The value for money... and also it is different in a good way. The location is at the edge of a sketchy area in SF but has close proximity to Union Square and Market Streets. The staff was exceptionally nice. The rooms were very nice, not too big, sort of old-fashioned. The bath and room were quite nice and unique.
Rooms on Geary Street side are very noisey. This did not bother us, and the hotel provides ear plugs, but it might bother some people. We slept just fine. No breakfast is included but there is coffee or tea in the room.
Location town center Very fri!endly staff
Good location, very helpful staff and Fluffy towels
Very beautiful, very confortable, very nice bedroom and bathroom!!
Price, but I think it's the average price in San Francisco. To stay in the city is expensive, not The Hotel California's fault, actually.
Style, architecture, staff, location
Excellent location right by Union Square. Easy access to trams and bus tours. The staff were very helpful and great free wi-fi reception. Clean rooms with regular maid services and a lovely comfortable bed!
Location, equipment, friendly.
The bathroom was clean and the towels were of good quality.
The shutters were broken, the armchair's upholstery was totally ripped up, the bed was creaking, the TV set was mounted parallel to the bed and not facing it. They have a "new" bed making system, with one duvet per person instead of one large duvet for two, which was so uncomfortable we dubbed it "double-trouble". The hotel smelled of sewage. The neighborhood is unsafe and loud and dirty. Overall, it was very expensive and very disappointing.
Very small but clean rooms.
Location is noisy on the weekend (lots of noise from rooftop bar next door). There's no air conditioning so you need to leave the window open to cool the room down.
We loved the atmosphere at the Hotel California. The hotel is over 100 years old, and as are MANY of the buildings in San Fran, so it was great to stay in a hotel where you actually feel like your in San Fran! The rooms are small, yes, but quaint and modernized, we were very impressed! The staff were wonderful and provided complimentary bikes to use for the day which took us all around the city.
I have no complaints
They had the softest towels I have ever seen!
The people the location the weather
Nice room with a homely feeling. Only a few minutes walk to Union Square, cable cars, buses, metro and restaurants
Our room was on the front of the building and there was loud noise from crowds of people each night
The hotel is only 5 mins walk from Union Square and easy to get around. Customer was very good and particularly so from Rebecca at Reception and William, one of the porters, who both were so helpful and friendly. We were allocated quite a small room when we first arrived but the next day we were upgraded to a much larger room at the front in recognition of our Ruby Wedding, which we were celebrating while staying there. Both rooms, however, were comfortable. There is a quirky old-fashioned lift and the hotel has a very popular but fairly expensive vegetarian/vegan restaurant. The hotel offers tea/coffee and cupcakes in reception every afternoon, which is a nice touch.
The room we moved to, though more spacious, was at the front and we found it quite noisy. It is quite an old hotel and therefore the double glazing is a bit ancient.
The rooms were wonderful, clean and comfortable
Street noise was extremely loud
No hot water Shower didn't work Had to move ourselves to another room. Manager was nasty and very rude when we ask for a cut in our rate. Never notified that the hotel had changed ownership
The hotel was well located close to union square
The hotel had been advertised as best western with free bikes and breakfast included. However when we arrived we discovered it had been bought by another chain and breakfast and bikes were not included. However the staff immediately gave us an appropriate discount. Our room was a bit noisy at night.
location was good. We were told Breakfast was included when it was not. Bar was closed at 9.30 on 22nd May when we wanted an after dinner drink!!!!
Great location Room was cozy but not cramped
Tiny, very slow elevator Slightly dizzying stairwell Breakfasts and afternoon wine reception discontinued between the time we booked and when we arrived
clean spacious room, friendly, helpful and informative staff, close to Union Square....we enjoyed our stay here
slow and variable WiFi
Poor Wi-Fi in room, no breakfast available in the hotel
Perfect location. We booked the hotel with breakfast included and there was no breakfast option when we arrived. But we asked about it and it was promptly taken 25USD/day out of our daily price.
Noisy room. No breakfast.
location, fair breakfast, bright bathroom, large tv, good mattress, thick towels, wine & cheese on lobby, staff
bed with depression on the center
Its a quaint old hotel in the style that you'd expect in San Fran. The lift was quirky!!! And it was only a few blocks from Union Square excellent.
The room & bathroom were a bit small but it was ok as it was only a base to see & do things.
