we stayed twice once at the beginning of our trip once at the end. Both rooms were large, clean great view and reasonable equipped. Staff were extremely friendly and polite. The fact that we were not told about the $150 per night insurance pre authorisation, so the cost of the last 3 nights stay, $575 plus Tax and city tax, plus the $450 Plus a random miscellaneous amount was added up to and taken off our card without knowledge for $1383. This completely depleted our funds and resulting in being refused payment in a restaurant, baseball tickets declined payment, several expensive calls to the UK from a mobile whilst out, to confirm why we had no money in our account, then several calls from the hotel phone to get the situation resolved, the latter at the hotels expense, however for a period of 30 hours our holiday fund was $0.00. This situation was eventually resolved however it ruined the last 3 days of our holiday. This could of been avoided if the hotel and booking.com was to warn people this was going to happen and the communication was better. The staff could not be faulted in them trying to help resolve the situation as quickly as possible. Also the hotel is only one block away from the bad area of san fran and i think visitors should be warned of this as unaware travellers could venture into the tenderlion area as we nearly did. The manager Ursula, was very helpful and bent over backwards to help us, she covered the cost of our calls and paid for our baseball tickets and needs praise for her help but this could all have been avoided if booking.com and reception would have explain these extra costs at check in or booking.

Cool atmosphere. Extremely small bathrooms and it's impossible to sit down on the toilet due to the close proximity of the sink.

The decor, curtains and lighting in the room as well as in the lobby and hallways. Walls are too thin. I could hear the person below coughing and flushing the toilet and the people next door laughing and their TV. Also, it would have been nice to have a coffee/tea pot in the room.

Nice bath products, fluffy towels I'm not a fan of the trend toward very dark hotel public spaces, where you have to stumble around to find an elevator. But the elevators were even darker, so dark that when they opened they were invisible! Plus one of them was lit dimly with a ghastly hue of green, it really was like being in a horror house. It was just awful. I can just see the designer having a good laugh at guests' expense--and the hotel'S. Silly decor. Our room was a basic king that had been decorated on the cheap: Ikea is nicer. Surface glance, looked nice but don't look too deeply. The bathroom was so small if you sat on the commode you couldn't close the door without amputating your knees. Plus I cut my finger on the cheap metal door jamb. But only one washcloth. ?? I could excuse overnight parking of $50 if the room had been something special, but really, that's gouging. I enjoy understatement as much as the next person, but other than a goldish plaque on the wall, you couldn't find the Clift in daylght. I guess if you don't know where it is you don't belong. Finally: got in at 11:30 and was vetted at the door--maybe because the bar was rocking? Ridiculous. We called room service for dessert. 'We don't serve dessert after 11pm" What? What fine hotel (or any hotel with room service at all, for that matter) doesn't recognize that people coming home later in the evening might want a sweet nibble? A two or three star masquerading as something better. We stay overnight in SF several times a month and this is one place we'll avoid. UGH.

Central location, bedding was very comfortable and the staff was very friendly. It was my husbands birthday so she wanted to give us an upgrade on the room but all rooms were booked so she gave us two complimentary drinks. The tub filled up with water white I was showering.

Very friendly and accommodating staff. The room to which we were moved was spacious and comfortable. We were initially on the 3d floor and the sound of the club in lobby was disturbing. I would suggest that you lodge only 'party-goers' on the lower floors!

I lived the quote in the pillow - nice touch. I liked the toiletries and big soft towels. The bed was comfy. The service was great. For the price, the room is a little beat up. It's well designed but lacks the glitter that you expect based on the price and the lobby. I had a more enjoyable and personalized stay at the Monaco on the next block just two weeks earlier. Rooms were beaten up. You can tell they were really nice 5-7 years ago but it looks worn. Other than that it was a lovely stay.

Actually it was my second experience at Clift, the most valuable thing about this hotel, is their managing staff who really care a lot about their customers. There was nothing to dislike at this time.

we had a great corner room, light and spacious. The position of the hotel is superb - you can walk to almost anywhere Too many extras - breakfast, wifi, parking. Breakfast was very ordinary, tea was undrinkable, had to ask for two bags per cup and even then it was not good enough. Given up on their tea and breakfast after 2 days and went to a local Starbucks for a great cup of tea and a muffin. There was no free wifi and only 3 divises per room - we had to pay 2 wifi fees per day as there were 4 of us. On arrival both rooms had no gowns and the toiletries were left over from the previous guests!!! Never had this before....

Would not return. The bathroom was the size of a small closet, the carpeting in the room was pulling up, old and tired. Parking was overpriced--even for San Francisco

staff were very helpful- Andrea! bed very comfortable, liked the duvet there was inadequate space to unpack suitcase. That is OK for a 1-2 night stay. Not so for 5 nights. Suggest you provide a smaller table and more storage.

This is one of the coolest hotels in San Francisco. The vibe in the Redwood Bar on a Saturday night is equal to some of the best in the world. The restaurant used to be outstanding when it was Asia de Cuba. Now its just good.
