We liked the fact that the 1920s style had been retained. It was quaint, unusual and had atmosphere, breakfast was good, plus it is a beautiful building in keeping with the town, in an excellent location. Neither the restaurant nor the bar was open which was a great pity. The carpets throughout really need to be replaced as they look dirty (which we had read in online reviews), and we would have liked a double bed instead of two singles. |

The building, location, breakfast ,staff and ambience of the hotel was first class,we will be back on our next visit ti Coimbra. The proximity to the train station was a bonus to our budget(no taxi fares). Lack of designated smoking rooms. |

the location is ok in the center near the river. breakfast was quite fine. the room- due to the really old and worn out carpet and furniture the room gave the sensation of dirty. the walls must have been of paper because i heard every word the neighbours said. in general the rooms do not have quality of a 3* hotel although the entrance hall is pretty nice. the hotel has no parking and you have to search for a space in public parking areas on the street. |

Probably the most characteristic hotel in Coimbra. Perfect location, just next to the train station and one of the main squares of the city. Nice views to the river Mondego and the square. |

This hotel has an excellent location, perhaps the best in town. It is very convenient if you arrive by train (perhaps 3 minutes walk from the train station), and just a few steps from the main square; excellent river view too. |

The charm and atmosphere of the hotel make for a unique stay. Breakfast room is also full of character and the buffet was well equipped. Location is superb, close enough to walk to all the sights but room was still very quiet. A very special hotel for its design, charm and quirkiness, (very like a hotel straight from an Agatha Christie film) Overall very enjoyable stay. |

Very helpful staff, lovely view from spacious room. Great breakfast. Furnishings, carpets, etc. are now quite worn. Frommer described hotel as "faded grandeur" and there is a charm to the architecture and decor. But everything is now too worn out. |

The 1920s ambiance of the Astoria seeped through all aspects of our stay, starting with the lift!!!. The decor and furnishings were even more delightful than expected in that regard. The location was fantastic. The staff were extremely helpful and good natured. Things will not always go to plan regardless of the hotel rating or the country...Astoria had fewer than its fair share of problems!! And what value for money......I Look forward to visiting Coimbra again....but only if there is room at the Astoria....by the way, forget the corner rooms.....1st floor river side for people watching! As for those who complain about the decor, the mustiness, the 'old furnishings', the sometimes excentric service....THAT'S The point of staying there!!!! One small suggestion...I Was there for 2 weeks and needed some laundry done...unfortunately the staff didn't give us a firm idea of when it could be done, and indeed it eventually proved impossible due to staff shortages. Perhaps an arrangement with the nearby public laundry may provide a useful service to guests. |

The locatiopn of the hotel is great, especially for those who are visiting Coimbra. You could basically walk everywhere worth seeing. The building and the decoration (not that I particularly like classical furniture) are nostalgic, very nice. Rooms are spacious. Not many of these are left , especially for this prize. They did not know about the reservation through booking.com. I had to enter into my internet address and show them the reservation mail from booking.com. They had rooms available, so there was not problem at the end, but there could have been. The service is so slow, which is especially distressing when you have a little baby, but it is always like that in Portugal! |

The breakfast was good, with good variety. The hotel is so shabby, worn and dirty, it is difficult to sit in a chair, either in the public areas or in the hotel room. Your information said it had passed its peak -- that is an understatement. Work needs to be done to bring this up to a one star rating. |

Hotel Astoria is an art deco hotel and the owners have maintained the ambience and the detail of the period. The have paid real attention to maintaining the art deco detail when uprating the facilities, the lift for instance, to modern requirements. One soaks up the ambience of the period. The pressure in the shower (floor 4) was inadequate. |

The breakfast was very good. the staff were nice and freindly. the room was clean as was the bathroom. The lobby did not have a pleasant smell (perhaps from the resturant that is no longer there). The hotel needs to have to carpets cleaned really well I think. The room smelled fine though. |

buffet breakfast really great, the hotel was close to the center and train station and with a view on the Mondego river, the hotel itself was old fashioned and really beautiful. |

Perfect location to old town and train. Very nice breakfast. Nice big room and bath. Large window overlooking river. Seriously stained carpet. They need to freshen up the facilities. Street-side rooms are traffic noisy at night. |
