This San Francisco hotel features an on-site restaurant and warmly decorated rooms with a 42-inch flat-screen TV and a CD player. The Golden Gate Bridge is just 6 miles away.
Score from 1189 reviews Very good
This downtown San Francisco hotel is 1 block from Union Square and the Hallidie Plaza, which features a cable car stop. The hotel offers massage services and a tour desk.
Score from 1960 reviews Very good
Located adjacent to a cable car stop and 8 minutes’ walk from Union Square, this elegant hotel features free Wi-Fi and a fitness centre. The Ferry Building is 15 minutes’ tram ride away.
Score from 606 reviews Very good
Named on the National Register of Historic Places, this hotel offers Victorian charm combined with modern amenities and is located a short stroll from area attractions, including cable car lines.
Score from 1661 reviews Good
Very comfortable bed. Extremely nice toiletries. Proximity to BART and major bus routes.
WiFi cost was too high to consider using. The area was central but a little strange and dark at night.
Great bar, great interiors
Gym too small, rooms small and hard to navigate. Couldn't find the temperature control panel
It's not the old Clift but what you see upon entering the hotel is a new concept of class and San Francisco's historic beauty with the still intact Redwood Room and superb staff that makes you feel royal.
The location is fabulous. Less than a five minute walk from Union Square, surrounded by plenty of restaurants and shops. Staff were professional and helpful. Modern décor.
There's free wifi in the lobby but you have to pay if you want access to it in your room which seems petty. There was fairly prominent graffiti on the back of the bathroom door which had not been removed.
Lobby & Staff Rooms were very clean
No ice machine, industrial toilet, no drawers, no top sheet for bed.
The hotel was located in the up and coming tenderloin district, close to union square and in an excellent walking area. The room was bright, the windows were big and the view from the room was absolutely spectacular. The door staff were very friendly and extremely helpful with directions (more so than the Concierge). Quiet Room, good Air Conditioning.
Staff were in their own world, the room was filthy, never have I ever had long hair and there were long hairs in the bath tub, the towels (yes, in the towels) and the shower/tub combo didn't drain properly. The bed couldn't have been more uncomfortable, although beautifully made. I called the front desk for more towels, the person stocked my room with 1 single replacement towel. When they came up to try and fix the slow drain, they placed a card on the vanity explaining that it was resolved, but at this point you can guess that it wasn't resolved. Waking up on Friday morning and going out for a starbucks coffee across the street, a homeless man was "peeing" beside the planter out the side door. The bar charged the tab from the table next to us for their drinks and all in all, this was probably the worst hotel experience I have ever had.
An excellent location, very friendly and understanding staff. sensation of security and protection
awful coffee served in the lobby in the mornings for free. The room is full of un-necssary and unused furniture, yet there is no place to sit down or hang your clothes properly
Staff and location
Modern furnishings forced you to live out of suitcase and very unattractive. Bar and restaraunt closed for private party one night. Too expensive for degree of luxury.
The position near the Union Square in the city center
There is nothing to say about
Value for money & clean. We got upgraded to a Junior Suite which was quite big.
Badly planned bathroom. The door wouldn't close without hitting pot, the shower wouldn't drain so we had to bathe in knee deep water, there's no way 2 people could fit in one bathroom. Considering it was a junior suite, it should have been bigger with better fittings!
The concierge could not have been less helpful... Really dampened the experience. The basic rooms are tiny and my minibar was never filled.
Exterior look and lobby Rooms are large
The rooms need renovation, the interlinking door made me hear every word of the party people next door, I could not sleep at all, Bad experience after paying to high price
We loved the spacious room.
-Overall Design -Size of room -Bathroom products -Concierge
To pay on top for wifi, work on the balcony of the room (deluxe king size), no kettle in the room.
I stayed at the Clift for two nights in which I had experienced a number of unfortunate events. To begin with, the reception staff were not warm and welcoming AT ALL!!! They knew we were tourists and did not offer to give us a city guide or a map, they didn't even ask, very poor attitude. Secondly, the car park is a major issue at the hotel since they charge you $59 for overnight parking. I've never stayed at a hotel were I had to pay this insane amount especially that I'm a hotel guest. When we checked out, my friend and I realized that we could've basically stayed at a 5 star hotel with the difference of parking money; I thought it was a complete hidden cost scam. The bathtub is very dirty and there was a major draining/leaking issue, when we informed the reception upon check out, all she said was "oh, thank you for letting us know, I'll send an engineer to take a look". A respectable hotel would compensate one way or another, not this one. We paid exactly what we would've have paid at the W or Westing which is just across the street and much nicer. BAD BAD BAD experience
Excellent hotel, awesome rooms, great staff, and great location!!! Everything was perfect.
Great location in the heart of San Francisco, easy access by BART. Spacious and clean rooms.
There is "style over substance" feeling. The building is an old one and despite some modern touches feels worn out.
Great bed linens.
Hotel is too dark, and hallways are quite drab and depressing. In their attempt to be upscale chic, they list identity.
In the center of city.
The bath was old and small
We like the location as it is very easy to get anywhere. The staff are very helpful when one arrives and needs to unload baggage from car. Suggested we take their town car to the airport… very comfortable and only $5 more than going taxi rate. Rooms and beds are very comfortable.
Staff was great! They have security at elevators so that only guests can go up to the rooms. They don't allow panhandlers to loiter around the hotel.
Didn't like the bar table fee $350 was a bit much especially guests staying at the hotel.
It was my first time going to San Francisco and I wasn't sure where to stay. I looked at the reviews for Clift and booked it based on the positive feedback. The location was excellent and the room was wonderful. We booked a standard room and ended up getting upgraded to a junior suite for our 5 night stay. The staff was also very friendly. The room was spacious and beautiful. Just an FYI, this hotel is also quite hip with lots going on at night if you want to pop down to the bar for a drink, but we couldn't hear anything from our room, so it was a great balance.
The bathrooms are little dated, but then again, if they were nicer, I'm sure this room wouldn't have been affordable. They're still very clean, however, and perfectly functional.
