I wouldn't bring a family here. The hotel seems to cater to single or young people who tend to be up late. There is a very active bar downstairs that plays live music long into the night, even on weekdays. You don't hear it so much on the third floor, but on the second floor it's quite noisy. GET A ROOM WITH A PRIVATE BATH. Pay the extra $20 for your own shower and toilet, as the ones "down the hall"... I'll just say they are heavily used and often not very clean, particularly by evening, although they are cleaned each morning. Many of the windows look out at a vacant lot full of trash, or brick walls. Mine looked out at three porta-potties sitting on the back deck, just a few feet away.
The Alaskan is located in the middle of downtown Juneau, in the old part of town, so you can walk just about anywhere yet be out of the "cruise ship" crowd just down the street. This is a very old building, and most of the furnishings are similar in age, and I enjoyed that authenticity. My mattress was actually very comfortable, with a clean white comforter cover and sheets. There were nice toiletries provided and clean white towels.
For the solo traveler trying to save money for doing other things, this is a good place to get some sleep and a nice warm shower, and there's great coffee just across the street at 7 am. But, it is not a place you'd go to to relax and enjoy peace and quiet, or lovely views.
