We experienced that the quality of the rooms were quite different. I think the hotel's website is more accurate actually. There they call the rooms Single, Double, Tripple etc. On booking.com it was sold as a deluxe double room with balcony, but in fact only one of the rooms was deluxe and had a balcony. The second one was tiny, a bit dark, not as nicely decorated and on the first floor, so no balcony. I wrote to booking.com twice about it because we were quite disappointed but we never hear back!
The location was amazing, a quiet oasis in the outskirts of the town and away from the main tourist waterholes. Still an easy 2km bike ride to get to the center of town and the bars and restaurants. The hotel has its own elephant and baby which was an added bonus. If you are interested in an elephant safari, ask for the private one arranged by the hotel. You avoid the big safari groups and you can ride the mama elephant while the baby crashes through the bush behind you. Watching his antics were the best part of the safari! Food is good at the hotel and the ambiance is amazing there, but we did eat out one night at KCs, highly recommended.
Should stay longer !
People here are more than friendly, they make me feel so warm, comfortable and secure. They have two menus there, one is for food and drinks, another one is for programs you can do in Chitwan, never be bored! And the rest area, soooo cozy! Be lazy and drink beers with elephant!
The mattresses were exceptionally hard.
Location. The involvement with the local community. The helpfulness of the staff.
Just be prepared for a few pauses in your internet service during "voltage shedding". They have backup generators for essentials of course. Meal orders can take a while with a big group. You can always order ahead. This is a minor disruption in my opinion.
Staff commitment to the community and customer care. Anything we wanted to do with the children was arranged without fuss and almost immediately. Anything with elephants: bathing in the river, making their favourite food, rides through the jungle, even painting elephants!
Chanchal and the other elephants are still on the chain. I would love to see Sapana leading the chain-free trend in Chitwan and having all their elephants in corrals.
When I knew that Sapana had a baby elephant, I didn't think twice to book my visit there. If you are an elephant lover, this is a place for you. I also appreciate a lot that the mom elephant and the baby had a chain-free corral for themselves and that they did maximum two trips a day to the jungle (and not eight like other elephants in Chitwan).
Don't agree with privately owned elephants. They have 3 :(
Trips were very good gardens clean and we'll maintained and room was nice with a balcony
Only problem was a rowdy tour group partying at the fire pit until 2 one night and disturbing our sleep one of our four nights there. The manager was very responsive and offered to move our room and gave the two of us a bicycle tour as compensation for the disturbance. He said this was an unusual event there.
Sampana is far enough from the center of town to be private and relaxed, but walking distance to shopping, restaurants and activity in town. The riverside setting is lovely and peaceful and the grounds beautiful. Loved the baby elephant living on the property with mom and their getting bathed in the river each morning. Very sweet and entertaining
Sapana village lodge is a beautiful place to stay, very nice rooms, excellent places to relax and to eat, very friendly staff and nice surroundings. I really recommend staying here.

rustic style bar restaurant river view elephants in property
the lovely people, the owner was inspiring, the bed, the hygiene, the beautiful surroundings. it was a dream!
One major point : money. 1. The restaurant is about 3 times more expensive than normal in Nepal, and the village is a bit far to go to other restaurants in the evening. 2. As in many places, the food prices don't include 10% service charges + 13% VAT. Well that's ok, even if useless. 3. Activity prices don't include 13% VAT, which would be OK if they told us when we asked for the total price of our activities rather than discovering it at the end when we paid. 4. At the end of the trip, if you want to pay by credit card, they will also add 3,5% on the global amount for "bank taxes" : thus you will pay their bank taxes, plus yours, plus the bank taxes on their bank taxes... First time I see that in my life. It's really sad to end up the beautiful stay like that...!
Everything : the activities proposed by the hotel and in particular the quality of the guides chosen. Abi, our guide made everything possible for us to spot rhinos! The fact that they organize activities whenever you prefer without trying to absolutely integrate you to an existing group : we have often been alone with our guide. The food is great. Rooms are pleasant and clean. The staff is adorable and friendly. The garden is beautiful and relaxing.
