The woman at the front desk was very friendly and very helpful. The location was great. The accommodations were nice although not necessarily as upscale as I would like. But clean and serviceable.

There really wasn't anything that I did not like about it. It fit our budget for this trip.

Staff and location

Property very run down and lacking basics(no bedside lamps and bad mattress')very uncomfortable. Noisy until about 2 or 3 in morning. Very poor value

Location

Bathrooms are very old. Toilets need to be replaced. Pictures shows a jacuzzi in the room but it is not true.

I didn't like that my child found condoms and panties in the room.

Very run down. Not well taken care of. Really poor free breakfast. All gluten, except for the one banana. Shower and bath falling apart. Coffee maker still had used coffee bag in it.

Staff was freindly and helpful. Room was clean.

Frist day we arrived room was not nice at all.We ask for a different room. Second day the key to the room was not working it was late at night. Room was very cold. Room was not clean.

I Appreciated the great customer service. They were really nice to us and had no problem helping us find our way around.

I would have enjoyed our night here, but we just happened to be there when a group of young adults were there and they were partying all night banging on the walls and constantly in and out.. That was a bit disturbing, but other thn tht it was ok for the price.

The price was excellent,and the owner and his brother had excellent customer service skills. I would come back because of this.

I forgot my slippers for the first time ever in my travels,and I found the wood-looking tiles to be uncomfortable. They were cold all the time and made me wish I had slippers,or that there was carpet on the floor, especially after the shower when my feet were still damp after drying off. Very cold

The owners were very nice and helpful about directions to local attractions, etc. The room was clean and warm. I had to leave early, but it had nothing to do with the stay.

Hair dryer, coffee maker, microwave, refrigerator/freezer, ironing board, and safe.

Hair dryer didn't work - impossible to keep operating without a finger on the on button. Since the other hand has to hold the dryer, how is one to use a brush or one's hand to style one's hair? Pillows too soft. Offer one soft, one medium and one firm in each room. No daily newspaer available on premises or close walking distance.

Staff was friendly and helped us with everything we needed! Price made it worthwhile.

small room for our family. The hotel was just taken over by new owners (3 weeks prior to our visit) and they were still figuring out what needed attention.

The new owners were very accommodationg and friendly. The location was very good for visiting Monterey and area, and the price was excellent.

The fact that the wi-fi never worked, the faucets leaked,the shower barely worked, the T.v stopped working till they came and fixed it.. The dinner table wobbled, and the bathrooms paint was falling off.. Oh, there so-called continental breakfast was a joke! I will never come back or recommend anyone, unless they refund me a portion of my 200.00

My wife and I visited Monterey last weekend and stayed in Howard Johnson Express Monterey. Because of its good price, we were afraid that the rooms might be dirty and things not working etc. Our room turned out to be very neat and clean. The TV and refrigerator looked a little old but all the amenities functioned well. The bed was comfortable. Above all, the service from Mr. Patel, his family and staff was excellent. I would definitely recommend Howard Johnson Express Monterey because of its great value for the money.

The whole experience was terrible! Extremely smelly rooms....by the 3rd room (given we could not get our money back) we had no choice other than to accept. The 3rd room was an "upgrade" which included a VERY dated jacuzzi and firelace which we were told we were not allowed to use....because of the upgrade.....other than the shower, there was no seperate bathtub! The whole hotel was extremely dated, needed a complete renovation.

It has a Convenient location for access to Monterey and Carmel.

The heater/air conditioner did not work. Bathroom ventilation was poor, making it always wet. The flush chain in the toilet tank broke and needed to be repaired, twice.

Room seemed clean

Room was clean but had a musty smell, there was a plunger next to the toilet and the flooring between the wood and tile had a one inch gap, forgot the connector strip, could have been dangerous or hurt barefeet. We had room #115 and late night guest came in above us and were very noisy until after 2 am. You could hear every foot step, the wood floor amplified the sounds and it was very annoying. The guests decided to take a shower at 1:30 am and it sounded like an intense rain storm, very loud. I couldnt sleep for almost an hour after they quieted down around 2:20pm waiting for another thud on the ceiling. Finally when I fell asleep it was good but slept in and missed the breakfast. I dont feel it was the fault of Howard Johnsons because of inconsiderate guest, however, it is their fault because of the flooring type that was chosen for the upper floors. I would not stay there again and wouldnt recommend to others, I would like to be compensated for at least half of the cost of the room, but not holding my breath.

Room very clean, hotel very convenient and room very quiet. Courteous reception staff. Toast is nice in am.

Did not get room service! We called desk to say we had been gone from 10:30 - 4:30 and were told that because we put out a do not disturb at 9:30 the staff 'skipped' our room. This is very poor service and no apology was even offered. Otherwise everything was adequate.

Very good price for the quality. The position is really good, allowing to easily reach either the Acquarium and the Fisherman's Wharf (5 minutes by car for both directions). My girlfriend Laura and me loved Monterey. Do not miss the Acquarium!

The receptionist has not been the most pleasant girl I met ;)

Paint chipping, door lock broke, light in bathroom burned out, room wasn't ready at the 3pm check in time...dump.
