Peace and serenity away from the typical tourist crowds. Spectacular views of the valley isle. Charming rustic cottage in the clouds. Stress reduction at its best. ;)
Lots of insects, animal noises at night. Not really terrible, but mosquitos will keep you awake if you leave windows and doors open.
My wife and I stayed in the Makai cottage and loved everything about it. The best part of staying here is Anne, the property manager. She is very personable and friendly and does everything she can to make sure your stay is the best that it can be. Beautiful sunsets, cool breezes and the Kula Bistro down the road make this a very relaxing and wonderful place to stay.
There was nothing I didn't like but if you expect to have a maid service clean up after you every day you probably shouldn't stay here. But if you are self-sufficient enough to clean up after yourself and do your own laundry then this place is for you.
The extra amenities were very appreciated, such as some basic groceries in the fridge and cupboards filled with some basic food supplies (coffee, honey, teas, etc.). There was also a very nice gift basket upon arrival that was unexpected and a pleasant surprise. We used the CDs of local music in our car as we drove around the island. Lovely!
A slight musty smell as we first got there. Probably just due to the humidity of being on a tropical island, though, and it went away the longer we were there after we had aired it out a bit.
The view was amazing. You can see West Maui and both sides of the ocean from the deck. The house was clean, better than some hotels. Nice touch of a welcome basket with a few treats. The kitchen has items to use!! There are spices in the cabinet, basic mayo, mustard in the fridge for making sandwiches. Coffee beans ready for grinding for a fresh cup of coffee to start your day. Laundry soap, shampoo, conditioner, bath soap all out for your use. Was really like going to someone's home and staying. We arrived during the day and had no problems finding the cottage. The directions where spot on. There is no ac so just be ready for a little bit of heat in the mid-afternoon. (Why are you at the cottage anyhow, go see Maui!). It does cool off in the late afternoon, by morning you need sweat pants and a jacket because it is so chilly in the cottage. Great sleeping weather.
I would like to suggest getting a few more small fans, we found 2 and really needed just one more. Nothing that the cottage owner can control, but the rooster that starts crowing at 430 is a little tough.
Location The landscape The sleeping place The animals
the decor of old Hawaiiana. the koa framed quilts and ones on the bed.. the well equipped kitchen. Great to have ice cubes. The welcoming basket treats. the quiet. the view.
Some mold on the quilt pillow cases. the creaky livingroom floor. the step up to the tub with no step stool. Getting out was harder than getting in. The missing picture in the stairwell. The oil painting placed over the stove.
We loved the central location on the island, just high enough in the hills to have spectacular views of the northern "turtle head" and both east and west shorelines. The cottages are at the base of the volcano, and near the beginning of the Hana Highway, which was a breathtaking journey in and of itself. There were many creature comforts in the cottages that made it feel warm and relaxing. The Makai Cottage seemed was well equipped for a small family or even a second couple, if privacy isn't an issue. The neighbors are extremely friendly and the property management team was extremely responsive and made every effort to make us feel comfortable and happy. I'd recommend this place for my parents who are 60 as they would probably appreciate the tranquility more than my young bride and I. Tudor's solitude and views were absolutely spectacular, making evening drinks and morning coffee a delight from the balcony. Good WiFi and DirectTV were also included, which was very nice. Makai was more rustic, with authentic wood floors from the '30s.
We stayed in two cottages; Makai (two room, split floor cottage) and Tudor (single room, honeymoon cottage). Makai didn't have enough privacy for honeymooners and was fairly dusty, probably due to the small farm nearby. There's a rooster that crows day and night, but always by 3:30 am. It was impossible to sleep without earplugs. At Makai, too much light got into the place, so sleeping in was impossible without an eye mask. The master bed was a soft memory foam, which hurt our backs. The downstairs bed is a twin, so there wasn't enough room for us to be comfortable on that. Tudor's bed was semi-firm and comfortable. Tudor had a hot water timer to conserve energy (two hours in the morning and two in the evening), but that rendered the romantic bathtub useless, in addition to being inconvenient pretty much all the time. Daily cleaning service is not included, and you've got to haul your trash down to the end of the road on Tuesdays and Fridays. Extra towels and blankets were provided, but you've got to wash your own towels and sheets if you're staying for more than a few days or require frequent showers. The cottages certainly had their charm and positive attributes, but for the price I would have split the trip with a modern, clean resort like Honua Kai.
Fantastic location: actually not on the beach but on the hill, with a great view on the ocean (both sides of the island) and stunning sunsets ! A lot of "charme" as we say in French: a really nice small cottage, with charming features and in fantastic condition. We spent 3 nights there with our kids and everybody enjoyed it !
Nothing negative to say.
Great cottage in a great location. Very different from the typical Maui vacation.
The cottage itself is spotlessly clean, the large balconies with view towards the Maalaea Bay and Kihei was brilliant. Watching sunset from the cottage and stargazing at night is the highlight of our stay on top of everything else. Drive to Haleakala only takes about 45 minutes and the location is very convenient to get to just about everywhere. There were many stores and good restaurants close by, very convenient. We've very much enjoyed the welcome basket, as our flight got delayed and we arrived late in the evening of Christmas eve, without the pineapple and the cookies and chocolates, we would have had a very miserable time, but thanks for Anne that did not happen! There was also a small optical Christmas tree in the lounge. There were a booklet of information for the surrounding areas, and books, boardgames and DVDs to keep you entertained during the stay. There are extra blankets and electric heater to keep you warm at night (the cottage is at the foot of Haleakala so it gets a bit chilly once the sun is down). We all loved the cottage as it provided us with a homely feel. I strongly recommend rental of GPS Navigation system with the car, without it we wouldn't be able to find the cottage at night.
Finding the cottage that we stayed (Makai Cottage) at night was not easy, as you park in the front there were two cottages that were obvious, one at the other side of the lawn, ours were tagged away in trees and there was a path down, unless you walk down the path it's hard to tell if there was anything down there. There were some indication lights but we just could not find it and ended up knocking on our neighbour's bedroom doors to ask for directions, which after he's pointed out, it's rather obvious. Maybe a little signpost in the parking area towards the cottage would be helpful, but in daylight you couldn't miss it. There were also two dogs that patrolled the area. We were not sure where they had came from but when they came down barking and bouncing it was rather scary. As a child I witnessed my cousin getting chased and bitten by a dog and it had traumatised me since then, and encountering two dogs in darkness was not a pleasant experience.
We really liked being in the upcountry and the quiet of the location. It was close to our son who lives in Pukalani. The local restaurants were excellent and fairly reasonable price wise. The place was very clean and well equipped for cooking - beds comfortable- bathrooms updated. Heaters helped with dampness. Very nice and liked price for the week.
Last part of driveway could use some maintenance - pretty messed up. Refrigerator looked dirty on outside and wasn't very appealing to look at but fine on inside.
The view from the balcony was really amazing! And everything else was exellent in general.
The unique location and view, great equipment in the cottage, very helpfull and friendly owner
