The staff were great, very welcoming, friendly and helpful. Location is good but the area itself is a bit rough at night. Although I appreciate that this is the tenderloin. However this may put other people off.
No a/c, this made the room quite uncomfortable. No bar or bistro belonging to the hotel. There is an adjoining restaurant but the operating hours are limited.
It takes about 5 min walk to the Union Square and there are lots of places where you take breakfast. The hotel does provide free bottles of water everyday and free tea and coffee and cakes in the afternoon.
Rooms are a bit small and waiting for the lift seemed interminable. The noise coming from the night time revellers can be a bit much.
The front desk staff were friendly and helpful during our first trip to San Francisco. We took the bikes they had, for free, and enjoyed some time site seeing around town. I enjoy the wood floors in our guest room and the building is nicely renovated while sticking to the place's heritage. The bathroom was also a nice size!
We could control the temperature of our room that well. And we weren't on a high floor so I was hoping to bring in some cool San Francisco air into the room at night, but the wi words barely opened.
Comfortable bed Big fluffy towels Excellent location Friendly helpful staff
Nice place and close to everything.
Advertised parking is a pay lot which is the same rate you can get anywhere.
Staff & location
Lovely, smaller, personal hotel. We loved SF and enjoyed staying here.
Good location, friendly staff, clean rooms.
Street noise and no AC
This is an old hotel but has character and charm. I stayed twice at the hotel as my husband & I spent one night here and the following week when my daughters arrived, another 3 nights. Our first room was a queen room which was comfortable and clean, and later a Family Suite. The suite was very comfortable and fairly large with the two separate bedrooms, which is good when you need your own space. The staff were very helpful and the location to Union Square is excellent. The hotel is reasonably priced for it location as San Francisco is an expensive city.
Only one little problem the blinds in our queen room were broken.
Massive comfortable bed, quirky decorations, good location.
Noisy pipes! Good otherwise, spoilt by the 6am showerer making the pipes scream.
Location for this hotel is fantastic, 2 min's from union square, hotel is a bit dated but that adds to the charm of San Francisco. The beds and bedding are very very comfy. Checking in staff were brilliant and very efficient. The lift is an old one and makes your stay so authentic, tea and coffee in the lobby always available and the pineapple cup cakes in the afternoon were great. Plenty of places for breakfast on the door step, have a short walk up Powel and a little café on the corner called Roxanne was excellent. Cable cars on Powel street are a must, buy a 3 day ticket from Walgreens, you can use these on all the public transport, $27 adult price for 3 days. Each ride on the CC is $6 each so well worth the price. Great hotel, don't lose its charm too much when you do the renovation. Thanks for a great stay.
Some street people all around, keep to main streets when walking around don't go off the norm its a bit scary. They don't pester you though.
Friendly staff. Very comfortable bed and bedding. Even though the room faced on to the road it wasn't too noisy. Loved the bath robes and would have liked to buy them and the umbrella. Nice touches.
The room did get quite warm and that is in a cool September.
Location is still quite central, the rooms are small but cleaning is provided every day. The building itself is fairly old with a strange smell inside, but it has a nice atmosphere. If asked, the staff is forthcoming and helpfull. Allover the hotel is fine for a couple of days stay in SF.
The coffe for free is provided at the reception, but very often there was no milk or cream.
Room, comfort, location, cleanliness, pineapple water and good coffee
Elevator was down a few times when we would haul bags and some luggage- the unbelievable noise issues; people screaming, singing, drunk, noisy sex in cars below our window, 1 person so drunk and everyone fighting about whether or not to call 911...no relaxing sleep at night whatsoever.... We won't be back. Too bad- could be a nice hotel to stay at!
Good value for money, location and quality of rooms
Hotel blocked excessive room charge on credit card which took a week to correct and clear.
The value for money... and also it is different in a good way. The location is at the edge of a sketchy area in SF but has close proximity to Union Square and Market Streets. The staff was exceptionally nice. The rooms were very nice, not too big, sort of old-fashioned. The bath and room were quite nice and unique.
Rooms on Geary Street side are very noisey. This did not bother us, and the hotel provides ear plugs, but it might bother some people. We slept just fine. No breakfast is included but there is coffee or tea in the room.
Location town center Very fri!endly staff
Good location, very helpful staff and Fluffy towels
Very beautiful, very confortable, very nice bedroom and bathroom!!
Price, but I think it's the average price in San Francisco. To stay in the city is expensive, not The Hotel California's fault, actually.
Style, architecture, staff, location
Excellent location right by Union Square. Easy access to trams and bus tours. The staff were very helpful and great free wi-fi reception. Clean rooms with regular maid services and a lovely comfortable bed!
Location, equipment, friendly.
The bathroom was clean and the towels were of good quality.
The shutters were broken, the armchair's upholstery was totally ripped up, the bed was creaking, the TV set was mounted parallel to the bed and not facing it. They have a "new" bed making system, with one duvet per person instead of one large duvet for two, which was so uncomfortable we dubbed it "double-trouble". The hotel smelled of sewage. The neighborhood is unsafe and loud and dirty. Overall, it was very expensive and very disappointing.
Very small but clean rooms.
Location is noisy on the weekend (lots of noise from rooftop bar next door). There's no air conditioning so you need to leave the window open to cool the room down.
We loved the atmosphere at the Hotel California. The hotel is over 100 years old, and as are MANY of the buildings in San Fran, so it was great to stay in a hotel where you actually feel like your in San Fran! The rooms are small, yes, but quaint and modernized, we were very impressed! The staff were wonderful and provided complimentary bikes to use for the day which took us all around the city.
