Shopping and dining We did not feel safe on the street where it is located, they keep the doors locked all the time and you most ring a bell to enter. |

Central location, reasonably comfortable Bad/no choice of breakfast; no breakfast room; 'homeless neighborhood'; personnel friendliness after check out - during several phone calls the personnel proved less than cooperative in searching for two soft toys, invaluable to my son of 4, unfortunately left behind probably between the linen; I was particularly dissapointed by 'couldn't care less' type of response; toys are still in sf :-( |

Location, Friendleness and helpfulness of staff. Clean rooms and lobby. The staff and the owner mad us feel at home. We would stay there on our next trip. |

The Layne is conveniently located downtown near Union Square (lots of restaurants, galleries, shopping, transit) and is very reasonably priced; these two factors were our main reasons for choosing to stay there. Upon arriving, we found that the family who operates the place is very friendly and polite, and that our room was very clean and comfortable, though basic, and rather small. Continental breakfast is prepackaged gas-station pastries and a styrofoam cup of tepid coffee; we only had that once, and afterwards, went out for breakfast--Dottie's and the Olympic were favorites. It is also worth noting that the hotel is on the periphery of a pretty rough part of the city, so there's some noise and um, activity on the street. Nothing really to worry about though. |

Location and price. The reception and the elevator are really old and needed a refurbishment. The hotel main entrance usually is closed. The room is not adequately sound-insulated, so everyday I was woken up by the garbage truck at 6 AM. Although the neighborhood is safe, specifically the area around the hotel is full of people making noise and creating problems. We asked reception to order a taxi the day we were leaving and the taxi did not show up. |

The proximity to sites and attractions. Our room was clean and comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful. It was noisy but that's what you expect when you're staying near popular sites and attractions. If planning on walking to the hotel, I'd recommend taking Geary vs. O'Farrell because the route from O'Farrell was a bit scary (e.g., groups of people, some with drug pipes and needles). However, it is in/near the Tenderloin so one should expect this to some extent. |
