Pleasant stay, friendly staff, good choice of decoration
Simple breakfast, little choice of bread and low quality. Small swimming pool. Far from other attractions. Small bathroom. Overpriced.
What I liked most was the people. They were warm and friendly and helpful. We were treated like family. The place is very small and charming. It's not for everyone - meals are prepared and cooked in the same room in which guests eat, and there is only one meal served each night, family style. Some may want a more impersonal experience, but we loved the personal touch. It is located way out in the country, miles from civilization, but in a great spot from which to explore the Alentejo region. We fell asleep at night listening to the sheep bells tinkling. The stars in the night sky were so bright because there is no other light around for miles. Sheer heaven! The small staff, with the exception of the manager, spoke no English, but we were able to communicate beautifully by smiling and waving our hands a bit. A perfect four night stay!
There was nothing we didn't like, except perhaps the European showers, which we encountered everywhere we went, not just at Agua d'Alte. We missed our modern American shower, but in so many other ways the Europeans have it all over us here in the usa. We sure didn't miss our pesticide treated, chemically preserved American food. Everything we ate was freshly picked or purchased at a local market.
