Lovely old city with some classic old buildings and stores.
Lovely old city with some classic old buildings and stores. Nice cafes and restaurants. Easy to get around with call up public transport and cheap. Lovely Caroline Bay and penguins. Nice in the evening to see them come ashore. Good choice of dining places from Asian to Customary. Nice Indian restaurant. I ate most of my meals at the hotel which had a good selection and well presented. A games room at the hotel for those that like that sort of thing. Nice friendly staff.

Best playground for kids, even teens would enjoy it.
Best playground for kids, even teens would enjoy it. Great flying fox and a hamster wheel for silly adults.
Shops are interesting.. not plastic malls. Coffee houses everywhere.
Aorangi Park is an excellent event stadium too.

Timaru was a lovely little town , we spent most of our time at the Caroline Bay Carnival & visited other Towns in the region on day trips . We did find the lack of Restaurants & bars that were open over the New Year period a problem which made it difficult to find places to eat & drink & obviously our accommodation was not what we had expected of a Hotel stay . Other than that Timaru was a good trip as my partner had never been there before & we would definitely visit again but stay somewhere else

We didn't know what to expect of Timaru, but it surpassed our expectations, with good shops, nice streets and good restaurants to be found. Would particularly recommend the Old Bank Bar and Grill, which serves the most wonderful food. We had the roast-of-the-day there, and it was the best roast beef and vegetables we'd tasted anywhere in a restaurant! Pricing VERY reasonable, and they actually have a "seniors" menu, which is even cheaper and acknowledges that older people often don't want as big a helping as younger people. We also dined in a Thai restaurant in the middle of town, which was OK. Very nice atmosphere! There is quite a large branch of the Farmer's Dept store there, which is well stocked and has, typically for Farmer's, very pleasant, helpful staff.

Such a pretty town with lots of free things to do.
Such a pretty town with lots of free things to do.
If you are there in the right season, pop down to Caroline Bay near the port and see the little blue penguins come in at dusk,
The rose gardens by the piazza are pretty and the whole area by Caroline bay is beautiful.
I enjoyed my walks to dashing rocks and especially Tuhawaiki point Jack's lighthouse. If you are energetic I later found out you can walk or cycle there from town. Botanical gardens are also worth a visit, as is Centennial park.
I also spent a couple of hours looking at everything in Te ana Māori Rock art centre, so thought it was worth the $20 admission.
Zest was a great place for dinner or lunch - oaty caramel slice is divine!
Cappadocia Turkish kitchen served us great meals, we dined in and the service was superb!
I was also glad I made the trip to Denheath Desserts factory and purchased some fresh custard squares, they were a delicious treat and the staff delightfully friendly.
I truly enjoyed my stay in Timaru - a full 5 stars from me!

A daylight town only. Very quiet at night.
A daylight town only. Very quiet at night. Beautiful views of the Southern Alps with near views of so many green spaces. Caroline bay lovely. Main Street quiet. Conservative and calm. Did I mention quiet.
The Terrace Apartment is a Harbour-Side sea cottage, it overlooks the Port of Timaru. The apartment has extensive views to the South & North, but vision is restricted to the East because of a huge Silo.
You soon get used to the Silo, as the Harbour Views, watching ships come & go & the Tugs busily plying their trade of pushing & pulling ships into the wharfs takes over your line of sight.
The Town Centre of Timaru is 260metres walk & there are 2 pubs within that range.
The accommodation was roomier and more comfortable than expected .The location was quiet and next to a lovely coastal stroll as well as being right beside Caroline Bay. We saw dolphins in the bay which the host went out of her way to show to us. The hosts were friendly and welcoming and the breakfast was very tasty and well cooked. The orange juice was an unexpected treat and the bread for the toast freshly made.
We’d definitely recommend and return to.
The staff were great. It's handy to Caroline Bay ... walking distance. The complex was built around the 70's but is clean, well maintained, beautifulyy sunsoaked and in good condition. Some units have garaging underneath which is a bonus. Even though it is right next to the main road, our units was surprisingly very quiet. Would highly recommend this accomodation.
Great location across the street from Caroline Bay. Very friendly staff at the front desk arranged for us to have a room with a view for a two-night stay. The room was clean and spacious -- we were delighted to see a separate living room and kitchenette separated from the bedroom with a door.
Location was good, with a brief walk to the centre of Timaru. Also having a unit with a stovetop was great. When we arrived, there was a mix up in our booking and we were upgraded free of charge. Outstanding compliment to owners for doing this.
Easy to find
Easy to park
Staff was very responsive and helpful
Location was great for exploring Timaru
Comfortable Bed
Very clean personal bedroom and bathroom and shower were clean, and comfortable to use in a shared situation.
The room was tidy and had been modernised. There were no kitchen facilities, but that didn't bother us as we didn't plan to cook in the room. The Hotel was near Caroline Bay and wasn't far to drive into the city for dinner.
- atmosphere in the old building is nice
- self service check-in
- bathrooms were clean
- big clean kitchen including oatmeal breakfast and coffee/tea
- although overrated, it was one of the cheapest options in timaru
Location is fantastic being close to Caroline bay, the shops, bars and cafes. Room was clean and spacious and comfortable. Room had a balcony with a pleasant outlook.
