We loved feeling like residents instead of guests. The elevator and long hallways, even the shared bathrooms, made our stay comfy and homey.
We didn't care for the smell of the air freshener. It was rather strong and unappealing.
The room was very nice, I had no problems during my stay, the staff were courteous.
The staff did seem somewhat wary, but that may have been because I had attempted to speak to them about politics. And I prefer to be downtown, which I know better, although there was a good grocery shop very close to the hotel, a restaurant next door, and an internet cafe around the corner.
The hotel was a block away from the nearest Subway, and 4 blocks away from the Empire State Building.
Having to share a bathroom with other people, like a dorm room, was a disappointment.
Really fast WiFi Really good location Really good decoration
Everything is good
That the bathrooms were always clean There are basins in the room which frees up bathrooms and is convenient Easy location to get to sites and subway
Very good location to visit NY. Nice and friendly staff
Rooms like a Hopper painting. Comfortable feeling with an old New York touch. Great place for the price
No Lavatory in the Bedrooms
Nice guy at the reception desk , free wifi , clean room
Shared bathroom but clean one, small room.
Great location near subway. Not far from Times Square, Macy's. Easy access to downtown destinations. Clean, quiet and safe place to rest.
Most rooms have a shared bathroom. There are two per floor. Small and kept clean. If both are occupied just walk up or down a level to find an open one.
Don't let the small rooms or communal bathrooms scare you. Incredible place for the money in a good location
Brilliant location, especially for the price. You can walk or, like we did, rent the Citibikes for $10 a day and see everything. The shared bathroom was immaculate, and much better than anticipated. We spent the vast amount of our time out in the city - so this was perfect. Much cheaper than other Manhattan alternatives. No problem with left luggage or anything else we asked for.
Room wasn't huge - but then I expected that - it was clear on the description. Others have mentioned the lift - yes it's small, but it's in keeping with the style of building, and wasn't a problem for us. Air conditioning was noisy, so we had it on for short bursts.
place, clean hotel (especially bathroom cleaned several times a day)
any wardrobe in our room, too little space for placing clothes
Great location of the hotel, nice and clean rooms and bathrooms, even the shared bathrooms.
staff, cleanliness and location
Hotel 31 is in an excellent location, two blocks from 33rd St subway station. There is a 24 hour deli/conv store down the block, an excellent italian pizza place, and Brother Jimmy's BBQ. The room was neat and clean, a bit outdated, but well appointed with a flat screen TV and sink. The shared bathroom was right next to my room and was always available. I am a bit of an OCD clean freak, and I usually shy away from shared baths. It was constantly clean! I rarely even saw the cleaning people, they were that inconspicuous. The owner and his son (I'm guessing) at the front desk are helpful, but not overly friendly. As a single man, I can tell you the area is full of young urban professionals from my experience. Hot water was abundant and the A/C (window unit) was ice cold - Excellent! Overall a good value for the price.
The hotel is good walking distance to the Empire State which makes it easy to connect with other tourist attractions. Lots of character that has been well maintained. It had two bathrooms per floor so we never waited to use the facilities.
The bed was quite small and cab drivers are not sure of it's location.
The value is fantastic! Can't wait to stay here again!
One elevator lift that was very slow!
Nice for the price. Great location. Good clening. Shared bathroom was not an issue at all.
Tiny spaces (such as elevators and bathroom). Front desk people not always kind.
Location is perfect. Metro very close. View of the Empire State building. TV, sink and air conditioner was in the room. Window can be opened for a fresh air wihich is a hudge plus comparing to other hotels in US.
Old furniture. Thin walls, you can hear your neibhours.
The location is great, the rooms are simple but everything is really clean. Staff was very friendly.
Great location, Staff went the extra mile to help us. It was very good.
I liked everything. It was exactly what we were looking for
The location was great, just a couple blocks from the Empire State building which was a pick up point for the bus tours so very convenient
The rooms are old - which I expected from previous reviews but they felt kinda dirty with the wall paper peeling and old old carpeting. This is not a complaint really, just keeping it real. The price for this room was a bit much.
My daughter and I stayed one night for NYU college visit. We wish that it had been longer. Loved the way that the hotel is restored and decorated. It felt like we have traveled back in time. Besides being very lovely it is also clean. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. We had arrived to New York 8am by greyhound; so went to see if the hotel would hold our luggage until check in. Not only did the very nice man let us check in when we got there, but for a small increase, we also got a room upgrade, from a one queen with shared bathroom, to a 2 double bed, with private bathroom. Very, Very nice.
The fact that we had to leave so soon.
