very good price compared to hotels; location within walking distance of hiking trails; rain forest, rural setting still close to town; great place for people not expecting luxury!
poor maintenance of property; clean-up of junk around buildings would also improve things
It could be quiet nice, if it was cleaner.
It just was not clean! The bedding was covered in animal hair, and had stains, they needed washed. The bathroom needed attention as well as the tub area.
The location outside the bustle of downtown. The quiet bush setting. The charming Texan boys with whom we shared facilities. The rustic unpretentious atmosphere. The price!
Maintenance and cleanliness was not up to standard. Woken early by roosters. (I didn't mind this but my wife hated it). No functional BBQ - this was glaring omission that could be resolved at very little cost I mistakenly booked for an extra night due to crossing the date line but was refused a refund despite giving only one day less than the required 14 days cancellation notice. I thought this was very bad guest relations and would prevent my making any positive recommendation.
Location excellent. Landlady nice.
No shelves in refrigerator. Only hot water in shower, but better than only cold water! Had to ask for hangers for closet. Cable TV didn't always work.
Bush clad location, having kitchen facilities. charming fellow guests, good parking, friendly geckos in the room
Roosters b4 dawn, the shower didn't work, having to share bathroom, dilapidated nature of some facilities, no bbq.
It was quite, the room was clean, public kitchen..
Far away from Waikiki, very quiet, kind of old-fashioned furniture, could have been better for that price, but was okay..
Price location spacisness
Loud chickens and last ditch appliances; loose cold water knob in tub, missing shelves in fridge , chicken poop on doorway inside , ants by the thousands and a few cockroaches and helpful geckos. Sharing with one other bedroom.
Marie was very nice when I checked in. We literally only needed a place to sleep so we wanted something really cheap.
There was a rooster (or some other similar fowl) outside my window that didn't stop all night long. I didn't get a wink of sleep. In retrospect I would trade off paying more at another place for less "wildlife". Although I do have to say, visiting Hawaii twice now, the random chickens everywhere is an authentic experience.
They canceled our reservation and offered to transfer us to a similar hostel in Waikiki. The reason we booked the Makiki Heights Drive was so we didn't have to stay in Waikiki but with less than a week to go we accepted the new reservation at the Pacific Ohana Hostel. This new hostel in Waikiki was pretty much a crack den.
The Makiki Heights Drive is a place where you can stay in a private atmosphere away from the hectic Honolulu downtown and Waikiki areas. Nevertheless you are quite close to the interesting places in Honolulu. You can cook for yourself, as there is a fully equipped kitchen
The setting is quaint, up on the hillside of Oahu, and commands a beautiful view of the area. Yard plants were beautiful. Ferrel chickens, a nice touch. I grew up on a farm, and liked that. Our hostess was nice, she manages the place for her parents, and lives in the front house. Ours was a bedroom with access to the living room and kitchen. We were only a few minutes from the town area, and well into residential. The shared bath was adequate, and no problem.
The cleanliness was an issue. The home, and rooms within are a bit rundown. The furniture, in our room was broken, and quite dusty. The floor was gritty and there was no broom we could find. The linens were clean but old, stained, and torn. The bed comfortable enough, but we slept on beach towels, and the fan was a help to keep cool. The coffee pot wasn't usable as the grounds basket wasn't cleanable. A disappointment. The clorox wipes we were requested to use in the bath was empty and had been for a while. we replaced them with a new container.
I like Marie. The fee is incredible low and the area is good.
The bed could have been better .It was clean.
Staff was helpful with suggestions of restaurants and activities nearby Convenient location for one night
Bugs,spiderwebs Worn towels
Location was close to downtown
Noisy roosters and feral cat noises during the night Room was not clean Noisy fan Hostel style setting
The location, 2 min walking from a 2.5 hiking loop. 15 min by car to Waikiki/Honolulu Harbor. Marie is great & helpful.
just the location
Room was dirty, with potato chips on the floor, broken woods in the closet, smelly bed.....
I liked having access to a kitchen and laundry facility during my 9 day stay. Made life much easier. The staff was very nice. Marie was accommodating to us during our stay.
Not a fan of the constant bug bites I received from local wildlife while staying there. Many a bug found around the place.
They cancelled my booking the day before I was due to check in saying they had over booked, leaving me to take what ever was available in Honolulu which proved to be more expensive. These people should not be allowed to run a B+B as it is not teh first time they have done this according to the reviews. I only hope they have not taken any funds out of my account as well
Good friendly staff
I swear is was a sperm stain on the sheets......I got there late and just left the top sheet to cover what looked like a sex stain (like the sheets weren't washed!)
