- While the location is good in terms of connections to the public transport and proximity to the Union Square, it is close to quite dodgy areas of Tenderloin with a lot of homeless people of Jones str. and Leavenworth str. - Windows are dirty
- Personnel is good and forthcoming, we had 2 separate bookings in different room types and could stay in the same
Shutters didn't work too well. Construction had the workout facility closed.
Quaint, small but comfortable room, friendly helpful staff.
No A/C which means you need to leave windows open...lots of street noise, fire trucks go by multiple times at night, loud clubs on both sides of hotel- one lets out drunken crowd at 2am. Spotty internet. Fleabag hotels on same street. Would not recommend during warmer weather. Elevator old and slow.... Musty smell
Cute hotel not too far from Union Square, several good breakfast places close by, felt safe walking to and from square. Coffee and water supplied.
Noise due to on-going construction..
Like all older style city hotels, street noise can be a little loud
This is an old hotel... But its lovely decor has been modernized with everything you need
Elevator always occupied with the cleanning staff Wi-fi sometimes didnt work
Cleannes Confortable bed Staff
Other than the bed, which was very comfortable, the room was dank, old, smelly, worn and creepy. The tv didn't work, a wake up call was never received and the water was shut off for 3 hours in the morning. Definitely worth a full refund if I were to bother. They even charged us for smoking in the room when we don't smoke, and wouldn't refund the money after repeated attempts to get the refund. Would def not stay here again.
The staff was excellent! Our night concierge was very professional, polite and informative, although the cleaning staff claimed we smoked in the room, which we didn'T.
The soiled carpets in the hallways
loved room 205
Room was too hot and noisy
Fun, very clean and comfortable hotel with a lot of charm. Love the older style buildings and the rooms have been nicely decorated. The staff were super professional and very kind.
We enjoyed our stay at the California. Appreciated the great.location which provided easy access to restaurants, public transportation, and stores. Would stay on our next trip to San Francisco.
Friendly staff, comfortable bed, and walkable distance. The Hotel California is definitely one of my top choices for visiting San Francisco.
We found the homeless people begging on the streets very disturbing. The hotel is a bit old fashioned but I understand it's undergoing a revamp
Location very good the reception staff were very helpful
Not clean, room was very small. Staff was not nice.
House keeping rushed out of room
Customer service very pleasant
The hotel had no business center, no common area for guests, and the neighborhood was not very inviting after dark.
The bed was very comfortable. The price was good for San Francisco.
there was a funny smell throughout the hotel lack of chairs in the room no safe street noise
the location the bed the staff the coffee making facilities
Price was steep for what you get (fairly basic room) but San Fran is an expensive city
Hotel was in good location - about 5min brisk walk to Union Square. Is on the border of Tenderlion so there were a fair few homeless people around but they were fine (also not the hotel's fault). Staff were very helpful with all our questions and check-in/out was a breeze. Would recommend. Check out the Pizza Shop up the road (Geary St heading away from Union Square) Also the hotel provides free tea, coffee and Pineapple cupcakes every day - nice!
Hard to sleep with street noise and rooftop bar next door. Not the hotel's fault at all. The builing is a stunning 'classic' and as such, not as noise proof. Would recommend to others though. We loved it.
Lovely clean room with comfy bed and well appointed bathroom. We had a room at the front of the hotel, so the noise was quite bad, but that is the price you pay for such a beautiful historic building. The staff were wonderful and the free umbrellas were a godsend as it rained heavily for the first part of our stay.
Noisy all night, sirens, horns honking outside our room.
location was excellent!
It's a bit noisey but that was expected in San Francisco
bed and room were excellent.
Excellent friendly staff who goes out of their way to help out especially Karen and Troy from reception who tried to help us out with our WiFi problems. Also concierge William and his young mate who helped shift us to another room as TV wasn't working. Have recommended your hotel to many of our friends.
Not happy that hotel changed owners and was not told ahead of time. We booked hotel with breakfast and then when we signed in we were told of new owners and no breakfast.
although very popular the vegan restaurant was not for us
at first disappointed that breakfast was no longer supplied but having experienced this on a previous visit didn,t let it daunt us and was well fed across the road.ashley a receptionist was a joy.
