Loved the family apartment. Stayed with our teenager and pre-teen children-- it was great! The staff was really pleasant and the hotel was great- they helped us with everything we needed. The place is secure and serene-- would definitely stay there again.

Everything was perfect The beach at the hotel has a lot of seaweeds and other sea creatures (sea urchins, hermit crabs, starfish, etc) which are very cool to look at during low tide but make swimming less pleasant during high tide (I walked on a sea urchin barefoot-- ouch!) However, Kendwa beach is just 45min walk away or 15000 tsh (less than $10) by taxi.

The open nature; Not too many tourists; peacefulness, the colour of the water so distinctive of Mnarani, the closeness of the waterfront; the wonderful layout of the setup with numerous hangmats & hammocks & hanging beds etc. It really is as indicated on the marketing video ! Good administrative abilities of management before arrival. Ideal for couples of all ages that want to forget about normal live and its worries ! We'll certainly visit again

The so-called "self catering" house had no stove connected and no crocery, nor pots & pans - we chose this more expensive option for the sake of travelling with babies ! the geyser and aircons had to be repaired (also TV) but quick responce was appreciated (although the batteries of aircon of main bedroom lasted onloy 24 hours ! Daily cleaning is contribuiting to stay in routine instead of forgetting about time. Settling the account was not desirable - nearly double charged for services if not controlled carefully ! Double checking is crucial. This resort is not really catering for babies (no baby chairs in dining area; no playground for babies - staff not aware of baby needs) Food portions are not always adequate for the amount of diners - rather too little food that too much !

Loved really everything! The location was fantastic as was the view. (Great spot to see the sunset) Loved the dinners that were included in the price - everyday was something new and different and the meals tasted fantastic!!!!! The owner and his staff are so wonderful! They really made us feel welcome! The swings and hammocks are to die for! Rooms are basic but very clean. The village is a short distant walk but in the heat if feels farther. Would return in a heartbeat!

Most of the staff were friendly and helpful. Beautiful location. Bar tenders were great.

I did not like the menu. The food was mostly curried and not the fresh sea food that I had hoped for. There are a few staff members that do their colleagues a disservice by being rude and not helpful. I would have also appreciated a receipt upon check out.

Nice (if a bit isolated) location if you don't mind walking (was advised not to walk after dusk). Beach vista with local fishing vessels very nice to look at.

Room required insect killing spray to be used liberally due to many bugs and mosquito. I suspect this was due to the doors being left open during cleaning as there were screens on the windows). Dangerous watercraft (sit on top kayak) was provided which sank due to a broken seal cap to the storage compartment which resulted in gradual filling with water in less than calm conditions. We (two experienced kayakers) were rescued by rope from patrons at an adjacent resort as we were pushed by the current near their pier. Fortunately we were wearing different life jackets to the one's initially offered (on our request). Staff at no time (including the resort owner after seeing a photo of the sit on top kayak completely submerged) acknowledged any responsibility, and only issued an insincere apology on direct request. Given the potential consequences (high tide meant there was no beach available for landing, only rock walls), I consider engaging in water activities a potential risk. I would closely supervise any minors engaging in such recreational activities at this hotel. As with some (not all) resorts in the area, the indifferent attitude of staff extended to the hospitality staff.

Friendly and helpful staff, beautiful location and grounds, delisious and well prepared food for dinner

too small portions for the food-specifically the dinner (although the food was top notch), too small lunch menu, bar was not well-stocked

The staff really have a great rapport for accommodating the guests and Margaret does go out of her way to help with details. Genuine!

The food was limited and portion size was quite small for what you though you were getting. Need to have a resort store or something to get additional snacks. This may be a factor of not being there during high season. Please keep the bar stocked!!!

The staff were all friendly and helpful. The taxi came on time to meet us at the ferry port and the driver was very friendly and helpful. The facilities are great. We particularly liked the swinging beds outside our cottages and the pool. Everything in the room, air-con, shower, lights etc. They made a lot of effort with the presentation of the food. A very enjoyable experience and would recommend this hotel.

    Nothing to dislike!

I had the privilege during the last two months to tour the island of Zanzibar twice and in that time made use of quite a number of other hotels and beach cottages. Some were good and quite a number of these were nothing to write home about. Some of these services at these places were really not up to standard, but I have noticed that they obviously have made enough money and it all comes down to a no care policy. I eventually at the end of my tour had the privilage to make use of the Mnarani Beach Cottages, and were pleasantly surprised to find that these units had for various reasons the best value for money. Pictures on their website were up to date, unlike many other places across the island only had pictures of quite a few years ago. The personel are all well trained, all in uniform displayed with name tags easily recognizable by knowing who is staff and who your visitors are. The reception area had the best information of all by far, easily explained by a very competent front desk receptionest. She also explained all the resort facilities in excellent detail and accompanied me to my cottage, showing and explaining all in fine detail. Restuarant personnel were always friendly, and quick to respond on taking orders. What really came to mind was the bread basket that was covered at all times agains flies and insects. My room was cleaned each and every morning and then on my return from my daily walks pleasantly suprised by a bouquet of flowers in my room. The owner himself also interacted well with all the visitors, which gave a person the security that he is always available if needed. He also gave me friendly advice as to where it's save to walk. All areas were swept clean before breakfast, which always gave it a clean and fresh look. The fact that there is a 24/7 telephone line in each room, was very helpfull to be able to phone reception any time when needed.

The half board package was good value. The dinners were excellent and included 3 courses. Staff was pleasant and smiling.

Our room was bit smaller then it looked on the picture. Lunch at the restaurant was poor: half of the salad that we ordered was an onion and cheesburger came with no cheese. The person we were served by had very limited english. The pool was cleaned every day but the little foot wash next to it was full of rotten leaves and wasn't cleaned once during out stay! There is no beach at the resort, to swim in the see it's much easier at Kendwa. There is a massage place at Mnarani but with no opening hours or a note that you must book a day in advance. Taxi and activities are bit over priced compare to other resorts.

Mnarani Beach Cottages are located on the northern tip of Zanzibar with beautiful views of the Indian Ocean. The dinners were nice as you could try some Swahili specialities. The pool area was a great place to relax. At nights, the hotel seems deserted as even the bar closes around 10 PM and it becomes really quiet. But if you want to relax, enjoy the stars, listen to the waves, it is the place for you. I think the only major thing that the hotel is missing is a nice beach and swimming facilities. I would recommend Mnarani to provide shuttles to Kendwa where you can really enjoy swimming. Walking to Kendwa through the beach takes about 1 hour, a nice but a difficult walk under the heat. Shuttles would have been perfect though.

My cottage was very small. There wasn't even a chair in the cottage that you could sit on or put your luggage on. I would expect to see a fridge and a TV in the room from a 4 star hotel but none was available. The hotel doesn't have a beach and it is impossible to swim near Mnarani. During low tides the sea almost disappears and during high tides it becomes dangerous to swim because of the high waves and the rocks. When I was there, the hotel was almost empty. I could only see around 10-15 customers around but the hotel didn't let me check out late and I think that a check-out time of 10 AM is very early. However, they let me use the swimming pool and the showers until my flight time. So, I don't have a big complaint about it.
