Pahoa is smaller than Hilo but feels more authentically Hawaiian. Having said that, there is access to restaurants, a grocery store, gift shops etc. It was a good starting point for trips to a black sand beach, the volcano, the botanical gardens (a must see!), and other sites.

PAHOA is a very Large district many individual suburbs, Kalapana, Kalapana Estate Pahoa, Hawaiian Gardens, Paradise, Orchidland. Ainaloa, Leilani Estate and so forth I believe it's all part of PUNA. So it's huge... Over all I really enjoy Pahoa cause I have my best friend who lives and work in the heart of Pahoa she's is such a blessing. So Yes I Love It There. Lots of delicious places to eat at even from the side of the road, Certain days you can buy Fresh Tuna and other fish right from the Ahi Man!!! Amazing 😍

Pahoa is off of the beaten path.
Pahoa is off of the beaten path. I have come to Pahoa only to visit my family members who have lived on the island for over 10 years. The town Pahoa has added a good shopping center with Malama grocery. And Pahoa is close to the volcano and the beautiful coast. Wouldn't recommend Pahoa as a tourist destination. But if you're not the touristy type, this is the place for you.

Close to the most recent lava flows, Lava Tree State Monument, Star of the Sea Painted Church and scenic coastal drives. Nice small town with several places to eat. We particularly liked Pho 19 and the Smoothie Shack. Olympic size public pool. Lap swimming is free!

Try to go to Uncle Roberts place at the end of the road on Wednesday nights. Quite the experience. Other things around the area offer lots of lava and the state and national parks (especially the ones on the water) are amazing. Great remote place like no other.

Love Pahoa and it's aloha spirit, a community devastated and dealing with so much after last year's eruption. My visit was primarily to meet with friends and to make a minor contribution to the community struggling to rebuild and recover from Tutu Pele's "redecorating". The relocated Volcano museum was educational and Vincent made my day! Mahalo Vincent! Don't miss the opportunity for lunch or dinner at Kaleo's ….ono food!
The cabin is so great that I immediately regretted I only booked it for one night. I should have booked for more nights!!!
There are lots of animals: peacocks, turkeys, hens, geese, pigs, etc. There are lots of birds chirping in the forest, but they did not affect my sleeping at all.
There are also many tropical trees in the garden. Cocoa tree, banana tree, etc. It is pleasant to walk among them.
The staff Lakshmi is super nice.
I like this hotel so much. If I visit the big island again, I will definitely stay there longer.
Location: So close to beach, hilo and vulcano national park
Free Parking nearby
Super spacious room with comfortable double bed
Very friendly owner
Least expensive private room on the whole island, maybe even in whole of state hawaii
Kitchen fully equipped, Restrooms nice
Nice sitting area outside, and hanging around makes fun too, super quiet to sleep. My favorite Hostel from now on, i would call the whole area with private rooms more like HOTEL instead of HOSTEL
Raven and Mark are incredible hosts and have created an amazing lodge in Big Island. Off the beaten path but yet close to town, it's the perfect escape. The suite was huge with a beautiful garden and outdoor shower. In the morning, Raven made delicious breakfast with eggs, toast and fruit presented very artistically! Rest of the day we spent in nearby beaches and also watched gorgeous sunsets from their lanai. Can't recommend this place enough!
When you drive down a dirt road through two locked gates to arrive at Irene's Lava Tree Tropic Inn, you are swept into a charming world of lovely estate fruit and nut trees, great conversation and warm hospitality. Our host Irene was simply wonderful--I feel like I've met a new friend. The estate is a 10-minute drive to Pahoa and convenient to explore Hilo and Volcano National Park. The inn barely survived the 2018 lava flow--thank goodness!
Absolutely fantastic breakfast prepared by Jim personally. Every day different homemade meal, mostly from products grown in the garden. We had an issue to eat everything what was served and everything was excellent.
Lovely place in the middle of community area surrounded by the nature. Great place to explore Volcano park and whole southeast coast of Big Island few minutes drive from Pahoa city center.
we loved our stay and enjoyed our time in the hilo area. the location is beautiful with a lovely yard and pool area. the 3 dogs are also a big plus and were loads of fun to have around. they were so accommodating and after forgetting something in our room they had it sent to our next destination(different island!)
thanks so much for the great time
Raven and Marc are the sweetest hosts ever.
They took so much care of us, and their dedication is incredible.
This is really a true local experience , don’t go if you are afraid of little critters, or expect a Hilton hotel.
We cannot recommend this more for adventurous families, or friends, or couples that want to experience the real Hawaii !
The hosts (Susan and Andre) were very helpful. They sent not only detailed driving directions and instructions regarding the property but also information about nearby beaches, stores, restaurants etc. Moreover, they refunded the deposit for the non-refundable booking that we had to cancel in 2020 because of Covid 19.
Helpful staf that picked and dropped me in Pahoa.
Pretty good wifi. I had to make a video call (which I usually don't do and hate) and it worked fine.
Room was comfortable.
The road is in bad condition but regular cars can definitely make it.
Clean.
Very remote. Again, I liked it, but maybe not for everyone.
Great bungalow, amazing atmosphere, perfect location for Pahoa and very cozy for someone alone or a couple. The outside of the room is very nice for breakfast or for meditating. The kitchen has everything. There were some fruits on my arrival. The bathroom was very clean and well equipped.
Irene went to great lengths to make us feel at home. It was like staying over with a favourite Auntie (who makes great breakfasts). The location is perfect if you like getting away from the town yet conveniently close for Pahoa and a good base for the volcano areas.
The host was very friendly. Our experience was like visiting a family member (like visiting uncle), very welcoming and caring. We had really good conversations. It is not a hotel but host is doing further improvements to make your experience to the best.
Beautiful house in a peaceful location. Very interesting to see Fissure 8 nearby. Lots of room and storage. Very nice to have 2.5 bathrooms. We enjoyed sitting out in the yard. The host was kind and interesting to talk to .
The property was beautiful, and a nice size house. Location was near Hilo and volcano, so after activities it was great to unwind and relax. Host was attentive to anything we needed and very helpful on things to do.
Beautiful location near the ocean. Lovely artwork. Outside shower. One comfortable bed. Roomy. Lots of lights. Very friendly and eager staff. Great climate. Bidet. Lots of outlets. Good wifi when it work
A nice house in the beautiful rainforest. We loved everything, especially the hot tub. The host was very kind and provided a ton of information regarding sights to visit and nearby events.
It’s a cute and cozy unit. It was nice and clean. It’s not too far from Pahoa town. Allen and Dianne are wonderful people. They were so welcoming and so accommodating. Great stay!
