It was clean and the owner was very friendly ans helpful. We totally enjoyed our stay.
What can I say? This place is just simply fantastic! It's a simple looking house with really nice, beautiful tropical-styled interiors. The double-bed bedroom comes with a tv & so many sockets to plug your devices. It also comes with 2 powerful fans & 2 fan-aircon like devices that makes sleeping comfortable even in the hot tropical climate. And not only that, but the bed is also very comfortable to sleep in as well. You also get 3 sets of towels in case you forgot to bring one like me! The shared bathroom is very also clean, and the showers are powerful and heated! Perfect after a long day of hiking in the lava fields, or from Mt. Mauna Kea! It also comes with shampoo & a hair dryer! What a bonus! Their kitchen comes with a nice big refrigerator which you can store you groceries, and ice cream from safeway. It also has a microwave, a cooking stove & a coffee-maker complete so you can buy all those delicious Hawaiian coffee beans and have your coffee here! If you have a car, the parking here is not problem at all! There are around 5 rooms in the house and there's parking space for 4-5 cars so parking for me was never a problem. There's also laundry in the parking. The wifi is also fast and excellent. Perfect if you have some work, or have to check reports/stuff on a vacation! The location is also excellent! It's just 4 blocks away from the Puainako shopping center which contains a KTA store, a sack and save, Baskin robins, Mcdonalds, taco bell, jack-in the box and many more. So finding food is never a problem! And finally are your hosts, Cynthia and her daughter Natasha. They're so very nice, approachable and hospitable! Cynthia even gets up to make breakfast & coffee for her guests. So you can have breakfast with everyone here, tell them your day, share stuff and so on. It feels like home!
- 6 nights wasn't enough!! You really need more time if you really want to get a more extensive feel of Hilo and Big Island!
Kind host, good breakfast, room spacious, great place to meet other travellers
- bathroom is outside the room whereas it was written "private". - Room and bathroom are not clean. If you look under the bed or in the corners you'll find dust, stains and spider webs. Fortunately the bed linen is more or less clean - old furnitures - it smells really really bad in the communal parts probably due to the cats/dogs staying downstairs -> Expensive (117$/night all included) for this standing.
Cynthia is a great host. Beds were very comfortable and all guests were made to feel welcome. Kitchen facilities were perfect for our needs. Located close to supermarkets, airport for ease of travel.
Hot water tank is limited meaning cold showers are likely.
Friendly and helpful owner. Flexible check out.
Not clean. No air condition. Modest breakfast. Good just for sleeping.
a chance to experience what a real Hawaiian home was like. The owner was friendly, knowledgable, and helpful...a joy!
If you are expecting a 5 star hotel, this is probably not your cup of tea. On the other hand, if you are seeking a quaint, comfortable, clean bed & breakfast that is centrally located and reasonably priced, you'll definitely enjoy it. The owner was absolutely awesome and the hospitality was outstanding! I would definitely recommend!
Host is very hospitable You feel at home Great location close to attractions and Hilo airport
Mostly minor: Shared Bathroom Fan cooler was not too effective Limited (though great) breakfast
The owner is very kind and makes you feel at home. Parking place at the apartment.
I suggest to install a signboard of the apartment on the street.
I'm from windward Oahu. Location, climate, and atmosfere is similar. The best of all it was quieter than I thought.
The lady who runs it is wonderful
Really hot room, and a small biting dog. Be very careful to stay outside the fence when trying to get owners attention. I opened the gate to knock on the door, and an angry tiny dog ran out and bit into my shin. His teeth were clamped shut, and touching under the skin, and he was really hard to shake off. I sliced between the two punctures, and cleaned it up fine, but will never wear shorts around crazy tiny dogs again. Great place to stay, but yell from outside the fence, unless you bring a steak.
This B&B is in a great location so that business or leisure travelers can easily get to their point(s) of interest. The accomodations are clean and comfortable. Our host was friendly and informative. I would recommend this to other travelers.
Cynthia is an amazing host. She's very friendly and she made me feel at home. She also gave me very useful info on what to do on the island. She cooks great pancakes! The room was cozy and clean. You will enjoy your stay!
Cynthia was very accommodating and friendly. Beds were very comfortable. Enjoyed our stay!
Didn't care to share a bathroom, but still was very nice.
The house was very comfortable and clean. Everything was supplied for us, including a wonderful breakfast with fresh fruit! The bed was comfortable and we had plenty of room for all of our things. It felt like staying with family.
A little warm during the day, but we were gone most of the days anyway.
Well, I booked this guest house, and I arrived at night, so I was driving in the dark, and my first impression of the dark place scared me. But the household Kelly met me up in front, helped me to park my car and let to go inside. I was so impressed how comfortable and really nice were the room and the facilities. Kelly is an amazing person! We have been talking for almost one hour. She's even made me a small present. Everything was clean, and I felt myself like at home. Unfortunately I stayed at this guesthouse only 6 hours, as I needed to go to the volcano at 2 am, to see it at night. That was incredible.
The host (Cynthia) was a doll, always cheerful and helping us out whenever we needed anything, especially when my friend got into some health issues related to his eye. She's always socializing with the customers and establishing social connections between them. The facilities might not be top notch, but she makes up for it in personality, service and price. Me and my friend would recommend Hilo Shaka Shak to anyone staying in Hilo. Oh and she makes great coffee and pancakes in the morning.
Somewhat rundown facilites, but still great for the price. Wifi can also be a bit hit and miss from time to time.
Very friendly and caring host.
This tucked away home for travelers who want to be left alone is perfect. The owner is a delight! We only stayed long enough to shower from our hiking all day and then off to catch our plane home. She was wonderful and sweet.
No wifi in rooms
too far from bus route
Ultimately felt overpriced. Taxes and $20 cleaning fee made it $111 which was really not a great value. Room rate was $78.
Friendly host. Clean
I love the owner, Cynthia! She is a super friendly and kind person. The house was built in 1950's. It's old. That's why I could feel it just like a visiting my relatives. Her homemade pudding and Mauna Loa view from the room window were extra bonuses for us!Thanks!
very nice owner, very good breakfast with pancakes
