Det Hanseatiske Hotel  

The location and the quaintness of the old buildings joined together to form a hotel. The bathroom was modern and clean however there was no place to put cosmetics or shaving items while using the sink and mirror. A shelf would help. In the room there was no stool or shelf on which to put our single suitcase in order to open it. I prefer not to put the dirty suitcase on the bed and it is too difficult to lean over on the floor. Our room required us to carry our suitcase up two flights of stairs because the elevator only serviced part of the building. The staff did not offer to help with the luggage nor did they show us up to our room even though it was difficult to find in the winding hallways and bridges connecting buildings. We were left to wander on our own lugging our suitcase.

There was a young blonde woman who was the sole person on duty when we checked in during the early evening, around 7pm. She was not friendly at all and couldn't even find our reservation even though I presented her with the reservation number and my name. She grudgingly found it and handed us our card keys with very hurried directions to our room. In such a quirky and rambling hotel, this was inadequate. She also told us the wrong place to go for breakfast. When we asked a question about Bergen, she flatly answered she didn't know. This hotel badly needs a training program for front desk employees. The hotel was also undergoing extensive renovations and we were not informed about this ahead of time. These building works were so extensive that electrical wires were hanging down in the halls and dangerous machinery were constantly in use in public areas. We had to step over things and ask workmen to excuse us as we walked from our room to the front door. It was not a surprise that dust covered everything and we tried to avoid touching anything in our comings and goings. Finally, on our last morning we went down to breakfast at 7am because our plane was leaving in the morning. We neglected to note that on Saturday, breakfast began at 8am. When my husband asked if he were a bit early, the server snapped, ' Yes, an hour early! It says in the book that breakfast starts at 8 on Saturday.' Needless to say, this was our last interaction with the hotel and it wasn't a pleasant one. It costs a hotel nothing to greet guests, ask if any assistance can be offered, and to be pleasant when questions are asked. All of these things were notably missing. We met a nice Irish couple on our fjord journey and warned them not to stay at this hotel. A shame.

The hotel was renovating, which was not mentioned on your site! The first room was nice, but in the eve thing it smelled like a kitchen. Fortunately the staff was friendly enough to give us another room.

Great staff, and the location was excellent. Good breakfast and when they finish remodeling it will be very nice! Our room was very nice and with nice windows that open!

The people work there extremly helpful and so kind.

I would really recommend Det Hanseatiske Hotel for all travellers visiting Bergen. Clean, friendly, excellent beds and nice breakfast! Good value for money! ++

I cannot fault this hotel. We arrived to find that we had been upgraded to a better room as there were some vacancies. Our room was perfect. The staff could not have been more helpful and the breakfast was great. We shall certainly stay here again if we are in Bergen. The building is part of the Bryggen unesco World Heritage Site and a great deal of building work is being undertaken at present so it will be even better when finished.

A unique atmosphere, very conveniently located and with welcoming staff.

It would be difficult to fault this hotel. From the welcome to checking out the hotel staff could not have been more helpful. The room was beautifully decorated and the bed the most comfortable I have experienced in any hotel. The bathroom was large and modern with a seven foot free standing bath. Hard to beat. Highly recommended and value for money.

Fabulous the way that they have created this luxurious hotel from a historical building. We stayed in the junior suite, really enjoyed the layout and furnishings. Such a great diffreence to other hotels in the price range, still got the luxury, but the way they have converted gives such a unique feel to the place. Also just down the orad from the unesco listed wharf buildings - feels like an extension of it, get a real sense of what it must have been like a few hundred years ago. Definitely recommend - one of our favourite hotels in years!
