The eco-friendly Kantipur Temple House offers a quiet oasis amidst Kathmandu’s historic treasures. It features a rooftop garden overlooking the ancient Swayambhunath Temple.

The staff were all just so welcoming, particularly Mr. Ramesh & Mr Bejoy the front desk managers, who we met on our last visit 15 years ago. And the wonderful barman, Borack. The glorious garden is such a tranquil wee haven from the hustle & bustle of congested Kathmandu. Food wise - there was a good selection on offer. And there was a nice bar with a good selection of beverages on offer. It's a popular hotel for wedding parties, but you would never notice any adverse noise from the parties. The rooms with a nice sitting room were clean & comfortable.
The hotel is a bit tired & could do with a make over, but then that does reflect in the price.
An oasis of quiet and calm in a very hectic city! The staff were extremely helpful and friendly, the restaurant was great and the breakfast was fantastic!
Staff are helpful and polite and go out of their way to accommodate your needs. The buffet breakfast is good as is the restaurant for dinner. Some rooms are really good: clean, airy, with working TVs and air conditioning. Other rooms are not as good and this can be the difference between a great experience (my second 4 nights) and a poor experience (my first 4 nights).
I arrived 4 days before my sister and parents. As a single I was given a double room that was dark, stuffy, damp smelling, noisy, with aircon that would not work continuously and TV reception that was so poor I could not watch the English language channels. I asked for it to be fixed and was told it was an external problem. Once I was in the twin room with my sister everything worked and reception on the TV was fine. Suspicious?
We booked this hotel after doing Annapurna circuit and wanting little bit of luxury after the trekk. Great location. We could walk to Tamel in the evening. Beautiful building full of character with some amazing wood carved objects including decorative windows. Great breakfast buffet and we had very nice evening meal. Staff were really professional and helpful all through the hotel. Would definitely recommend it and will definitely be back to this beautiful hotel and an amazing country
Only small comment that we were little rushed through the dinner as our waiter was finishing his shift at 10pm and he was really open about it. And on the last morning our wake up call never came but this can happen anywhere.
The staff were very friendly, helpful and professional.
Area nearby is not easy to walk around due to rough roadworks.
We stayed at the Shanker on 3 overnight occasion s during 3 weeks while trekking to base camp The 1st 2 were thru the trekking company and the last privately .The hotel is lovely and quiet but handy to Thamel for shopping .The staff were efficient apart from the house maintenance man whose idea of solving a noisy hot water pipe was to turn off the hot water meaning no hot shower ! We eventually shifted rooms and enjoyed the rest of our stay
We loved the grounds and beautiful pool. Breakfast was delicious. The rooms are older but are comfortable and very clean and the bathroom was enormous and modern. Our room was very quiet. Staff were friendly and helpful.
The very small window.
service and lovely place to stay, nice pool, perfect location.
We liked the location, it was near to the centre of town, the pool was lovely and big and the garden was great to relax in. The breakfast was excellent a mix of Nepalese and western food.
The hotel was a bit tired round the egdes, its crying out to be refurbished soon
swimming pool garden quiet, far from Thamel activity wifi access everywhere electric power at any time
equipments/decoration a little bit old (except the swimming pool)
The staff were so helpful and sweet, the room was large and and they found me a soft mattress, something i was very very grateful for, although the orignla mattress was ok too. there are a few shops in the hotel v reasonable prices, similar to Durbar Sq and that made life easy for last minute gifts. The hotel is very generous with large bottles of water in the rooms every day, something I did not find in 5 star hotels in Dehli or Kathmandu, this encouraged us to drink plenty of the fab himalayan water .
They try to run this on a very affordable and reasonable budget and that must give opportunity to some people to stay in grand building however th plumbing needs attention as the water is a funny colour, this will not of course bother trekkers who are happy to cope. Great swimming pool area with v nice poolside bar/cafe but hardly any sunshades so most of the day hard to lay by pool,(unless happy to burn) altho can sit in chairs around by the cafe
Wifi network and speed were extremely good. The hotel building itself was breathtaking. This old palace with its excellent decorative features were a bonus for me. The breakfast buffet was outstanding as it provided a lot of variety. I also appreciated the welcome drink, chocolate, and fruits. The rooms were spacious, comfortable, and elegant. Definitely recommended.
a little oasis in the city of Kathmandu, sitting in there lovely garden by the swimming pool its hard to imagine you are in a very busy city, five minutes by taxi from Greenline bus station. Staff very attentive, we only stayed one night but have 3 more booked here on our return to Kathmandu in 3 weeks
nothing to dislike.
We stayed here before and after a trek. Our first room was a suite with the teeny windows some people mention, but it was huge and comfortable and just a bit quirky. When we returned, we asked for a room with larger windows and took a std double instead of a suite. They gave us free dinner and offered airport transportation since we downgraded our room. We were happy with both rooms, with all staff, and with the food. We used their bus. center computer for free. The grounds are peaceful. People were using the pool which looked nice, too.
Beautiful building and garden, nice and spacious rooms. Very quiet place and still a central location. The staff was very helpful and friendly.
I chose to stay at Shanker again after I went back to Kathmandu. It's an impressive hotel. especially the buffet!
- staff - cleanliness - ambience of the hotel - outside garden
-- bed size (too narrow)
Swimming pool and bar are pleasant, staff is helpful, including the travel desk.
The restaurant in the basement lacks some atmosphere, but the food is nice.
Friendly staff Spacious rooms Relaxing, away from hustle & bustle
Some noise at times
THE QUICK RESPONSE OF THE HOTEL STAFF
Taxi services from hotel were expensive then the rates outside
Staff are so friendly and helpful. Got certain valuable info from the reception desk. Good location, quite and only 10 minutes walk to Thamel. Breakfast buffet is fantastic!
It will be better if the room size could be larger.
Staff friendliness and helpfulness. Wonderful pool and deck and grassy area surrounding. AC and wifi were good, included breakfast buffet was good as well.
Katmandu. Crowded, noisy, dirty. Will never come back.
