What we liked was the location, the view over Central Park and the soft bed we made love in each night. The room was just great; big and clean. An ideal place to visit Manhatten from as there are numerous subways in the neighbourhood and most areas are walking distance. The staff did not greet every customer the same way, they only greeted well dressed customers who gave tips. Us, as students, they did not care to greet. Another minor thing was that the window could not close completely so cold air was coming through but they fixed that.

Location Was told I had a park view when I checked in (I paid the extra for this) and when I got to my room it was a city view without even a partial park view. I went back downstairs to the same person and they merely said, that the park view was not available and this was as good as she could do. Never mentioned anything about being sorry for having told me for $x I could have a park view and never mentioned anything about being sorry for my hassle. Very bad impression.

location. near train station. near central par. near shopping area-5th ave. near broadway! great view @ coffee shop, look forward to breakfast everyday, very friendly staff there, especially martin, olmes and angel.. felt like goin to the family dinning room daily.. hotel could use some renovation.. generally, rooms and shower, beds could be changed.. u can charge high but you should at least make your rooms at par.. thank you for hearing us out and upgrading us to better rooms .. management is flexible that way! altho, we have rooms booked really early, was disappointed initially.. rooms are old.. its not worth the price you charge.. but bec of location and service of staff.. it kind of balance it out.

Location One of the worst hotel experiences I have had. The place is old and dirty. It needs to be refurbished. They still have smoking floors; at least it fits the 80's atmosphere. The air conditioning did not work, the furniture is old, dirty and there is no way I would ever sit down on one of those chairs. Even the bathrobes are so old that I hesitated to wear them (of course I did not). Do not be fooled. For this price, there are better options. Much better. Also, make sure that you leave enough time to check in-out. The place is always packed.

Big rooms with excellent location. Lack of conveniences in the room such as microwave and coffee machine. The hotel still has smoking rooms so you might feel some smell.

Location can't be beat. Nice to have mini-refrigerators in the rooms. The hotel is a bit beat up. There is limited restaurant service, although certainly many options in the immediate area. When we checked in, the reception tried to argue that the room listed as a double with a park view meant a room with only a double bed when both the Helmsley site and the booking, com site clearly stated that we had reserved a room with two beds. This was frustrating. We argued back and forth and they found a room for us with two beds as we had reserved, insisting that we were "lucky" because this was the last room of its kind. I have no reason to believe that this was true--the hotel did not seem especially busy and I felt that the front desk was being deliberately difficult. The robes in the room were scruffy, with hanging threads and grey from repeated washings, however, they were replaced at our request with new ones. Maid service was erratic--some days had beds made in the morning and turned down at night; some days had no night service, one day our room seemed to have been missed altogether. Newspapers were at our door twice but not on other days, although they were available in the lobby. Having said this, the price was right, the location terrific, and the sheets (except for one day) clean.

This hotel is a great older property with a phenomenal location. It is ideal for discovering NYC or indulging in an old world experience without being overwhelmed by service. While the hotel could benefit from a refurbishment, rooms are comfortable, the bar has a great feel, and the food is pretty good. The overall feel is one of understated, slightly old fashioned comfort. Not everyone's cup of tea. Our room had a park view, and that was simply fantastic. It could benefit from some fresh paint on doors and some fittings. The bathrooms need some TLC, but the upside of this is that it gives a great 1970s feel. It is all a matter of tastes.

I booked the cheapest room which cost $500 per night (incl. tax). At this price I was completely shocked that WiFi was not included in the price! That really is lame! Furthermore, the room had an automatic mini-bar apparatus. If you remove any item for more than 20 seconds, you get automatically. Quite ingenious but pathetic!! I would expect such a contraption in some low-class cheap hotel but not in a $500 hotel which is supposed to be 4 star.

Location. The mini bar charges you if you touch an item! The hotel DOUBLE BILLED for our room, and we are now dealing with them to straighten out the problem.

The rooms are big, comfortable chairs, the bed was very comfortable. Great location across the street from Central Park and within walking distance to the theater district. Beautiful decor. Charges were added to our bill, and also to our friends bill, for the mini bar which we had never used, Fortunately we checked our bill and the charges were taken off but I wonder how often that happens.

The location was fantastic, just right. The room was spacious and had the most comfortable bed ever. Everything was extra cost, no breakfast or tea/coffee facilities. Room was a bit jaded in decoration, could have upgraded for $75 dollars a night, which was far too expensive.

Fantastic location, great character and superb concierge (who I think was called Anthony). Perfect for a city break. A 4* hotel should really have a safe in the room.

Excellent location. We booked the room with the view on the park which was worth the extra money. The room wasn't ready after check-in time and we had to wait for half an hour (which isn't that bad with good restaurants and a nice park near). We booked a deluxe double room which should have had 2 separate beds. We got a deluxe king room (with one bed), which wasn't such an issue. But when speaking about this at the desk, the staff stated we had booked the room with the kingsize bed. I wasn't able to check that during the trip but home again checking it at booking.com, it appeared I was right.
