The location, excellent for exploring New York. The garden, which was unexpected. If you want to experience Harlem, as it is, this is the apartment for you. If you want finesse and luxury, it definitely isn't. Valerie, the owner, is a mine of information regarding the surrounding area and is obviously passionate about her home. There are many good places to eat very nearby, Amy Ruth's for fried chicken and waffles with syrup, for breakfast, YUM ! We three ladies, travelled on the subway, which was a great experience, although we were not out late at night we felt safe and the apartment is very well secured with iron grilles and iron doors. We enjoyed our stay, we got what we paid for and that is fine.
This property desperately needs some TLC although the original features remain, they are pretty shabby; the original wood work shows its age woefully. The cleanliness is debatable the beds, kitchen and bathroom are clean to use, but the windows, corners of the rooms and bottom of cupboards are dirty. The basement apartment that we shared was very dark and gloomy; the television is difficult to use. We got thoroughly told off for accidentally. leaving the garden light on all night Take a torch, getting in in the dark is difficult, the entrance and hallway are impossibly dark. This would be such a nice apartment if it had some money spent on it to brighten it and tidy it up.
We had the mid-basement apartment. I knew we would have view on the inner garden, I did not know it would be ours! We were there in August and enjoyed breakfast and dinner outside every day. The kitchen was fully equipped, complete with chef's knives and spatulas (almost always missing in extended stays). It was fun going through cabinets to find all kinds of useful seasonings we did not have to buy and comforting to know that whatever we left behind would be of use to the next family. The pride and love the owner (Valerie - take some time to chat with her) has for her ethnicity and for Harlem was present in the apartment.
This is more of a tip. With hard core Europeans among us, we toughed it out without air conditioning, in August. The window units were too noisy for most of us to be able to sleep with them running. While we were lucky with the weather, the first night was still tough. For our second night, we discovered that we could get a very nice draft to cool the apartment at night by opening the door that gives on the garden in the back. With tall fences surrounding the inner garden, it seemed safe enough and we had no problems. The wifi was weak and only worked in one place in the apartment, where the couch was.
