Freddie and Jose' of Killawasi Lodge were the most gracious hosts we encountered, after arriving in Lima, for a month long adventure into Peru. We knew we'd arrived at the right place when the lodge perro bounded up to greet us as well because we so badly missed our own dog at home. said dog ended up leading us on a great hi,e to the mirador, the following day and even alerted us to a small rockslide, en route. It was the most rural and at once comfortably elegant place we experienced in our month-long tour of Peru. The dog can lead you the hot springs or you can take a taxi. The Lomo Saltado (really all the cuisine) in the lodge's "Quinoa Cafe'" was the finest of the whole journey. Room #10 has a great view and patio as do other rooms. Seriously, all you have to do is ask for what you need and your gracious and knowledgable hosts provide. Freddie even guided us on a birding hike and was very informative. Oh, we watched Giant hummingbirds in the topiary and flower gardens adjacent to the quinoa field. The neighbors host a colorful menagerie of yard fowl, burros, etc.. and don't deprive yourself of walks to the local churches and mercados to enjoy the laid-back nature of the locals. This is a fantastic jumping off point for anything you wish to see at the wondrous Colca canyon (condor pass, ruins, etc.). If you go, give the dog, Nebro, a pat and a piece of queso for me. You get back all that you put in and more at this location.
