- Lovely decorated vaguely aristocratic country house; - nice and extremely quiet rooms, a lovely pool, a splendid chapel and an impressive outside area; - solid breakfast with a great choice of cheese; - helpful owners. - The charge for an extra bed is absurd: more expensive than an extra bed in the Ritz-Carlton in Lower Manhattan, in the Royal Garden in London or in the Radisson Blu Hotel in Berlin; - bedrooms are quite comfortable, but in hotter nights, the absence of air conditioning is likely to be noticed. The ceiling fan seems quite inadequate in a country house of this quality and price; - the pool is cleaned during the morning (it's still being cleaned after 10 o'clock, even though you can use it then), which is quite unpleasant.

We loved the overall decor of the place--all the many sitting rooms, dining room, courtyard for breakfast, and grounds were absolutely beautiful. Our room was so well appointed and attractive that we enjoyed just hanging out there. We also loved the infinity pool overlooking the Atlantic and all the surrounding gardens. Quinta das Mercês is a really special place that we would love to revisit and that we will definitely recommend to friends and family. Quinta das Mercês is impeccable and would be a 5-star hotel if it were not for three things. The first are the plastic chairs and tables around the pool and in the courtyard used for breakfast, the second are the fake flowers, and the third is the unreliable internet access. If Quinta das Mercês invested in fresh flowers, some kind of wood furniture (teak would be ideal), and a reliable internet connection, this hotel would definitely be the ultimate luxury hotel. These are seemingly small things, but for the discerning traveler, these things do matter and do justify better the much higher price.
