As other reviews have mentioned, the carpet was filthy and sticky in the room I booked through Booking.com. My feet were literally black whenever I walked across it. (However, when I stayed an additional night, they moved me to another room and that carpet was spotless.)
Many of the towels are either threadbare or badly stained. They are clean, but rough on the skin.
A housekeeper didn't knock at all and walked in on me while I was naked in the bathroom which was very embarrassing -- both for her and for me. The TV was on in the room, but she didn't bother to knock on either the room or bathroom door. Also, on my last day in the first room, even though I had a "Do Not Disturb" sign on my door, someone came into my room while I was at the pool and emptied my garbage. Although it wasn't in the garbage, they took a plastic bag with a receipt in it which was on the floor next to the garbage can. I wanted to exchange that merchandise, but it was not possible without the receipt. I mentioned it to a Supervisor at the front desk later and he shrugged and said he didn't know anything about it and obviously didn't care.
When I decided to stay an additional night, I called the front desk, and they promised to call back and didn't call at all. After a few hours, I went up there and the Supervisor who was there acted very strangely about the whole thing. He emphasized that I couldn't extend through Booking.com -- which I didn't ask about or expect. I just wanted a room for an additional night. It was as if he just didn't like Booking.com based on his derogatory tone. He told me I could have a different room and would have to move -- although they had lots of available rooms. He told me I'd need to check out at 11 a.m. and wouldn't be able to check back into the new room until 3 p.m. He couldn't allow me to leave my belongings anywhere even though I don't have a car.
The location was fabulous. It was a very quick walk to the boardwalk and beach. There was a breakfast place close by, plenty of restaurants, a bar with nightly live music, and a 7-11 literally around the corner.
There's a nice sized flat screen TV, a fridge, a microwave and the beds are very comfortable.
The room was spotlessly clean, other than the carpet. They provided shampoo, conditioner and soap.
The front desk staff were fabulous -- friendly, helpful, even funny. It was a real pleasure to deal with them. They had coffee available at the front desk. They also had a very nice security guard at night, Cortez. I had the pleasure of meeting the assistant manager, James, one morning. He gave me fresh towels and he was really nice as well. I needed maintenance for a blocked toilet and someone came to my room in less than a minute. He was also pleasant and helpful. This hotel obviously trains their staff very well and chooses people who really like what they do. I've never received such great customer service before. BRAVO!
The pool isn't huge, but there's plenty of room there, nice chairs and loungers, and it's larger than some of the pools in other hotels around. It's also very clean and the chemicals are checked daily.
Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel, especially if you would like to be close to the boardwalk. The buildings are older, yes, but the property is very well maintained and they really do the best they can. Yes, the shower is small, but it's very clean. My friends stayed at a different hotel and their shower was smaller and full of mold. You won't find that at Madison Beach and you'd be hard pressed to find a better deal on the boardwalk which is clean and pleasant.
