Score from 40 reviews Wonderful
Charming staff. Breakfast buffet was just ok, but the fresh fruit was outstanding. The buffet lunch was excellent value and the youngsters were keen and sweet. Stunning view from our balcony.
Blanket not duvet. Carpet, ugh.
Cleanliness, service very good. Very quiet. Wifi everywhere was really appreciated. Reliable and very good free connection
Lack of things to do. The unheated pool
- staff is very friendly and helpful - the room I was in is large, with a comfortable balcony and ocean view - the bed was comfortable with good quality white bed cover - Free WiFi working properly in my room, not only in the common spaces - availability of a sauna, without additional charges - good quality towels - good pressure of the water - spacious bathroom with bidet - very good fresh fruits served at the breakfast, but apart from this there was not very much to choose (would have appreciated some fresh vegetables for instance)
- poor lighting in the room and bathroom (this was the most unpleasant aspect for me) - impossibility to borrow ironing stuff from the reception - it would be good to have as well a kettle (tea facility) in the room - a larger vertical mirror would be also desirable - the bathroom would need some maintenance works / refurbishment (for instance the scratches of the bath tub's polish are creating a very poor impression) - some more attention when cleaning would be also appreciated... - more creativity when choosing the music in the restaurant (5 successive mornings of the 7 I spent there, one could hear exactly the same selection of Christmas songs + an indisputable preference for "Last Christmas I gave you my heart", which is a good melody, no offence, but too much is too much) - the location of the swimming pool just outside the restaurant didn't seem a wonderful choice beside the fact that I would have expected that the sauna and the swimming pool be on the same floor, so that one can easily pass from one to the other - some body lotion / hand cream supplied in the bathroom would be also nice Most of these are some simple aspects that could be easily improved by the administration of the hotel, that is why I have mentioned them more like a suggestion. Otherwise I was very unpleased to hear each evening until late the loud music from the restaurant nearby, but this could not be changed so easily (maybe some double-glazed windows could help)
The staff and everything else
A clean, comfortable and quiet hotel with friendly and very helpful staff. The food was outstanding. Breakfast had 6-7 different sorts of home made bread and the cakes were moist and moreish. Dinner was remarkable for its quality, freshness and value. I have never been anywhere twice in my life but I'm going back there in February 2015. I highly recommend this hotel.
There wasn't anything about this hotel that I could criticise or give a negative comment about.
Staff very friendly always willing to help. Food excellent. Rooms comfortable and very clean. Great location.
No tea making facility in room.
What a shame, it could be a real little gem of a hotel, only 20 rooms, a training establishment, the staff are it's best asset. The hotel is out of town, no problem if you have a car or don't mind long walks up steep hills. The Sunday buffet lunch at €10 each was superb quality & lots of locals eating there which is a good sign, the breakfast was a very good selection of breakfast goodies, the hotel was spotless, the rooms are dated but because it's so clean that's not a problem, it's rated as a 4*, but if your a traveller! not a true 4*, maybe a true reflection would be a good 3*, with potential, & at €55 for the night, with breakfast good value, just get the air con problem sorted (but alas this problem is over a year old, so don't hold your breath), if it was fixed we would book in again.
No air conditioning in the bedroom, with a temperature of 37 degrees in the room, it was impossible to sleep, we opened the balcony door but it was so hot & with no breeze it was unpleasant, I have been in cooler sauna's, the holtel provided a fan in the room, it was broken & they didn't have any spare fans, sadly this did spoil our stay.
Clean Friendly personel
Zone is on a steep hill, need a car Old building Elevator dangerous, needs remodeling Air conditioning is insuffiecient Furniture of low quality
Food Friendliness Wifi
Quiet location, nice balcony view, clean room, great breakfast, friendly and helpful staff.
Comfortable, big and clean rooms with seaview. Very good buffet breakfast. Helpful, polite, kind stuff. Silent environment. Funchal city center is 10 minutes by bus, bus stop is only 100 metres. Free car parking in the hotel.
Wi-fi access is limited in the building, even in the lobby it was weak.
We liked almost everything about this hotel. The rooms are spacious, you have all you need in the (again: spacious) bath room, the balcony has a wonderful ocean view and is the perfect place to relax with a glass of wine - or in our case banana liquor from the island - after a full day of activities on the island. We were there at the end of July. We slept with the windows open for a cool sea breeze (we don't like airconditioning) and sometimes we woke up with the loveliest scents from the flowers from the hotel garden. The pool is really nice too. The staff of the hotel are friendly and efficient. As it's Madeira's hotel school, each night they serve a value for money day menu prepared by the students. When we were there it was 16.50€ which included an appetizer, main course, dessert, wine and water (and plenty of it) as well as a coffee. The food was super tasty and the presentation exquisite. Each morning, again, the students made a wonderful breakfast buffet which was nicely presented. I especially liked the healthy fresh fruit selection. Finally, all this for a really value for money price. Highly recommendable!
We almost liked everything. What could be improved: wifi in the rooms and the possibility to make a choice of the appetizer - now it was a surprise, but some people might be for example allergic to fish. While for us the location was not an issue as we had a car (Plus: there's free parking!), if you don't it's good to note that the hotel is not in the town centre or touristic centre. There is a good bus connection though.
It a good hotel, very clean, far from funchal centre, but close to other attractions. There is are a couple of shops nearby. Our room had a balcony with a table and chairs. The service is great, everybody there is very professional. The breakfast includes something for all tastes and I especially appreciated the fruit plate. We had dinner there one evening. The food was ok, with great presentation, and they keep filling up your water and wine glasses. This hotel is very good value for money.
Pillows were not very comfortable, too stiff. The swimming pool is shallow, rather for kids. The furniture is a bit outdated, but pleasant and functional.
Very nice breakfast, good mattress, free parking, quiet location.
We were expecting a room with sea view and were quite disappointed with our room solely allowing a view to the houses on the other side - you only could see a bit sea leaning over the balcony.
Location and food are excellent. Staff also note 10. The next vacation will be still there. We have much left to see, although I stayed 10 days. I recommend it warmly.
We have stayed 3 nights in February. Breakfast, View from the room to the ocean, enough space in the rooms, huge bathroom. Personnel is helpful and very professional. Good value for money in February)
Actually - nothing special. Just small stuff like weak hairdryer, not working lock on the balcony...
their helpful response to a sudden departure due to bereavement. The quality and value for money of the food esp evening meal.
The stuff at the reception is really friendly and helpful. The location of the hotel is a little bit far from the city center. But we rent a car so it wasn’t a problem for us. The hotel has free parking. All the rooms have incredible ocean view. It was unforgettable to seat at the balcony and to view the sunset while drinking wine. The hotel is near the professional cooking school so they have delicious and reasonably priced dinners from the students. On the whole I would definitely recommend this hotel.
The hotel is quiet old so some equipment such as hairdryer, tv-set, shower is old-fashioned. The same I could tell about the furniture. The heater didn’t work so it was quiet cold during the nights. But the main drawbacks are the poor and unvaried breakfast and unavailability of wi-fi in the rooms. In our century it’s really strange not to provide internet access.
location, service, food
no wifi in the room
Very helpfull and polite staff.
Problems with internet connection.
Very very nice hotel with excellent staff. Pleasent atmosphere, good breakfast, nice ocean view from terrace. Great common areas. The hotel is located in 10 minutes walking from the beach, quite far from city center with high tourists concentration. I really enjoyed.
Old fashioned hairdryer. As everywhere in south a bit quantity of insects (ants) appeared in bathroom from time to time, but not in catastrophic amount.
