owing to the constant irritation of mosquitos in the room.
Lastly, when checking out, I was charged for breakfast on two consecutive days. At 40 euros, this is not an insignificant cost, as well as an incorrect one seeing as how I don't eat breakfast.
Suffice it to say that I won't be returning to the Bilderberg in the future.
As far as location is concerned, you can't beat the scenic surroundings of this hotel in downtown Rotterdam.
