Valerie is such a nice lady. The decoration of the house is very nice.
The heater is really noisy
Valerie was an excellent host during my time in Harlem, with great knowledge of the area and it's history. Beds were very comfortable and even has a kitchen to store your own food or do cooking. Thanks again to Valerie for making my time most enjoyable.
Great location! Easy to access public transport and get around New York. Comfy bed and very clean. While the bathroom was shared this was clear beforehand and never an issue. I would definitely stay again, whether I was travelling alone or with a friend.
Very well welcomed at Valerie place, in a cozy Harlem house. Great if you want to feel to be at a warm place rather than a hotel. Localization is in Harlem, therefore, not in the crowded city center, but in less than 5 min you get to the subway or bus directly to anywhere in NY. Tip: Metrocard unlimited (we got one for 7 days) is well worth it, from anywhere in NYC, not only if you stay in Harlem.
Remember this is a Guest House, not a Hotel, and not even a Hostel. As so, just to be clear that you will share common areas like if you rent a room in someone's house, and not in a professional runned place (reception, full time cleaning, etc...). This is not negative, but we think is good to let it clear to your stay fully match your expectation, and for sure you will not be let down for the warm welcome by Valerie.
The price, the location, the possibility of doing our own cooking, the easy access to the subway, the beautiful house
My single bedroom was very small, with no desk, no room to put my suitcase. The walls were very thin and we could hear everything from the other rooms and the corridors (creeking floorboards). My bedroom was not suitable for a business trip, I had to work on my bed, eat on my bed (no table, even in the kitchen), no mirror to get dressed before my appointments, not even in the bathroon (except a small one too high even to check one's make up). The dusty shutters did not shut, the window did not open to let some air in sometimes.
Thank you Valerie. Warm welcome & hospitality, comfortable and well-kept rooms. Valerie helped us with many things. Lost luggage, Tipps for NYC, ..... The Place to stay in NYC. Nice and Save neighbourhood with walking distance to the subway. We would be happy to stay again.
The authentic feel of Harlem and a very knowledgeable and congenial host. Well located for exploring New York as a whole with good underground connections locally and superb eating places.
The stairs, but outweighed by the true feel of the property
She was awesome the entire trip. I will be rebooking in the future in my travels to NY.
We were extremely pleased with the property. Valerie was a great hostess. We were the only guests during our stay and we appreciated the privacy that afforded. It was convenient to be able to park the car and walk or take the trains to specific events. The property is conveniently located to the major attractions in Harlem.
If there had been other guests during our stay it would not have been as pleasant due to having to share the bathroom and kitchen.
Val was so welcoming and the location was excellent. Room was clean and comfortable.
Good Price and close to red Line subway
Harlem and sharing restroom
I loved Valerie's attitude. She was very helpful and has a gorgeous home. I would stay here anytime that I am in New York City. It's a great place if you want to be close to all that Harlem has to offer.
Valerie was fantastic
Everything was great!!
The woman in charge was sweet and attentive
The good news was thaty plans changed and I had to be in Long Island so I only stayed there one night. I walked in and the there was a bad smell not sure of what but if wasn't pleasant. The room itself was small the rug under the bed was old a very dirty ! The bed uncomfortable, pillow uncomfortable.will not stay there again !
Staying in a house with character without TV and trappings of a cookie cutter hotel. It felt like I had the whole house to myself. I heard others but never ran into anyone. Val the Proprietor is an Angel and was very helpful in helping me navigate the area.
I couldn't stay longer.
Big privat rooms in quiet area of NY. Location next to public transportation.
Name of the Hostel is not indicated on the door. Difficult to find right place.
Wouldn't know because the day before my arrival I received an email from the owner switching me to another property which was far not nearly as nice as the 144 Harlem house appeared online. Very disappointed and upset with Valerie for not giving me any advance notice so that I could have chosen my own replacement. The substitute was very poor quality.
