Chateau Tongariro Hotel  

The location and ambience of the hotel and its surrounds. Very good and well trained staff. A good menue and standard of meals.

All good but we found the building to be very hot, even with our room's radiator off and windows opened.

everything, the last time we stayed there was over thirty years ago and the experience was the same.

Our stay for 3 nights in April was very enjoyable, excellent room, attentive and friendly staff, great food from a variety of sources. A variety of walks to suit all age groups, and abilities. A total package that we would recommend to others seeking a relaxing break at a time of the year to suit your preferred pursuits.

I enjoyed the access to the mountain environment and the comfort of the accomodation. The room was very tastefully decorated and the lounge very enjoyable and well appointed.

Entry at the front door was difficult for loading and unloading the car. A casual cafe for lighter meals would be appreciated

We loved the lovely tiled bathroom and large bed. Very enjoyable meal and super piano playing after dinner.

I feel that if soup was served in high round bowls it would stay hot instead of luke warm.

Loved the ambience and the food was amazing. The staff Mick and Oleg were fantastic and extremely friendly and helpful.The decor lent itself to dressing up,cocktails and a special night out. The mountain provided outdoor activity and spectacular views. A must see for any trip to the north island.

This hotel could be confident to present itself with more luxurious touches by upgrading the toiletries.

the whole style, décor, ambiance. Magnificent setting; surrounded by amazing nature and scenic walks. Superb dining - chef does an outstanding job; menu is diverse and imaginative. Extra attractive, helpful features like clothes drying room for guests, a small theatre (seats 20?) with evening movies - charming!. All the staff were great. We're delighted that we chose to stay there!

The hotel was lovely in all ways.. Our room in the new wing was very quiet and comfortable.

The food options. Very expensive, even the cafe. Very meat/dairy heavy--- a thick hamburger with cheese, bacon and a fried egg. You have a cardiac arrest right there! Could use more fresh vegetables. Also, the cafe feels oppressive, being windowless and dark. Caveman with a haunch of meat. Also, some more sophisticated videos in the theatre.

Public spaces impressive.

Breakfast substandard (poor quality coffee inexcusable in this day and age, stale bread ... !!). Room dusty, broken soap shelf, broken drain in bathroom floor, soft loose floor boards in new wing room, musty smell in room. Check in was unfortunate, not too sure we actually checked in under our name--tho the bill at check out was correct At check in / check out it took three goes to get my name correct. This heritage property has such potential but it is let down by it's breakfast, house keeping and front of house standards.

Noisy cleaners early in the morning! Not sound proof between bathrooms; a few noisy children in the lounge at times - but hey - obviously it attracts families and not just couples :) It would have been nice to have had a spa or massage service available? Pool area is depressing!

Ambience, the isolation the majesty of the surroundings. Staff were wonderful, very helpful. Lounge, area cosy. Staff very attentive.

The old rooms, outdated need more modern bathrooms. No heated spa. Massage facilities were not set up well, stuffy room, not organised. Room service was good well presented, soup was cold no flavour, dreadful. Should not pay $5 charge each time for room service, a rip off. Need sheltered parking especially in cold months. Spa room difficult to open door. Gym room too small, outdated need better equipment.

1- The food. Dinner in the Dining room was of very high stanard. Breakfast was just ok. 2-The main lounge - probably the best in New Zealand 3- The location

The Grand Old Lady is way overdue for revamp. This magnificent hotel looks old and very tired. The bedding appeared to filled with kapok - heavy but not all that warm.Suggest new down filled duvets.

AMAZING!!! We drove all the way from Rotorua watching and INCREDIBLE sunset when we arrived. Situated along a quieter part of the volcano, the hotel is a sight to behold, constructed beautifully like a landscaped garden. The room was beautiful,the dinner was simply amazing... What a PLEASANT surprise!

We should stay longer.... at least 3 days to walk up to volcano...

Thought the decor in the bedrooms/ bathrooms was new and at the level to be expected. Choices and levels of places to dine within the Chateau was great.

Was a little disappointed with the main area where the grand piano is as well as the reading room. Both show signs of being rather tired. The front entrance could also do with a spit and polish remembering that first impressions do count.
