Honoka’a was prominent during the sugar plantation era and was an economic center for the Hamakua Coast with lots of history, including the importation of various ethnic groups to work on the plantations and their eventual assimilation into the multi ethnic culture that exists today. A microcosm of life in early Hawaii.

Honokaa is a beautiful Hawaiian hamlet with many historic buildings. Though the focus of my stay was elsewhere, my time spent in Honokaa was pleasant and friendly. A walk through town was greeted with friendly locals, plenty of coffee shops and places to eat inter-mixed with public buildings (often in historic sites), and businesses catering to local cultural interests. A view of the ocean is evident from most parts of the main street. I would love to return and explore it more fully.
