Home to one of America’s icons – the Golden Gate Bridge – San Francisco is a liberal city where life is very much for the living.
Surrounded by water on 3 sides, the city's spread over steep hills that make for great photo ops. And none better than the zig-zag Lombard Street, seen in many a film. Even more famous are San Fran's iconic trolleys climbing the hills – a little touristy, but still worth a ride.
In the middle of the bay, Alcatraz island is known for the notorious criminals once imprisoned there. Even if you don’t go inside, the views of the bridge and city are unparalleled.
Nowhere is life in San Francisco more laid-back than on the Pacific beaches. Rent a bike and head out there, passing through the huge Golden Gate Park, before returning to sample some fresh seafood at Fisherman’s Wharf. Don't miss the clam chowder served in bread bowls! Chinatown also has a great selection of mid-range restaurants.
As you fly into San Francisco Airport, look out for the exclusive homes lining the Bay Area. Whether you want a more independent stay in apartments, luxury San Francisco hotels or cheap hostels, Booking.com has something for everyone. Be careful though – you might just leave your heart here!
The hotel itself was very nice. The parking situation on the other hand was terrible. We were in line for valet parking an additional hour. Because of the parking, I will definitely think twice before staying at this hotel.

There's so much history and beautiful scenery and architecture. In a week we touched on the high point places to see and visit, but it's just scratching the surface.
Incredible dining, easy to get around for an urban city.
Down side, some places were a bit dirty, and it is expensive.

A lovely city, San Francisco has the lot!
A lovely city, San Francisco has the lot! It's always sad to see the homelessness and rampant drug addiction in the Tenderloin and right down to Market St in some places. In most cases you are left alone, however travelling as a single female I can imagine it's intimidating. Try to avoid that area, everywhere else seems fine and safe as any big city. If you have a spare day for touristic activities highly recommend the SF Bay ferry system - can use them to get to the USS Hornet Aircraft Carrier Museum! Neat!!

Loved San Fran, have to admit was a bit apprehensive having read some of the comments and social media however we felt safe at all times. We stayed in Fisherman's Wharf, frequented pier 39 several times, rode the railcar, enjoyed the night life and walked through China Town. Also took the ferry to Alcatraz which was enjoyable. Look there are homeless people around, but that's true now in nearly every major city. We didn't visit the city extensively but the 3 days we were there and the places we visited were very enjoyable. Thought the driverless cab was hilarious. People-friendly, prices-usual city surcharge, weather in march-bright and dry. Fab hotdogs from the stalls along the Wharf. Lots more we could have done so plenty to fill a 4/5 day trip.

