This trip was a birthday surprise, away from the kids for my husband. We are not affluent and I had saved enough money for the fuel from Gisborne, the hotel and a nice lunch at a winery the next day. I don't have credit cards, only a visa debit card. I normally pay for anything in advance. However, my card was loaded with $319 - I wasn't given the choice to pay cash. Then I paid $267 for the room and breakfast. Because the $319 didn't come back to me straight away, I was left with no funds to take my husband to lunch which completely spoiled the whole point of the trip. Now, 5 days later, I still don't have access to my funds. I should have been given the choice to pay in full at the time of booking or by eftpos on arrival. Most hotels have now stopped this procedure for this very reason. I suggest The Crown needs to update it's system.
Hotel location was great and room, cleanliness etc.. are all what you would expect. Expensive though I felt compared to other places I have stayed which are just as good.
