The location but was a long walk to the closed off street with shopping. The woman working at the desk was friendly and helpful. The parking was great but you would have to book in early to get a space Food was good. Don't arrive too early. Manager very aloof. Hotel area was seedy.

Despite a few negatives, Hotel America, it is rather a pleasant place to stay in many ways. The staff are very friendly and nothing seems too much trouble for them. When I booked in, the receptionist apologised for overcharging me by 3 euros on my pre-paid booking (it was so cheap, I would never have noticed if she had not pointed it out) and she insisted on giving me the 3 euros back. She then invited me to come to the hotel bar for a glass of port - very civilised. Breakfast was on a par with really expensive hotels. There was a huge spread and you could pick from hot food, cold meats and cheeses, cereals, breads, croissants, about 6 different jams (tubs and jars), delicious cakes and pastries, fresh fruit, tinned fruit, fruit juices, tea, coffee, water. The cakes and pastries were different each day and some of them (E.G. a magnificent chocolate cake) would probably have cost you 5 or 6 euros per portion in a café. So breakfast was excellent. If you asked the staff anything, they would give you very good suggestions for restaurants and where the best fado was etc. As for location, it is pretty central and only a few minutes walk down to the main shopping area and sights. So, it turned out to be a pretty good place to be and quite restful. Hotel America is a fairly small hotel, with a rather unassuming frontage. It is the sort of hotel that I really should not like at all! The reception area was rather small and cramped and not very appealing. The lift was very slow and ponderous. Everything in the hotel looked rather dated and an upgrade to the equipment and facilities would not come amiss. The bedroom was again rather small, although they had managed to fit in a full bathroom suite - and the shower was superb. The wardrobe (the only hanging and storage space) was an absolute joke, being cut down to fit around a projecting wall. There was no safety deposit box in the bedroom, nor safe in reception - although reception said that they had never had any problems with theft.

Staff very friendly on arrival and helped with parking and recommendations. Bar area really nice and good breakfast choice. Only negative would be that if it is a family hotel that has baby cots then one would expect there to be a high chair for babies in the breakfast area. Unfortunately we were informed that there are none. A minor point that could be easily addressed.

Excellent value for money including free parking (a rarity in Porto) and breakfast, plus free WiFi. Room was well equipped and not small as expected. Noisy being on the street front but not an issue for us. Very helpful reception staff and bar staff.

Buffet breakfast was of excellent standard. Room was basic but clean and of acceptable standard. We were at the back of the hotel & found it quiet, however, other members of family had three rooms at the front of the hotel and did not sleep all night due to screeching of car tyres and people shouting throughout the night on the road infront of the hotel. *** Would only recommend this hotel on the previso that a room at the rear is booked.*****

An excellent location, uphill on the famous shopping street. The staff spoke excellent English, and was both helpful and friendly. The rooms were clean, and the buffet breakfast, and bar for after hours. There is a working elevator. WiFi is free and a good speed in the breakfast room (unfortunately not available in our room). A definite 3 star+ for 2 star price.

Good comfortable room - a friend and I had a superior twin - 2 double beds, air conditioning, black out shutters, TV, spacious room. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice. Staff were friendly and gave information about the area. 5 minute walk to Metro or 1--15 minute walk to river area.

Free internet wireless, good breakfast. My room was in the first floor, exactly to the front of the street, so, too noisy. From 6 am to 11 pm too noisy and small room.

hot breakfast waking up to a room infested by ants and an unsympathetic staff! (they were in my bed, on me, in my suitcase, everything... there was a steady stream of them appearing from under the fridge and disappearing under the armoir... staff did nothing to help me out and didn't offer anything in terms of a discount of a replacement room to shower in (I was checking out a few hours later anyway) gross! My room was immediately off the lobby and loud at night. It's not exactly a savory part of town come nightfall and there was a steady stream of visitors and women arguing both inside and outside the lobby.