Hayes Valley is a fun, beautiful area in San Francisco.
Hayes Valley is a fun, beautiful area in San Francisco. It’s a great area to stay to visit SF Jazz, SF Opera, the Asian Art Museum and so much more. The restaurants and shopping are varied and often pretty memorable, making you want to return. Walking around the neighborhood, you’ll find a few nice parks full of people just enjoying their day.
The location of the be Handlery Union Square Hotel is fantastic. This is the first time I have visited San Francisco before and the prime location made getting around the city so much easier. Upon arrival in the morning, our room was ready and they happily accommodated us by letting us check in well before check in time.
The staff were helpful and friendly, we were lucky enough to get a room upgrade and a goodie bag to make our stay even more special as we were celebrating our anniversary. Overall a great trip and I would stay here again.
Hotel Nikko is conveniently located near Union Square, making it an easy place from which to launch sightseeing, shopping and dining excursions. We loved the sumptuous bedding and elegant bath accessories. We also loved the thoughtfulness in providing half and half in their minibar for early morning or late night cups of coffee from the Keurig machine. But best of all were the staff at this hotel. Time and time again, we were treated with extra mile service, warmth and good natured kindness. Wow! We will gladly return.
Room was a good size, and had a large walk-in closet. The bathroom was extremely clean and well-stacked with toiletries. There was an extendable clothesline which unfortunately didn't work. The location is excellent, just off Union Square, on cable car lines and near the metro, so very handy for getting around. The parking is just up the block, and reasonably priced compared to other San Francisco options. There was coffee, filtered water, and cookies available in the lobby.
The location a block from Union Square was ideal. The Curan theatre is across that street and Grace Cathedral is up the hill. The Warrick provides a good value for the area, where many rooms are in the $500 range. This may seem superfluous, but the in-room HVAC unit was quiet enough to sleep. So often those units are so loud, that one has to choose to be comfortable or sleep.
Maybe the best part is the Tapas restaurant on the main floor. Bota was fantastic.
This charming old style hotel has it all! My lovely room was spacious and comfortable with a kitchenette area including microwave, fridge and sink. There was a walk-in wardrobe, with iron and ironing-board. A self-serve continental breakfast is included and is served in a dining room downstairs. The location is great: close to Union square and cable cars. The staff are helpful, friendly and very knowledgeable about local attractions, transport etc.
The room was roomy enough, had a comfortable bed, nice shower amenities and the location of the hotel is great! Close to Union Square, lots of good restaurants (Matador - Mexican, Pinecrest - 24hr diner) and bars (John Foley's, The Irish Bank, Zombie Village). Loved the Beat Generation vibe of the hotel and the cool decorations and quotes around the room, hallways and lobby area. PLUS the attached BlueStone Coffee shop has a great cold brew!
I've stayed at numerous Union Square hotels in the last 15 years and this is by far the best for that budget. Recently renovated, the rooms are bright, quiet, large and with all modern comfort. The lobby and bar area are gorgeous. The 3 elevators ensure you never wait more than 30 seconds to get to or from your room. The staff is helpful and nice, and there is a breakfast restaurant within the building.
Room was spacious and clean and had a good shower. Hotel was in a decent area which was just out of the main area of union square etc. We liked the location as was slightly quieter and for us we could get to union sq and fishermans wharf area in a 20min walk which we dont mind.. Good links to public transport within a few minutes of the hotel. Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful.
In San Francisco downtown, near Union Square. The stuff was very friendly and helping. Bathroom very clean. Sheets were clean but matress was covered in a certain protection that indicates they had issues with bed bugs (we had no problem with). I don't understand why they don't gjve up at that horrible fitted carpet that is so hard to clean and encourages the existance of bed bugs.
The room was big and comfortable and was well lit. The location is right near union square. The breakfast was very good. There is free guest laundry. The hotel itself is very unique as it is also used as a memorial for the marines corps.
The staff were exceptionally nice and helpful. The price was more than reasonable compared to other options in the area.
The hotel is guarded with security guards at the lobby which is safer at night. Reception at 3rd floor with the restaurant and waiting area full with funky and colorful decoration on wall which made it vibrant. Room is clean, comfortable, great view. Location is strategic which is next to union square, BART station and other public transport.
Free quick breakfast and coffee to go. Location is great for the fact Union Square is near by and so many other spots near by the downtown area. Cozy, clean and safe Hostel. I would highly recommend as a traveler for business as myself or leisure. A great way to meet so many people from around the world.
Breakfast was wonderful. The staff was always very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed it everyday. The location is the best! Walking distance to pier 39, to the Baudin bakery, the cable car station, the big bus station and etc. We even walked back from Union Square to China town and then back to the hotel.
Receptionist was great and supportive. Overall facility is a simple one with no frills but is decent for a couple of nights. Rustic touch with interiors which I liked a lot!
Access to key areas like union square or cable car stops which are a very short walk from the hotel! Very good location.
Cute boutique hotel in the heart of Union Square. Very basic hotel, but it has all the necessities. Staff were friendly, it was comfortable, and fairly priced. Not very spacious, but understandably so since it is a historic building in the heart of downtown.
We only stayed at the hotel overnight when coming back to San Francisco the night before our flight. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Good Central location just round from union square at a decent price
We have been coming to Union Square for many years and staying at the Handlery every time. The location is the best! The hotel is nice, clean and the staff are extremely polite!
Close to Union square, parking. Friendly staff and clean. The neighborhood wasn’t the best but definitely nice hotel for the price. I would stay there again!
If you wish to spend more time at the piers a d tourist places this is a great location. Union square has some great hotels but it’s more of a business area.
