We enjoyed our stay at the California. Appreciated the great.location which provided easy access to restaurants, public transportation, and stores. Would stay on our next trip to San Francisco.
Friendly staff, comfortable bed, and walkable distance. The Hotel California is definitely one of my top choices for visiting San Francisco.
Location very good the reception staff were very helpful
We found the homeless people begging on the streets very disturbing. The hotel is a bit old fashioned but I understand it's undergoing a revamp
Not clean, room was very small. Staff was not nice.
Customer service very pleasant
House keeping rushed out of room
The bed was very comfortable. The price was good for San Francisco.
The hotel had no business center, no common area for guests, and the neighborhood was not very inviting after dark.
the location the bed the staff the coffee making facilities
there was a funny smell throughout the hotel lack of chairs in the room no safe street noise
Hotel was in good location - about 5min brisk walk to Union Square. Is on the border of Tenderlion so there were a fair few homeless people around but they were fine (also not the hotel's fault). Staff were very helpful with all our questions and check-in/out was a breeze. Would recommend. Check out the Pizza Shop up the road (Geary St heading away from Union Square) Also the hotel provides free tea, coffee and Pineapple cupcakes every day - nice!
Price was steep for what you get (fairly basic room) but San Fran is an expensive city
Lovely clean room with comfy bed and well appointed bathroom. We had a room at the front of the hotel, so the noise was quite bad, but that is the price you pay for such a beautiful historic building. The staff were wonderful and the free umbrellas were a godsend as it rained heavily for the first part of our stay.
Hard to sleep with street noise and rooftop bar next door. Not the hotel's fault at all. The builing is a stunning 'classic' and as such, not as noise proof. Would recommend to others though. We loved it.
location was excellent!
Noisy all night, sirens, horns honking outside our room.
bed and room were excellent.
It's a bit noisey but that was expected in San Francisco
Excellent friendly staff who goes out of their way to help out especially Karen and Troy from reception who tried to help us out with our WiFi problems. Also concierge William and his young mate who helped shift us to another room as TV wasn't working. Have recommended your hotel to many of our friends.
Not happy that hotel changed owners and was not told ahead of time. We booked hotel with breakfast and then when we signed in we were told of new owners and no breakfast.
at first disappointed that breakfast was no longer supplied but having experienced this on a previous visit didn,t let it daunt us and was well fed across the road.ashley a receptionist was a joy.
although very popular the vegan restaurant was not for us
- location nearby union square - valet parking - popular restaurant in hotel, many ´food shops´ nearby
- rooms are rather small - noise level (no sound insulation) - older building
The staff were great, very welcoming, friendly and helpful. Location is good but the area itself is a bit rough at night. Although I appreciate that this is the tenderloin. However this may put other people off.
No a/c, this made the room quite uncomfortable. No bar or bistro belonging to the hotel. There is an adjoining restaurant but the operating hours are limited.
It takes about 5 min walk to the Union Square and there are lots of places where you take breakfast. The hotel does provide free bottles of water everyday and free tea and coffee and cakes in the afternoon.
Rooms are a bit small and waiting for the lift seemed interminable. The noise coming from the night time revellers can be a bit much.
The front desk staff were friendly and helpful during our first trip to San Francisco. We took the bikes they had, for free, and enjoyed some time site seeing around town. I enjoy the wood floors in our guest room and the building is nicely renovated while sticking to the place's heritage. The bathroom was also a nice size!
We could control the temperature of our room that well. And we weren't on a high floor so I was hoping to bring in some cool San Francisco air into the room at night, but the wi words barely opened.
Comfortable bed Big fluffy towels Excellent location Friendly helpful staff
Nice place and close to everything.
Advertised parking is a pay lot which is the same rate you can get anywhere.
Staff & location
Lovely, smaller, personal hotel. We loved SF and enjoyed staying here.
Good location, friendly staff, clean rooms.
Street noise and no AC
This is an old hotel but has character and charm. I stayed twice at the hotel as my husband & I spent one night here and the following week when my daughters arrived, another 3 nights. Our first room was a queen room which was comfortable and clean, and later a Family Suite. The suite was very comfortable and fairly large with the two separate bedrooms, which is good when you need your own space. The staff were very helpful and the location to Union Square is excellent. The hotel is reasonably priced for it location as San Francisco is an expensive city.
Only one little problem the blinds in our queen room were broken.
Massive comfortable bed, quirky decorations, good location.
Noisy pipes! Good otherwise, spoilt by the 6am showerer making the pipes scream.
