We find Elvas a delightful town and return when in the region. This is our hotel of choice, full of character, comfortable and friendly. Lovely garden with great views where you can enjoy a glass of wine (your own when bar closed). Good, free, car park. Nothing. The restaurant is now closed but there a couple of very good and reasonably priced places within 5 mins walk.

The rooms are very spacious and clean. The breakfast was good and the staff helpful. The location was also excellent and everywhere in walking distance for us There was no bar in the hotel which we found odd for a four star hotel, and the Internet was not always available. We are a group of very fit walkers however if we were not and struggled with mobility this is not a good location as it is very hilly

The location was fantastic, built into the walls of the largest inland fortification in the world. Literally walking out of your bedroom on to the walls of the fortress and taking in the views of the aqueduct and surrounding countryside was marvellous. The hotel has lots of character and our room was spacious and comfortable. In terms of overall value for money it was excellent and provided the perfect start to our holiday. Not much not to like. While we were there the restaurant was closed but plenty of restaurants in the town itself.

Interesting old building in convenient position for sightseeing. Our room was large and bathroom was a good size too. Good value in winter. No restaurant at Hotel but excellent local style cooking restaurant close by recommended by Hotel staff - Largar? Ordinary buffet breakfast. Parking outside of Hotel wall but it was free.

Stayed here for one night in December on our way to Lisbon and found it to be a very nice hotel. Helpful staff on reception, easy to find and free parking. The room was large, nice big bed and a large bathroom. Nice breakfast, bacon egg sausage etc. continental breakfast as well. For dinner recommend restaraunt O Lagar across the street from the hotel. Good food at normal prices. After breakfast we went for a walk around the car park to look at the views and were met by a view of a man taking a dump behind a car. Not really the sight we were looking for. Probably not hotels fault but it was in their car park. We would still stay there again.

Hotel Sao Joao is a wonderful place in Elvas near the border between Spain and Portugal (Elvas is in Portugal). The city itself was chosen as a Unesco site just few months before. Impressive walls constructions on different levels. The hotel is by the city entrance and it is stunning, both the location and the hotel itself. The it's great value for money.

Top class elegant hotel, which surpassed our expectations. Better than the Pousadas we've stayed in and at half to a third of the price. Excellent location for exploring Elvas and the beautiful Alentejo countryside.

Large rooms with excellent breakfast.Car park was a bonus and location was ideal for exploring Elvas.See the military museum just outside the city wall. One room was really dark and Wi fi was a little unreliable.

The location was lovely and there was free parking, which made our day. Views from our balcony were beautiful. Everything is comfortable and well appointed. The staff were very helpful. The elevator is very temperamental...we got stuck for a short time as it kept going up and down between first and second floors and the doors would not open on either floor. We finally resolved this by selecting ground floor, where to our great relief the doors opened. We reported this immediately and the maintenance man clearly knew about the problem and said he would fix it. We had only chosen the elevator because there seemed to be no other way to access our floor. However, we subsequently found the fire stairs and used them.

The location is just within the city walls and makes for easy walking in the city. Their own car park is convenient. The staff are very friendly and helpful amd make for a relaxed, enjoyable stay in a clean, spacious hotel with a breakfast providing various choices. Excellent value. This comment does not reflect on this hotel or the city. To the north is Campo Maior which has a castle and fortifications. We were sightseeing at mid-day very close to the castle where my wife was assualted and her handbag stolen by four youths. She was concussed and needed stiches above the eye with facial and body bruising. Two separate Portuguese authorities said that it was a dangerous area and noted that Romanian immigrants camped nearby and were alleged to be responsible for similar incidents. Thus be aware that Campo Maior around the castle is a risky place.

Typical of the manor house style of hotel found in the Alentejo. Good room, standard breakfast. Not a major issue, but breakfast was basic and much depleted by 9.30 - yet available until 10.30am.

The superb and thoughtfully converted old building, furnishings, large room size, the general atmosphere of classy elegance. Also, I was able to park my Ducati motorcycle safely inside the courtyard's entrance. The restaurant, bar and swimming pool were all closed because "the season finished on 30 September" = the previous day. This means we will be going back for a longer stay within a year or two, during the season when all the facilities are open!

The rooms were clean, tasteful and we had a fabulous bathroom. Breakfast was also good and plentiful. The location just on the walls was very convenient. The parking was rather tight. The atmosphere was more corporate than leisure-focused - this is an observation, not a criticism

The only hotel actually in the town of Elvas with parking. Lovely old building - rooms and beds very spacious. Bed and breakfast was very reasonably priced and we would certainly return there. The shower water was cool at 7.30 a.m. but half an hour later the water was lovely and hot - I got up too early!!

We had a really nice stay at this hotel. The location is superb, the hotel is beautiful with a nice courtyard and a small but pretty pool area. All rooms are different, our twin on the first floor overlooking a corner of the courtyard wasn´t big but nicely furnished with very comfortable beds. Very good value for money. Elvas itself is a nice non- touristy town, not to be missed. The bathroom was small, but nice and modern. Unfortunately, the toilet itself was in a space so small that it was impossible to use the toilet paper while sitting down. Major drawback.

Fabulous ambience, superb location and views, beautifully furnished, quiet and private. Helpful and unassuming staff. Unique and charming courtyard leading to gardens and pool built into the very ramparts of the town. Easily accessed and private car parking. Hotel Sao Joao De Deus - A perfect base from which to visit this Unesco World Heritage Town. Almost all one could require were this a First Class Posadas Hotel however the beautiful restaurant where breakfast was served did not provide evening meals though we understood that this will be provided in the future. If so - where else would one want to dine?
