Machu Picchu was completely abandoned for nearly 400 years.
Machu Picchu was completely abandoned for nearly 400 years. There are no know written records of who built it, what it was used for or the part it played in Inca history. The guides are totally speculative. They have good stories..... but completely from their imagination. Do your homework and prepare for the visit.

It might seem almost heretical to not give MP top marks and to admit I planned too much time there, but it is really only the sanctuary that is worth the visit (for me). Had I been up to the mountain climb then another day would have been worth it. It is probably best to arrive the night before, get up early to visit in the morning, then leave after lunch.
Overall, I may have been slightly underwhelmed as it was a rubbish day, overcast and a bit drizzly so the views were less than ideal. Also even taking the bus up to the sanctuary there is still al lot of climbing and at that altitude...!
Arguably one of the best looking hotels in the area. The service was fantastic in many ways. We were met at the train station and guided to the hotel. We were able to store our luggage for the day whilst we went up Machu Picchu. And anything they could do to help they did. We had rooms 3 & 4 which had a brilliant view of the mountains around. The room was a lovely wooden feel. The breakfast was also great! It was a 3 courses including fruit, cereal & yoghurt and then eggs and bread along with a coffee.
Hotel was in a great location, easy to reach the Machu Picchu way up from there either by bus or by foot (we walked and it was great). The hotel staff met us at train station, we received packed lunch for our trip as we left early and missed breakfast. The next day we had breakfast and it was really good. View from the window was very amazing. It is not a modern hotel, but for where you are in the heart of the mountains, it's good to be humble and appreciate that such facilities are available.
Carlos the owner was incredibly helpful. He met us from the train station and told us everything we needed to know about our trip to Machu Picchu. He got up early to cook us breakfast and looked after our bags whilst we were visiting Machu Picchu itself. The beds were incredibly comfortable, the best that we have slept in during our trip to Peru, and the hotel was warm and safe and had a nice bathroom with good water pressure.
The location is convenient when you arrive by train - honestly Aguas Calientes feels like Adventureland. From the outside the hotel is nothing to look at, but our room was very nice and the bed was huge and comfortable. The only issue was that our toilet leaked slightly, but it was a very minor inconvenience. The breakfast place is right on the river and delicious. This place is an excellent value.
Great affordable option in Aguas Calientes with Wonderful breakfast and friendly staff. Walking distance to all the action but is quiet at night for a restful sleep. I reccomend staying in Aguas Calientes town for a few days, as there is plenty to do besides Macchu Pichhu, great affordable food. Its a charming jungle town and this is the best hotel to stay in.
Hotel is really close to the train station, shops and cafes.Room is quite big and clean. Bed was comfortable. Staffs were extremely helpful. They still serve us breakfast eventhough we missed the breakfast time. They help us store our luggage when we were up to Machu Picchu and delivered us the bag at a meeting point. And the hot shower is great.
Great location, close to the train station and artisanal market. Restaurants street behind it and Machu Picchu bus station on the same street just a block away. Hotel staff extremely helpful and kind during our entire stay. Best breakfast, including fresh fruits and healthy items. Nice room facing the river with very comfortable bed.
Very clean, comfortable hotel close to the hot springs and overlooking the river. The breakfast was very good and served very early if you have early tickets to Machu Picchu. Beds were very comfortable. Good value for the money. It is at the top of a pretty steep street which may be an issue for some people.
the staff was amazing and helped with arranging a doctor the the hotel within 30 min when my boyfriend was feeling bad. the breakfast was really good and the location was excellent. If coming back to Machupicchu, we would chose this hotel again. I highly recommend staying there!
The hotel is good and comfy, staff is overall helpful. The breakfast was really good with good options for cold and warm food.
Aguas Calientes is pretty small, so it's hard to get a bad location, but this one is close to the train station and the bus stop to machu picchu
Walking distance from train station and from town plaza. Also walking distance to catch bus to Machu Picchu. Beds very comfortable, and excellent shower. Buffet breakfast very good, with staff to cook eggs as you prefer.
Only an 8 room hotel. All rooms face river.
Great location. Close to the train station and the Machu Picchu bus stop … and restaurants. Modern style room, with king size bed. Buffet breakfast great way to start the day. Hotel will hold your luggage during your visits to Machu Picchu
The kind reception lady managed to check us in early as we were quite sick and tired from Inca Trail. Hotel is easy to spot. Nice balcony view. Was the only breakfast hotel buffet in my Peru trip that had BACON!
Very nice hotel. The room was big with a very nice view to the river and with a nice jacuzzi. The staff was outstanding and the breakfast very good. Next time in Machu Picchu we will be there again.
