Beautifully secluded in a tropical park with aimable host Irene; excellent breakfast; Irene really is trying to adapt to her customer's requirements. If you look for a place away from the typical hotel style, this is the place for you !
My one week stay at Lava Tree Tropic Inn couldn't have been more excellent. A beautiful host and an idyllic setup made it easy for me to explore The Big Island while staying in a rain forest paradise. The host was more than helpful with providing me with tips for exploring Hawaiʻi (even snorkeling gear can be borrowed to explore the nearby tide pools of Kapoho). The freshly arranged breakfast each morning definitively was another highlight you probably won't find anywhere else. I would loved to stay at Lava Tree Tropic for any of my future visits!
Felt just like home
Irene, our hostess maintains a beautiful home in a somewhat remote location near Lava Tree Park. It is so peaceful and beautiful. Irene is a very special woman who prepares a wonderful breakfast with fresh fruit and other daily surprises. The coffee is great! The vegetation on the property is plush and there are even chickens roaming around. It is a real oasis!!!
We loved it all. Traveling the distance was well worth it.
The breakfast is amazing and the location of the house is beautiful. I would certainly recommend staying here.
location, nice room
Irene, has an infectious smile; which invites you into her B&B. The Inn is immaculate with quiet breezes and periodic gentle rain drops. I LOVED her desire to accommodate different cultural needs. Her home made bread, jams & breakfast cheese spread are reason to wake up. Lastly, she has varied suggestions to those who want to venture out of the immediate area. So if your family wants to venture off the main highway (2.5miles), I assure you will find a peaceful, welcoming home away from home....
The distance from Hilo is about 20 miles. But ALL the hotels were full & much more expensive. I feel blessed to have been accommodated by Irene since I made last minuet reservations during the Merrie Monarch week.
A beautiful b &b surrounded by a tropical rain forest, Irene is a considerate and talented hostess. Fresh fruit for breakfast, mostly from the surrounding garden, close to Hilo and Pahoa and the local black sand beach.
There is a rooster who makes entirely too much noise too early!
the absolutely quiet location, the cats and of course Irene and her breakfast - we'll go back
well, the mosquitos were a pain but there's little one can do about those...
Cool place if you like to be in nature. Great brakfasts around a big table; makes people communicate. Nice home made food for breakfast, such as jams, bread, fruit salads, smothies, cream cheese with spices and herbs. Superb!
Difficult to find in the dark. Ask the landady for GPS coordinates, do not follow the 'Lava Tree Tropic Inn' in the GPS ; this takes you into someone else's garden. one needs to keep to breakfast times at 8 am otherwise there is no breakfast, mind you it's worthwhile it!
Irene is the perfect hostess for this charming B&B in its magical rain forest setting. She was warm and welcoming, and nothing was too much trouble for her. The room was clean and comfortable, as was the bathroom. The breakfast was continental style, and we never left the table hungry - lots of fresh fruit (from the gardens), yoghurt, cereal, tea, coffee and freshly baked bread. The kitchen was open to all guests (including use of a fridge), although we were made to feel more like friends than guests. If you want a peaceful, secluded hideaway at which you will have to get to know the other guests (we made Swedish and German friends) and that is only a short distance from volcano, tide pools, thermal spa, lava tube and beautiful secluded beaches, Lava Tree Tropic Inn is for you.
Nothing! People may wish to know that the B&B is remote and is located way down a dirt track, and the grounds are inhabited by several cats, chickens and inumerable coqui frogs - all added charm in my opinion. Downstairs has a Bohemian air to it, which sums up the unique, off-the-wall, off-the-beaten-track yet very homely feel to the place. Bathrooms are shared with one other couple/family when the B&B is full. If you want bright lights and loud music look elsewhere (although ukulele practice was in full swing when we arrived!).
wonderful hosts!! plus everything is organic...really missing lovely and creative breakfast there;))
use the lavatree national park instead of the hotel name when u do GPS search!!!
Loving attention given by hosts. Gorgeous natural setting with native plants surrounding the property. We were able to eat outside while watching and listening to the birds. We also enjoyed the leisurely conversation that developed with the other guests coming from all parts of the world, somehow always well educated and expert conversationalists. The B&B is charmingly decorated, furnished.
Do take a cell phone because it is difficult to find, and you may need to call for clarification of directions.
Everything !! Irene was so kind to even feed us the best lentil soup the night my son came in from riding his bicycle from Hilo to the Mauna Kea visitors center. He had been riding for 71/2 hours. One of the best B&B"s I have ever stayed in, and I have stayed in a lot ! Thank you Irene, Peggy
The Lava Tree Tropic Inn is a genuine B&B, it's remote, you share with other travellers and it's got plenty of character, thanks to hospitable Irene. Anybody visiting this B&B in Puna has got the imagination to be part of this special alternative Hawai'ian location.
Be prepared to search for the location, and be overwhelmingly suprised when you found it.
Mrs. Irene was a fantastic host, very friendly and welcoming. The breakfasts were delicious and it was absolutely quiet and dark, just what we needed.
Room a good size
Very slow breakfast. Driveway only suitable for 4WD. Shared bathroom No laundry or cooking facilities.
Amazing location even if not so easy to reach. Excellent hospitality.
very charming property on the country site. the rooms are pretty and have a vintage chic. no tv on the rooms which we did not miss at all. irene, the land lord, is very accomodating and takes care of everything and everyone. the breakfast is for foodies... tasty, healthy and fresh. almost everything is homemade and comes from irene's garden. overall we loved staying there and we will surely return.
Jungle, and how it seemed remote yet wasn't. I love the community / spirit of that side of the island.
Very friendly staff, who was helpful in suggesting nearby activities.
the environment is very good, the breakfast also well prepared. In the forest, the clothes are not easy to dry
in the dark, it is hard for people to see the sign to turn into the lava tree
This place is really special. Irene the owner is a sweetheart and tries to make your stay as comfortable as possible. The B&B is located in the middle of a rain forest and Irene owns a great deal of land and she grows avocados, oranges, guavas, macadamias, bananas, star fruits, and many more. She picks fruits daily and includes them in your breakfast. The breakfast is AMAZING! Ah the coffee is exquisite. The aroma is better than Italian coffee (and I am Italian!). The rooms are spacious and bed was super comfortable. Lava Tree Tropic Inn was a glorious experience and I can't wait to experience this again.
The road to the gate should be paved. Hilo is a very wet area - remember it is a rain forest! The humid weather invites mosquitoes.
Great host (Irene) Great location Super breakfast
lots of chicken = noise in the morning!
Our host Irene was wonderful! She treated us as company and we feel like we made a new friend. The breakfasts are amazing! We loved the location and the symphony of frogs at night. We would definitely visit this beautiful place again.
