Staff were very helpful & friendly. We were made very welcome.

The hotel & gardens could do with some TLC but I realise that the property is very old.

    Staff Location Historic building

Dusty and not well kept which is a shame because the building and garden have a lot of potential

There was a general sense of tiredness about the place which was a shame as it has enormous potential. Children within the household shouting into the night.

We stayed for 8 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. This hotel is ideally situated in Cascais, close to all services and amenities. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The hotel was the country villa of the Portugese King and retains several charming features from that time including the frescoes in the dining room and the chapel. (Despite the royal connections, however, don't expect 21st century luxury. It is after all a period residence.) The rooms are large and spacious. No doubt there are more modern hotels in the area, but none, I'd guess as full of character and charm.

The gardens could do with some maintenance, but in fairness there is so much to do and see in the Cascais/Sintra region we would not have used the facility extensively

Love the building with the little chapel inside and the location is close to all amenities !

Having stayed in the Solar Dom Carlos 3 years ago we were very disappointed to find the gardens were left overgrown and unattended so we had no place to sit and relax as we did on our previous stay, also breakfast was very poor, with a charge of €1 for a fried egg and €1.50 for scrambled egg, ridiculous. We definitely will not be staying here again! Eileen & Sharon, Ireland.

the location is superb, in the old city centre

although it is a beautiful historic building, the accommodation is a bit dated and cleanliness of stairs/corridors should be significantly improved.

Residencial Solar Dom Carlos is located in a historic building dating back to at last the 17th century. It is located in a quiet street. but very close to the central town square and the sea shore. The dining room where breakfast is served has authentic decoration from the period, eventhough it looks better on the photographs. The owner was very helpful during our short stay.

Although the rooms are spacious they are extremely dark due to thick walls and small windows, so that even during the middle of a sunny day it is difficult to function inside without electric light. It doesn't help that all the lights are equipped with very low luminance bulbs, certainly for economy reasons. The same is true for the bathroom where it is hard to go about your toilette. Because the woodwork is also historic, the doors to the bedroom close just about letting in noises from the corridor. Breakfast was basic.

The location is ideal, the staff are friendly, breakfast is basic. The rooms are quite spacious.

The building and the garden area are very tired looking and neglected.

Very old buildibg with very uncomfortable rooms. It's dark everywhere like in prison, smell of damp, no breakfast at all in fact (eggs and omlet for extra payment), just coffe and tea with bread. The location isn't suitable. It takes about 15 minutes to reach the nearest restaurant street. The price for such conditiobs is to high, but don't forget that it's Cascais and prices for hotels are quite high everywhere.

The location was perfect and you did not need to hire a car. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The continental breakfast was plain but plentiful. The bedrooms were spacious. This is not a branded chain hotel and has typical Portuguese furnishings.

The facilities, whilst good value for the price, are in need of upgrading.

The access to a backyard garden was unexpected although the garden sitting area was overrun with weeds and dried leaves

Expesive for what we received; breakfast was very poorly organized and catered

We loved the location of Solar Dom Carlos and history or the building. All the staff really nice and friendly.

Our room no 2 smelled weird, like a crypt or something.. Not to clean. And the garden doesn't look like on the photograph at all, pity, such a lovely old trees there.. I wish the place would get more love and care..

The location was good. It was a very quick walk to a nice restaurant and to the beach. Also when I had an emergency the staff was very kind and helpful

The room was uncomfortable, musty, and in disrepair. The bed was like a rock, the shades were broken, and the room smelled musty and dusty. The bathroom had mold on the wall and the tub was dangerous to get out of. No WIFI in rooms so you have to check email in a common area.

Very nice hotel! We were there only one night, so that more can not say anything. Near the center, the train station, the beach (although hard to find), rooms are comfortable. Friendly staff. We liked the patio garden, there comfortably sit under the stars.)))) Breakfast is small but we did not go hungry. Very beautiful church in the home! The hotel is not big, not pretentious and pompous, but comfortable and cute, more like a big old house than a hotel. There all at home.

We liked the location but it was the splendour that was! The woman was very pleasant and helpful.

While it was once a lovely historical property it has been sadly neglected and left to deteriorate. The pictures in the brochures and on the internet are most misleading. The stair carpet is very old and frayed and filthy dirty. The bedding is shabby and pillows were moldly and need replacement. The drapes were hanging askew and light bulbs were missing or burnt out. We had to ask for towels, light bulbs. There was mold on the bathroom ceiling. The "secret garden" was overgrown and shabby. Not a place to relax in or even visit. While the breakfast was "free", the orange juice was Tang - and in a country where fresh oranges sell for 1 euro for 5 kilos, this is unacceptable. One of our party had stayed there 15 years ago and it seemed as if nothing had been done to the property by way of maintenance since then.

Friendly staff - family atmosphere. Beautiful historical building. Big rooms. Conveniently located, 5min by foot from the city center and ocean front

The fact that it is a historical building is also a negative: Rooms are not sound-proof, so one can hear any noise in the hallway. Facilities such as the bathrooms are on the old side. Solid, but very basic. Breakfast (in the beautiful breakfast hall!) is very basic. One gets a basket of bread and some jam and butter, a Nescafe machine is in the corner and some juice, a plate of cheese and a plate of ham are stowed away in a fridge in the corner. Some cereal and a bit of fruit is also available. I guess for the very competitive price per night one can't expect more, but we were still quite underwhelmed. One can order eggs for an additional little fee.

Friendly stuff. Good location. No problem with parking. Big room was given instead of double.

Linen was dirty. Water drain was repaired after several remindings. Exactly at 7.30 smoke smell appeared in the room.
