Van der Valk Hotel Leiden  

Terrible showers; no pressure like a 60's London Hotel! My new room smelled of carpet glue which was horrible and irritating for my sinuses resulting in a lasting headache!

The rooms have been renovated recently and they are very nice. Room's size is big.

Fortunate to get a newly renovated room on top floor, large room ,small sunny balcony,. Every thing was clean and fresh

A very friendly hotel with good staff. food was excellent. Good location if you liked cycling and an excellent lake near by to walk around.good car parking. Although the hotel was undergoing renovation this did not cause a problem, good sized bathrooms with both bath and seperate shower. Will come back and stay again and explore more of the surrounding countryside

A little to far out of the centre of Leiden.But having said that that once you have mastered the road system, well placed for trips to the coast and Keukenhof.

the terrace on the river is very pleasant, the room was comfortable and new. Nice to have the jacuzzi as well!

the location is not so convenient if you are not by car... bus stop is just in front but bus rides to Leiden centre are not very frequent especially on weekends.

We've got free upgrade from Junior suite to Royal Suite, despite of repair undertaken one floor lower there was silence all day long, meals at the restaurant was delicious and relatively unexpensive. Personnel was helpfull and polite. Hotel has free parking, the thing you cannot underestimate in the Netherlands. Hotel has also two or three berths so as far as I could understand it's possible to come by motor boat. Sunsets are very scenic at the locality, we've got a few wonderfull photos of it.

Hotel is situated at outskirts of Leiden and it takes about 40 minutes to reach to the center of town by foot. There is a possibility to get there by bus but in mornings and evenings you'll have to wair for it quite a time. Breakfast costs 12,5 euro per person and it definitely doesn't worth it: the assortment is very poor though the quality is adequate. We tried it once and then prefered to have breakfast in town.

Good location, short bus journey to the town centre. Sited on a canal;lovely to sit over breakfast in the sunshine and watch the boats go by. Hired bikes from the hotel-very convenient. Large room with very comfortable beds. The staff were extremely accommodating and friendly. Excellent breakfasts.

Room got hot after a lucky spell of good weather and the nearby road was noisy so had to close it at night-too stuffy and hot.

Parking was good, easy to find, polite friendly staff Room was cleaned well and refreshed both mornings.

Room was alitttle dark and carpets were badly stained (in two area)which was slightly off putting.

Vary friendly and helpful, perfect English speaking staff, also waiters in the restaurant. Nice, clean rooms. Stylish interiors, nice merge of classic and modern style. Delicious dishes in the restaurant, both breakfast and dinners a la carte. The hotel is quiet and peaceful, perfect to relax. The bus stop is just in front of the building and the hotel has its own parking, what is a huge plus (it's very difficult to find a parking spot in Leiden).

It's a bit far from the city center (10min by bus). The room was very clean, but the hydro massage smelled terribly after turning on (I believe it's because of not being used, not poor cleaning).

We were surprised with the jacuzzi in our bath! It was really a surprise! Also the interconnecting doors. We stayed with friends so its not a hassle if we go to their room.

We hear the people talking outside the room. Aside from that, we liked everything.

The food was very good quality in the resturaunt and a reasonable price.

The room was promised with a bolcony, however on arrival the ''balocony'' was a small apce outside the window, with no door accsess (room 414). The room was downsatirs so felt very dark with not much light coming in. The decor was dated and plain.

Tea and coffee from machine at breakfast. Breakfast is relatively dear though offering plenty of choice.

Hotel very business meeting/conference orientated. We were "upgraded"!!? To a 3 roomed appartment as our serviced room had been probably allocated to a business customer. This was no upgrade but probably for the convenience of the hotel management. The appartment was not serviced during our two night stay, There was a shortage of toilet paper. We could not use the microwave oven as it lacked a turntable. There were 3 flights of stairs to the appartment. Bottom flight lack handrail and was very dangerous, especially when carrying heavy luggage. Supposidly hot breakfast buffet was cold. On leaving we mentioned the spurious upgrade this was acknowledged as being untrue and we were offered a deductiion of one day's breakfast. Not really good enough for Van Der Valk's flagship hotel.

It is a location very useful for visiting Leiden and drive quiclkly to Amsterdam. Wonderful breakfast on the canal.

What I found deceiving was the absence of air conditionining in the room. We were there on two hot days and we would have appreciate it very much.

Staying at the hotel is something of a nostalgia trip, following a period of work in Leiden in 2000. I also stayed at the hotel in 2006. Over the period the hotel has been substantially refurbished with attractive modern decor.

We live abroad. Easy access to Schiphol prior to departure.

Bathroom: hot / cold water mix in douche and bath extreme difficult to balance on comfortable temperature. It is dangerous to skin burning.

The advertised bus stop, which is right in front of the hotel, is not from Conexxion, so it costs approximately 7,50 euro to take it to Leiden Centraal station. Nearest Conexxion bus stop is still close by; should be advertised more.

Easy tio get to. Nice surroundings. Clean hotel and friendly atmosphere. Bus to Leiden is very close. Within 10 mins you can get to a shopping area near Delft. Leiden is very buzzing and lively. Trains to Amsterdam are very good, but pricy. May do well to book in advance. If you want to take a bus use the National bus located about 5 min walk from the hotel. I like the lake view.

Breakfast is not included and pricy otherwise. Room was hot in the summer. No air conditioning.

The friendly service in every aspect from reception to kitchen and cleaning staff. Comfortable, on the water's edge next to a typical Dutch draw bridge, on a bus route, near the university, the town and a lake with recreation facilities around it. Despite it being on a crossroads, a bus route and a water freight route, we never heard any noise from traffic as the hotel is tripple glazed throughout.

The only snag was that room service finished earlier on Sunday. We arrived late (having missed a bus) and hungry and when my daughter (who is breastfeeding and needed a snack) rang for room service at 23.05 it was not available, whereas it said 23.30 on the card in our room. My son-in-law went to the nearest petrol station but that was closed too. We didn't see anywhere in the hotel or nearby where we could even have got something out of a slot machine. It was not exactly the hotel's fault that we travelled light and without extra food so we have learned from it to bring some extras in future - just in case.
