Staff behind reception desk were slightly over-stretched on occasion and unable to answer questions (this may be unavoidable due to "peak hour" when lots of people arrive from the bus or ferry). But they were able to enlist the help of other informal staff / long-term guests to show me how things worked, so was not a problem.
Hostel is on main road (State Highway 1) and next to railway crossing, so noise may disturb light sleepers, but was no problem for me.
My room was comfortable, very clean and good value for money (NZD 82 per night for an en-suite twin room).
Facilities were good and well-organised. Hot spa was pleasant after a long day's walking. Kitchen, lounge (with book exchange) and outdoor seating areas also very good.
Location is great in the centre of Picton, close to all pubs, restaurants, supermarkets etc. The Intercity bus stops right outside and the ferry terminal (& car hire office) is 5 mins walk. Reception stays open until the evening bus from Christchurch arrives, even if it is late.
