Perfect place for a city break. Close to Trindade, easy to walk to the city centre. Very nice and helpful staff. A clean room. Good wi-fi.
Very tidy and comfy and the staff was incredibly nice! The view to the small yard was amazing. The room was warm and spacious.
The pressure of the water in the shower was a bit too low and the bathroom was a bit too cold for a winter morning.
Walking distance from city centre. Very pleasant venue that is worth recomending. At EUR 30 great value for money.
lovely old renovated building, clean rooms, cheap rates
Its a little out of the city centre, but still walkable distance
Location close to the centre High level of hygiene Polite and kind staff Comfortable bed Nearby supermarket, post office, good restaurants and shops Free WiFi
Single room was cold and the window was in the shower room No use of fridge No central heating, just oil fitted electric radiators
I have never stayed a guest house like this, their standart is too high even more than of some 3 star hotels. The rooms decorated very well and the location is close to all spots.
We arrived at Alvares Cabal after dark and wondered what we had let ourselves in for as the neighbourhood seemed run down and just a tad scary. But, the friendliness and welcoming nature of our hosts more than made up for our initial trepidation. By the light of day, Alvares Cabal is an area loaded with character and with many genuine dining options nearby. The guest house is charming and a welcoming haven in a fascinating city. The friendliness of the property managers have been noted elsewhere and we can only affirm that. Their suggestions for the highlights of the city were spot-on and saved us much valuable time. For drivers, the car parking situation can be fraught but fortune smiled upon us and we scored a spot across the street where we left the car for the duration of our stay. Porto is a walking city. Alvares Cabal is not centrally located but it is in an appropriate spot where you can start and end a walking loop of this fascinating city.
Not being able to book an extra night because the inn was full.
Very stylish house, old, but in excellent shape. Great atmosphere, very helpful staff. 20 min walk to downtown. Reliable Wi-Fi access.
Good location, helpfull and friendly staff
Location is perfect, near from every single spot in the city! Staff is terrific, Rui is an excellent guy who helps you to know all in Porto, he speaks Portuguese, english and French, also gives you a map pointing every spot and the best way ti get then if you want
Wifi is just in the lobby
Guest house is just amazing. Lovely staff that is willing to help you, the owner of the guest house holds wine degustations, interior of the hotel is remarkable. It is also worth noting delicious and cheap breakfasts. We really enjoyed staying, thanks!!
Very friendly receptionists, nice and clean room
Economy rooms are towards a busy road and therefore rather noisy.
- after complaining about the loud room we could change the room for the second night - friendly staff
- rooms on side of the street are very loud, impossible to sleep with open window - poor breakfast included - musty smell in the house - rooms haven't much daylight
It was what we wanted, Portuguese hospitality and service. It was just simply nice. Hosts were very nice and provided all the assistance we needed. It was a beautiful house and wifi was fast. Will definitely consider staying again if we go back.
Breakfast was a bit expensive for what you get when you compare with other places. The room was a bit small with limited facility to hang clothes. An iron (and laundry facilities) would have been useful but I have to be honest that I did not ask.
This is a great place to stay. The rooms are beautifully decorated. Staff is very kind and helpful. Location is great. But what we loved most, was the wine tasting in the backyard - the owner's Dad, who organizes them, is one of the most kind, intelligent and welcoming person we've ever met.
Staff so friendly and helpful Restaurant that staff recommended was superb, one of the best parts of our trip
Would have liked air con
Lovely breakfast with home made jams, very nice welcome by father of owner, giving us a perfect itinerary for our day and a half visit, with a glass of local wine!
Little bit further out of the centre than we'd hoped. Apr. 15 min walk.
Raul and his Dad were both very courteous and pleasant to talk to The guests are allowed to use the garden and the small kitchen in the guest house The room was very well decorated and overall, the guest house was very clean
The bathroom had clear glass! even for a couple it can be embarassing. The room did not have airconditioning or ceiling fan and the small table fan (with a timer of maximum two hours) was rather inadequate for the summer of July
The bed was very small and uncomfortable
Location, laundry service, free Wi-Fi.
We had triple room with only one window and direct view was the door of another room - distance maybe 0,5 m. We feelt like other guests are loudly passing trough our room - not very funny at night. Guesthouse has 24h reception - they don't give keys and each time guest should ring - sound is so loud - it feels like ring was in our room - not very funny at 0:30AM, then 1:00AM and the last was 2:00AM. It was our two last nights in Portugal and both sleepless.
Kind owner and guests, tasty white port vine offered as a probe, beautiful room.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Good location. Wonderful atmosphere in the rooms.
A bit small rooms.
It was very cosy and felt like at home. Jorge was such a great host, very friendly and charming. Our room was good and so was the terrace where we would have our drinks in the evening. Location is quite central, we really enjoyed our stay at Alvarez Cabral guesthouse!
Bathroom needs a bit of a repair
If you are planning a visit to Porto then I recommend this lovely guest house. As soon as you arrive at the front door you are made to feel welcome. Finding the guest house is made easy due to directions being provided in advance. It is within walking distance to the major city sites and river, as well as the metro and train station. Each family member involved in running this guest house was friendly, doing everything they could to make the stay enjoyable. Upon arrival a map was provided with suggestions of places to visit, the best way to approach the city, as well as great tips for the area. The room/bathroom was spacious, spotlessly clean and with a comfortable bed - perfect after a day of sight seeing. The patio was a relaxing place to sit - and a perfect place for the wine tasting nights which were full of good conversations and laughs. Overall, staying at Guest House Alvares Cabral was a great experience, adding to the enjoyment of Porto.
Very close walking distance to the historic centre and Port caves. Owners/staff were very helpful, mapping out locations for us and even put on a wine tasting night with sardines, cheese, etc. The place felt very homey.
