The two staff members I met at the front desk were very polite.
Rips in carpet, mold in ceiling in bathroom, hair on the faucet, filth on the blinds, boxed in mattresses leaving one no idea what lies beneath. Needs major renovations. I was booked for three nights and left after the first night. Yuck
I got what I expected. Friendly staff, historic building (though thoroughly modern), with meals available (room service) and restaurants within the structure. Come, enjoy! Both The Lafayette Hotel and beautiful Marietta on the Ohio and Muskingum Rivers.
Bedroom lighting was poor.
I went to high school down the river from historic Marietta, so on a trip from SC to Northwest OH I purposely chose the Lafayette Hotel for its river front location and historic old hotel charm. It did not disappoint. It rained during my short stay, but it is well located as a hub for historic sight seeing. It had convenient free parking and a decent restaurant. The room was small, as warned by other reviewers, but was laid out much like the small cabin my wife and I once shared on The Delta Queen sternwheeler. I was traveling alone so the full-size bed was adequate. The bath was pretty large and very updated.
The room appeared to have baseboard heating and the A/C was an old, noisy, but effective window unit. The bed was not comfortable, not uncomfortable. It was passable for one night, too stiff for my taste. Dinner was like heated-up leftovers, but tasty. Breakfast was freshly prepared and pretty good (and free if you selected the Traditional Breakfast option).
Historic aspects of building Night desk person Restaurant - the Gun Room was neat and staff was friendly
Smell in the elevator Air Conditioner and heat going full blast in room and no ability to control the temp Rude front desk person on daytime
The historical look and location by the river
Mildew smell in lobby drinks are entirely too high 9.50 for a shot of patron ridiculous
the detail from the decore / design of the rooms & woordwork & decorations
room on the street side was very loud. lots of hillbillies and rednecks driving around with NO mufflers late into the evening
The staff and the history was awesome!
This place is amazing. You feel like you've stepped back in time as soon a you enter the front door. Other than a few modern updates, you feel like it looks the same as the day it opened in 1918. Great room value, views of the river, and historical charm make this our favorite weekend getaway location.
Other family members were staying at the hotel and e enjoyed the use of the lobby. Also it was nice to have a beautiful lounge and excellent breakfast.
I like that it was on the Ohio River and staff was very friendly. We liked the nostalgia of the hotel. Very nice.
Our room was a bit small. Didn't expect it to be as small as it was for a room with a double bed. Picture was a little deceiving on line but we liked it just the same.
Wonderful themed rooms, old world charm, fantastic situation.
Nothing, loved the place
Unique older hotel--excellent room and value
The fact that it was an old hotel and had old world features. Sleeping on a steamboat was a thrill
our room had no view
Location, history, staff.
Despite thriving college, lovely town struggling in changing economy.
We liked where it sat. We liked the age n history of the motel. The staff was good n informative. Price was unbeatable for location. We didn't have a lot of spare time but we hope to come n stay again to do more site looking.
Parking was a little tight but ok . Rooms a little small for wife n I with infant but was accommodated immediately with a pack and play
This is my favorite place to be. I have been wanting to come here and stay again for 2 years!! The whole location on the river is fantastic. Close to exercise and activities! The room are clean, cozy, and unique! The pancake and coffee at breakfast were fantastic! Receive a voucher for a free or money off of the breakfast, which is a fantastic deal!! And the view from the rooftop bar is amazing! Will definitely be there sooner rather than later!!
Had the feeling of being on a riverboat and scenery out over the river was excellent . Roof top bar was another thing we liked .
Parking lot too small and spaces are tight . Small elevator !
It was very quiet. A unique room.
We knew it would be a small room that we used but it was just fine as we just needed someplace to stay for two nights.
The Lafayette is on the bank of the Ohio River, just a stone's throw from the confluence of the Muskingum - a lovely setting in the picturesque little town of Marietta, Ohio. If you walk the old railroad (now pedestrian) bridge across the Muskingum you find yourself in Harmar village, again quaint and filled with shops and other attractions. We elected to take the smallest, least expensive, room (about $73 including taxes). The room was made up to resemble the boiler room of a paddlewheel steamboat, and artwork and wall decorations fit the theme nicely. The room was small, but we anticipated that, so it was not objectionably so. The bathroom had been nicely updated and, like the room, was very clean. We looked in on a Queen Room while it was being made up, and it was quite spacious and filled with beautiful antiques. We will probably choose such a room for our next visit. Included in the room rate were two coupons for $5 each off the price of breakfast in the hotel's beautiful Gun Room restaurant. Service there was excellent, as was the food. Linen tablecloths and napkins and heavy flatware made for an elegant meal. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful, giving us tips on where to go in town and what to see. Our waitress at breakfast suggested we walk over to Harmar, which is where she lived. All in all, the Lafayette represents great value in a beautiful setting.
The only disappointment we encountered was that the two largest attractions, the Ohio River Museum and Campus Martius, were both closed on Tuesday, the one day we could be there. Our disappointment could only be blamed on inadequate planning on our part, but then it gives us a good reason to visit Marietta again.
The meals i ate in the Gun room were very good they were homemade and the wait staff were so nice .the prices are very good i give it 10/10
I had to wait for the shower to get hot it took about 5 min but thats not really a big deal
The hotel is full of history. The food was excellent. The room was small but inviting and comfortable. I would recommend it to anyone.
The feeling of going back to the past to see what our granparents would have been a part of.The easy access to a riverboat ride .Our's was the best as my first cousin got married on the Valley Gem Sternwheeler.Got to go upriver to the locks and back. Plan to come again and get a balcony room.
Didn't get to stay long enough to enjoy everything we wanted to see.
Staying at the Lafayette is an unforgettable experience. It is a historic 19th century hotel which still maintains much of its splendor from steamboat era on the Ohio River. The view of the Ohio River from the hotel parking lot is, by itself, reason enough to stay here. While restoration of the hotel is incomplete, work that has been is evident,
I applaud the effort being made to keep this historic hotel running for future generations, and I'm sure the cost to do so is high. There needs to be a balance between keeping the historic integrity of the hotel, while offering lodging that will appeal to modern day travelers. My room, for example, was tiny, designed, I think, to suggest a cabin on a steamboat. When I say tiny - one foot between full size bed and wall on each side - barely room to navigate. I found the room charming, but suspect others would not. Also, it seems to me that the hotel has not made it a priority to hire the the type of highly experienced staff a facility like this deserves. While the staff I encountered seemed well-intentioned, they were inexperienced. The hotel restaurant, "The Gunroom", is beautifully appointed, but service was slow, wait staff inattentive, and food very mundane.
It was very charming and the staff was spectacular! The front desk lady had me park my motorcycle in a covered spot out of the way in case of rain. She suggested that, not me! the room was very charming, ac kept it cool. Wi-fi was weak, but it's good to take a break from the internet! right down town, and the complimentary breakfast was the best any hotel provides! we even saw an old bald naked guy who locked himself out of his room... we are better people for it.
