A clean hotel with friendly staff (but they don't overdo it). The room is exactly what we expected: a room with beds, a small table and a TV. Not even a mini bar (which is a plus). The location is quiet enough to sleep, but only a few blocks away from subways and entertainment. The room was CLEAN and maintained daily. The shared bathroom was always CLEAN. The view of the Empire State Building from our room was COOL! Would definitely recommend this hotel for everybody who wants to use their money in the best possible way.
The heating is really hot. For some people, that might be a good thing, but for us it wasn't. Could be easily amended by opening a window.
Value. Convenient location close to subway. Room was as described. Hotel has old world charm. Courteous staff.
Location and friendly staff
It's location and price are really good. The cleaning staff does an outstanding job!!!
My goodness, the heating had me opening the door in the middle of the night and the window the next night (I figured might be best for privacy and safety purposes). You will NOT get cold in this building.
Excellent location, quiet and calm, good value. Lots of dimmable lighting and comfortable bed.
No tea or coffee making facilities. Hottest room I have ever stayed in! With temperatures outside below freezing I had to leave window open all night to be comfortable. TV in first room had no plug.
The hotel itself is a very beautiful hotel hidden away on 31st Street, right near the Empire State Building. You can tell that the staff works hard to keep it looking new and working just fine.
The only negative is that the bed itself was very, very firm, to the point that I sometimes had trouble sleeping. They seem to anticipate this and provide an extra pillow, which came in useful on those times where sleep was elusive.
Location, location, location Close to subway, Empire State Building Good restaurants nearby (especially Indian) comfortable bed working wi-fi clean shared bathrooms friendly staff
Best location close to 5th ave shops
Very clean, quiet and comfy rooms
Convenient to Penn Station Very clean Good sized room Comfortable bed Polite staff
Wifi wasn't working for me in the room
Excellent location, ideal for exploring on foot and via the Subway
Walls are a wee bit thin, but nothing I couldn't cope with
This was my 5th or 6th time at this hotel and I've never had a bad experience. The hotel is well located and a min away from a subway station. The rooms and bathrooms are always clean and the place is quiet. Great value for money.
This was my first time staying during the winter and I found that the radiator made a hissing sound when it needed to vent steam. The staff was helpful, they turned the heat off and gave me extra blankets (which I ended up not needing because the room retained enough warmth).
Great value and location. Small rooms, but well appointed and clean. The idea of separate bathrooms was not inviting but it was non-issue. There are two per floor and they were cleaned often. If you are on a budget the Hotel 31 should top your list.
Bed/pillows are not great. There is central heating with no individual control so the rooms were hot. The only way to moderate the temperature was by opening the window. During my stay that brought cold wind and rain into the room.

Elevator Room cuteness
"Clickingish" noise from heater, plumbing
Location, staff, room, price. For what you're paying in this area it's good. Shared bathrooms are fine, never had to wait and are clean.
Noise, take your earplugs, thin walls and doors and inconsiderate other travellers mean you may not sleep otherwise!
Overall it was a good stay. The room was tiny but very cleaned and wifi very good. Shared bathrooms very cleaned too.
The hotel was very well located and the room was very clean!
There was a very noisy pipe in our room, we couldn't sleep with the water leaking every hour! the staff was not very friendly...but still they've never refused any favour to us.
proximity to midtown
rooms were small. I was lucky. I didn't have to share a bathroom. but many people had to share a bathroom.
I was in town just for one night for some theater, so I didn't spend much time in the hotel but it was clean, quiet, and the staff was helpful.
This is a good hotel for a short trip to Manhattan, relatively inexpensive. You can get a room with a private bathroom for a good price.
I did not like the interior, but it is rather personal preference.
Excellent pricing for a well situated boutique hotel
A great value for the money, very friendly staff.
WiFi not working.
I just came back from a 5-night stay at Hotel 31 and couldn't have been more happy. As an extensive traveler, both staying in hostels, mid-range, and 5-star hotels, I was impressed with the comfort and value for my money of Hotel 31. If you are in New York to see the sights, as many travellers are, you'll be spending much of your time exploring the city only to come back to your room in the evening. While nothing fancy, this hotel provided the perfect nights sleep. My room included the shared washroom which was surprisingly clean at all hours of the day despite a full floor of visitors. I will certainly be back to stay during my next visit to NYC.
