Surrounded by large flower gardens, this lodge offers an outdoor pool and serves a daily full raw vegan breakfast from a set menu. Carmel-by-the-Sea is 15 minutes’ drive away.
Score from 69 reviews Very good
Situated on a hillside overlooking Big Sur's beautiful Pacific coastline, this adult-only, California resort is located on 243 secluded acres. It features 2 heated pools adjoined by Japanese hot bath....

The staff were very helpful and welcoming. Travelling in January the big fire in the dining room was lovely to enjoy a coffee after dinner. Room was basic but comfortable.food in the restaurant was good.
Being on the main road it was a bit noisy but we still slept well. Food in the restaurant was a bit expensive.
The muskoka chairs by the river was a nice area to relax in the morning and enjoy the outdoors. location is right on the pacific coast highway. Gas station right next door.
Not the value for the money and we had the best room ???!! No phone , noisy . Smelled Uncomfortable ,sparse is generous door lock was broken and the carpet was filthy ! better room available locally for same $$ with down comforter, fireplace and kitchenettes
Great location. Restaurant and staff were unbelievably great. 5 stars there and that's coming from someone who eats in great NYC restaurants a bunch. Bed was really comfy, my friend and I both noticed. Basic anenities in the room but extremely comfortable and clean. Like camping out since the it's sort of cabin-like and there are no TVs, but there is wifi to check you email (not good for much else+there's no cell signal in the area). Highly recommended if you're staying in the area.
Bed. Tragic noise
I liked the location.
The room was dirty and I was nervous about the cleanliness if bedspreads. I would way rather camp or stay in Monterey.
Very low value for money.
Poor bed room
Like I could check out on my own we left at 3am as it was so bad
The place was old dirty no proper heating thin walls all in all really bad experience and will never stay again.
Breakfast is excellent
-Proximity to Big Sur, since this area is pricey to stay in if not camping, I adjusted my standards. This place is one of the better values in this area, but it is bare bones. -The room was clean, I stayed there several days and the cleaning staff did a good job of cleaning and restocking items.
-Security door chain was missing chain, I requested this be fixed and the first request was ignored, the second request finally addressed the complaint. -When other guests leave their front lights on, it becomes really bright for the other guest rooms as the curtains are thin fabric and don't light block. -Walls are really thin, could hear a normal volume conversation next door, crystal clear. -Insects in the rooms, lots of, but think this is standard for this region, just keep everything zipped up. -A tall step between the sleeping area and bathroom, could be a problem for those whom get up in the middle of the night. -Restaurant packaged my to-go order of a quesadilla with the salsa inside, so the large amount of water from the tomatoes saturated the flour tortilla of the quesadilla, opened the to-go box a couple of minutes after receiving it and the quesadilla was soggy. When I complained to the only attendant in the restaurant, the response was "yes, this has happened before", no offer to remedy the situation, I vowed never to return to the restaurant.
These cabins are too basic for the price. If I had known there were no amenities nearby and no TV in the room (and it gets dark so early in California) I would have booked something in Monterey. The room was okay, but the restaurant is a complete rip-off. Average food, high prices.
Clean comfortable rooms but on the road, not the river.
We were not expecting a room on the road. Ad could say lower prices not on the river.
I was pretty disappointed. The room was bare bones. Bathroom had no shelving to put your stuff on. The shower head was awful. There wasn't an outlet in the bathroom. No menus of there restaurant or any other eating establishments. Not even a full sized mirror. It could have been so much better if the proprietors showed and kind of love to that room. All I can say is location, location, location. And they know it.
Hotel and location were perfect! Directly off hwy 1 and very close to trails.
The restaurant waiters weren't very good. We were sitting 10 minutes before we had someone talk to us. But the bus boys were wonderful and made up for the waiters. That is the only complaint we had. The food was very good too! I'd stay again for sure!
Make sure that you rent the suites on the river side, and I think you'll be happy with your stay. Nice view of the river. You, also might want to consider the week days over the week ends, less people around.
A great place in the forests of Big Sur. The rooms are comfortable and cozy. The restaurant services delicious food.
It is not cheap but compared to the prices at some other types of accommodation at Big Sur it is still a good deal.
The location is lovely by the river, but the pacific coast weather influence meant that we were in cloud for most of the day.
It is very remote. There was no fridge or television in the room - which made life very expensive in travelling which most people are when they are staying in the Big Sur. The restaurant was also very expensive. As a consequence we spent most of our time in Carmel - which rather defeated the object of staying the in Big Sur. But I would recommend to others to stay in Carmel
Lovely location in the middle of the big sur area close to the river. Gave us a nice rest coming from san francisco. The room was cabin-style and had a nice little veranda to sit. There is a store on the property where you can buy cheap(er) dinner and breakfast.
The girl who was doing our check in was studying when we came in and we felt like bothering her.
Being just by the river, rustic accommodation, very relaxed
pretty pricey for what you get, they could throw in breakfast to make it better value - even if from a limited menu
Value of smaller rooms across street.
The restaurant's food!!!! Exelent pastas..,
Restaurant closes at 9pm and open at 8am!!!!
Loud by the loud road. Linens seems a bit dirty.
good food at the restaurant... nice seats on the river... very accessible to the petrol station and restaurant... unfortunately... because it was sooo close to highway one... you can hear all the vehicles passing through! thank god no one had to honk their horn!
no television, no airconditioning, the heater was too scary to be left on all night as i noticed it emitting sparks during the night, radio wasn't working either
The location was staggeringly beautiful. The accommodations were small but very homely and very clean. The food was the best we had all trip (throughout California and the South!).
As a city slicker, I would have felt safer with a stronger lock on the cabin door but that is about all I would change!
