It's a novelty to stay in a historic palace and there's great wood work of art in the reception area. Great buffet breakfast. Staff are friendly and willing to help. It has a nice garden and a cafe in the garden.
Bad wifi connection in the room, stain marks in the bath tub from iron in the water.
Very helpful staff, clean rooms and good food. You get what you pay for.
Hotel staff was very down to earth and very much helpful and morning breakfast got lots of varity which is really good
Washroom are too small
The first thing you'll probably notice is the staff. The most helpful people Ive ever met. They were as genuine as can be. They literally guided and planned our entire trip. The location of the hotel is excellent. Walking distance from Thamel. The breaakfast was lavish and the entire built up area was absolutely perfect. A true heritage hotel !
The only downer was the wifi, which was really weak and kept disconnecting. Had to use the business room to check my email and bookings.
The room was spacious and comes with nice deco. Breakfast was good and the F&B staff's was very friendly and polite. Exterior of hotel was cool and nice for chill out.
The front office staff need learn smile and be more polite when facing their guest. Totally disappointed upon check in and the room directory need to updated as there is some facilities not available anymore.
Beautiful hotel with great setting. It was a palace before, its converted into a hotel. So u would expect it to be a beautiful hotel. and it wont disappoint u at all. the hotel building, interior and its décor is beautiful. v paid $100 for one night and it was worth the money all the way. Breakfast was very good and it started early morning 6:30. They gave us a very warm welcome.at first they greeted us with a small glass of juice. and than after v checked in our room there were chocolates to greet us. This is something v found amazing. if u don't to roam around in dirty city of Kathmandu and juss want to stay in the hotel. Than this is the perfect, beautiful hotel just the rite one for u and ur family. they have a big garden with swimming pool. and like all sub continents hotel their service is excellent.
the bed comfort was very poor. I couldn't sleep well the entire. we only stayed one nite so I didn't complained.
This is a beautifully decorated Hotel in the heart of Kathmandu. The breakfast buffet has a huge selection of delicious food.
I liked every part of my stay at the Hotel Shankar.
Fast Wi-Fi, Historical Building
Spa & Travel Agent bit costly
Location to Thamel, food, room
Reception staff, bellboys, restaurant and bar staff were above excellence. Room was spacious and comfortable. Food choices excellent. Travel desk service fantastic!
The cashier good have been a more pleasant person. She was very transactional and had no warmth. Bathroom needs upgrading. Pickup and drop off service needs upgrading. Pls don't assume that travelers will accept your local taxi as a service. I for one am willing to pay for comfort.
The staff were all just so welcoming, particularly Mr. Ramesh & Mr Bejoy the front desk managers, who we met on our last visit 15 years ago. And the wonderful barman, Borack. The glorious garden is such a tranquil wee haven from the hustle & bustle of congested Kathmandu. Food wise - there was a good selection on offer. And there was a nice bar with a good selection of beverages on offer. It's a popular hotel for wedding parties, but you would never notice any adverse noise from the parties. The rooms with a nice sitting room were clean & comfortable.
The hotel is a bit tired & could do with a make over, but then that does reflect in the price.
An oasis of quiet and calm in a very hectic city! The staff were extremely helpful and friendly, the restaurant was great and the breakfast was fantastic!
Staff are helpful and polite and go out of their way to accommodate your needs. The buffet breakfast is good as is the restaurant for dinner. Some rooms are really good: clean, airy, with working TVs and air conditioning. Other rooms are not as good and this can be the difference between a great experience (my second 4 nights) and a poor experience (my first 4 nights).
I arrived 4 days before my sister and parents. As a single I was given a double room that was dark, stuffy, damp smelling, noisy, with aircon that would not work continuously and TV reception that was so poor I could not watch the English language channels. I asked for it to be fixed and was told it was an external problem. Once I was in the twin room with my sister everything worked and reception on the TV was fine. Suspicious?
We booked this hotel after doing Annapurna circuit and wanting little bit of luxury after the trekk. Great location. We could walk to Tamel in the evening. Beautiful building full of character with some amazing wood carved objects including decorative windows. Great breakfast buffet and we had very nice evening meal. Staff were really professional and helpful all through the hotel. Would definitely recommend it and will definitely be back to this beautiful hotel and an amazing country
Only small comment that we were little rushed through the dinner as our waiter was finishing his shift at 10pm and he was really open about it. And on the last morning our wake up call never came but this can happen anywhere.
The staff were very friendly, helpful and professional.
Area nearby is not easy to walk around due to rough roadworks.
We stayed at the Shanker on 3 overnight occasion s during 3 weeks while trekking to base camp The 1st 2 were thru the trekking company and the last privately .The hotel is lovely and quiet but handy to Thamel for shopping .The staff were efficient apart from the house maintenance man whose idea of solving a noisy hot water pipe was to turn off the hot water meaning no hot shower ! We eventually shifted rooms and enjoyed the rest of our stay
We loved the grounds and beautiful pool. Breakfast was delicious. The rooms are older but are comfortable and very clean and the bathroom was enormous and modern. Our room was very quiet. Staff were friendly and helpful.
The very small window.
service and lovely place to stay, nice pool, perfect location.
We liked the location, it was near to the centre of town, the pool was lovely and big and the garden was great to relax in. The breakfast was excellent a mix of Nepalese and western food.
The hotel was a bit tired round the egdes, its crying out to be refurbished soon
swimming pool garden quiet, far from Thamel activity wifi access everywhere electric power at any time
equipments/decoration a little bit old (except the swimming pool)
The staff were so helpful and sweet, the room was large and and they found me a soft mattress, something i was very very grateful for, although the orignla mattress was ok too. there are a few shops in the hotel v reasonable prices, similar to Durbar Sq and that made life easy for last minute gifts. The hotel is very generous with large bottles of water in the rooms every day, something I did not find in 5 star hotels in Dehli or Kathmandu, this encouraged us to drink plenty of the fab himalayan water .
They try to run this on a very affordable and reasonable budget and that must give opportunity to some people to stay in grand building however th plumbing needs attention as the water is a funny colour, this will not of course bother trekkers who are happy to cope. Great swimming pool area with v nice poolside bar/cafe but hardly any sunshades so most of the day hard to lay by pool,(unless happy to burn) altho can sit in chairs around by the cafe
Wifi network and speed were extremely good. The hotel building itself was breathtaking. This old palace with its excellent decorative features were a bonus for me. The breakfast buffet was outstanding as it provided a lot of variety. I also appreciated the welcome drink, chocolate, and fruits. The rooms were spacious, comfortable, and elegant. Definitely recommended.
a little oasis in the city of Kathmandu, sitting in there lovely garden by the swimming pool its hard to imagine you are in a very busy city, five minutes by taxi from Greenline bus station. Staff very attentive, we only stayed one night but have 3 more booked here on our return to Kathmandu in 3 weeks
nothing to dislike.
We stayed here before and after a trek. Our first room was a suite with the teeny windows some people mention, but it was huge and comfortable and just a bit quirky. When we returned, we asked for a room with larger windows and took a std double instead of a suite. They gave us free dinner and offered airport transportation since we downgraded our room. We were happy with both rooms, with all staff, and with the food. We used their bus. center computer for free. The grounds are peaceful. People were using the pool which looked nice, too.
Beautiful building and garden, nice and spacious rooms. Very quiet place and still a central location. The staff was very helpful and friendly.
