Hostel CelicaMetelkova 8, 1000 Ljubljana (Show map) Good, Score from 169 reviews“Hostel Celica is an awesome place to stay. The atmosphere is warm and exciting with some type of entertainment going on every evening. It is fantastic to have "free Wi-Fi" and the use of washing machines and tumble dryers. The rooms are very comfortable and the ablutions excellent. The breakfasts fill you up for the day! The staff are friendly and accommodating. Although this hostel used to be a prison, we were free to come and go as we please. Ha! Well worth a visit!”

Sabie
The Celica is top of the Lonely Planet list as the Hippest Hostel and named One of the 25 Ultimate Places to Stay by Rough Guides. Sleep in a former cell with bars on the door and on the window Hostel Celica on Metelkova Street in the center of Ljubljana provides this unique experience. Located in the immediate vicinity of the Main Bus and Railway Station and 770 yards from the center of the city, the old military barracks of Austro-Hungary stand to this day. The former prison has been demilitarized only after Slovenia's independence and the departure of the Federal Yugoslav Army. It was renovated and transformed into an outstanding youth hostel in 2003. The renovation process was supervised by more than 80 Slovenian and foreign artists who are proud members of the Sestava Society. Upon arrival, you will get 30 minutes to surf the internet for free. 10% discount coupons for Postojna Cave and Atlantis Water Park can be obtained at the reception. Hotel Rooms: 29

It was an interesting building and convenient for the railway. When I arrived at my next hotel and took off my clothes I had around 200 bites all over me. I had noticed some bugs at night which looked like apple pips but as the widow was open and I had no idea what a bed bug looked like I was not unduly concerned. I have now identified the bites which are all over me, as bed bugs

Interesting place and not a far from the centre. The walls seem to be made of paper. As did the cornflakes I had for breakfast which didn't include coffee (that had to be paid for seperately). 69 Euro was a bit pricey considering it's a hostel and one has to make one's own bed (and take the sheets back to reception on check-out).

Very pleasant staff. Some rooms are wonderful Some rooms are not as attractive as the others. We first got a room with a bunk bed, so we switched it.

The experience, the staff and the food. The breakfast was very basic. It's not good value for money. It's far too expensive for a hostel.

Individually designed cells - the artwork grows on you. Dinner a bargain at $6 all you can eat. Ten $ as a key deposit?! You have my cc - if I lose it charge me. Check in not till 3pm. Make your own bed means you get to see the mattress - yuk!

Great location, easy to walk to from the train/bus station. Right next to Metelkova a really cool hip alternative bar area. The hostel has three cafe/bars with different themes, great priced drinks, free breakfast and they even have narguila(hookah waterpipes with flavoured tobacco) in one of their cafes. Staff are great and there is always something going on here, it seems like the hostel tries hard to create a social atmosphere and get you connected with the city. They also provide free 1/2 hour of internet. This would be a good place I think for solo travelers, or backpackers that want to have things to do in the evening and get connected with other travellers. It is quite a young crowd though I think it's pricey compared to other ljubljana hostels. Also in the summer it was stifling hot in the rooms making it difficult to sleep in. Quite a young crowd(early twenties).

Extremely friendly and helpful stuff. Also they have good food for a reasonable price. Due to parties in the area it can be quite noisy during the night.

Good location, a 15 minute walk to central Ljubljana. Good outside bar area. Clean rooms and shared bathrooms. Relaxed atmosphere and fun theme - a really cool experience! In the summer, with no aircon and a small fan which could not reach up to the bed, it was extremely hot in the room.

We stayed in the top floor. There was no ventilation at all, Ljubljana was going through a heat wave and the room did not cool down at all during the night.

Its rather interesting to see the cells designed by the different artists in a former prison. The breakfast is included. The room was very noisy, there is a constant noise in the inner yard, and the so called air-conditioning (blower) in the room keeps so much noise that its impossible to sleep with that thing on (not that it would even really help). Although you need to take off your own sheets, you will only get the rooms at 3 pm!

It's a former prison that kept up a prison motif with the decor, which was amusing. We had two rooms, one of which also had some interesting wall hangings and books. Breakfast was good too. We thought we'd reserved one room with a double bed and one with two twins, but in fact both rooms had two twins. Three of our four beds were reached by climbing ladders, one of which had a bad rung. The internet connection was very weak in the rooms, although it was fine in the breakfast area. Also one of our rooms overlooked a plaza with loud music until midnight or so. The other was one the other side of the hall and had no noise problems. (This may sound like a long list, but on the whole we were happy enough with the hostel.)
