The location is the best thing about this inn. Once we parked the car, we didn't get in again until we left b/c everything was within walking distance, which is good because there is a lot of paid parking in Newport. The list of dislikes is long......no maid service (at least this was the case for us), no information about the full breakfast that is included....it's in another building, but we weren't told, so we had no idea, once we arrived at the full breakfast, there was no menu or food displayed, so we had no idea of our options. The young kid asked us what we wanted but we had no idea of the choices. The owner of this establishment also owns three or four other inns, and it appears he's in over his head, as basics are left out.

Upon arrival, my girlfriend and I were upgraded immediately to a room that Rick thought we would enjoy more. He even gave us the option to pick between two rooms. He knew we had been riding for a long time and immediately offered us water. The location is perfect for walking in Newport! We only had to take the the motorcycle out to Ocean Drive and Cliff Walk. Parking is tight but we were on a bike and Rick had a nice, safe cubby hole for us to park in. The breakfast was very tasty with several choices. Our room was beautiful and clean. My girlfriend wasn't feeling well one afternoon and the staff printed me a "do not disturb" sign to put on the door so she could rest. I would, without a doubt, recommend any of the Clarke Street properties to anyone staying in Newport! The price seems expensive until you view all the other area B&B's and even the hotels. The only thing we were put off by was the one "waitress" at breakfast. She seemed to be a very unhappy lady and it showed through her service. She had a strong accent that was hard to understand when she was ripping off the choices for breakfast. She really needs to slow down, greet the guests in a happy manner and smile!!!! But to counter her, we had a wonderful male server the next two days. I didn't catch his name but he was young and had tattoos. He was very friendly and took great care of everyone in the breakfast room! Rick was a little short with me on the phone when I called to ask some questions the week prior to my arrival, but once I arrived, I seen why. The guy runs around like a nut! He has to be one of the busiest, hardest working guys I've ever seen. So if you can't catch him on the phone, just wait until a few days before you arrive and he will call you and give you the attention you need.

Upon arrival, the owner (Rick) offered to switch us into more comfortable accommodations to suit our family of four. The staff was friendly and couteous, and quick to offer assistance with information on the local eateries. We enjoyed breakfast very much - particularly by my daughters, who can be pretty selective eaters. Rooms were quaint, nicely decorated, and comfortable. Location was excellent, well within walking distance to the "main drag" and the popular wharves. All-in- all, I would highly recommend the Melville house as an excellent bed and breakfast choice. Although parking in the lot is a bit tight, I never had a problem coming or going.

None of the above words describe somewhere like Melville House. Old traditional b and b in 1700's style in old seaport town, so very niche. Not everyones chocie, but if you like atmospheric and unique style then very good. Slightly expensive, but then it is Newport in high season

The room was clean with a very comfortable bed. The owner is very personable, and we were given an upgrade at no charge. The staff also provided us with detailed information about where to eat and the location of sites we wanted to see The location is extremely convenient, near the harbor, shops, the tennis facility, and historic sites. Breakfast could not have been better.

Our stay was made extremely nice by a very accomadating staff and especially by "Rick" the owner. They went out of the ordinary to see that any possible needs were met during our stay. Breakfasts were great thanks to Shasha and Pasha. They were having a bit of a problem with internet access, but Rick was doing all he could to correct that, even to the extent of up-grading our room.. I doubt that should be a concern in the future.

I was accommodated in the Newport Inn which was located 50 meters from Melville House. I was told it's an upgrade but I'm not really able to judge if it was better or worse than Melville House. This is typical Newport wooden house, very old but 'with soul' and furbished in the pleasant old-fashioned style. Very comfortable bed but unfortunately window is not opening due to the air-condition (very loud actually) mounted. The location is great! In general it's ok for 1 or 2 nights, but if you expect something extraordinary search for another (more expensive) alternative. - Loud air-condition - window could not be opened - breakfast only so-so...

The room was laid out well and the recently installed air conditioning was very much appreciated since the temperature was in the mid 90's during our stay. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was very good as well. The only complaint would be the communication regarding where to have breakfast was somewhat confusing. We signed in where we were told, and then the next morning, breakfast was not being served there. Maybe a written communication on the door or even a notice left in the room would have been helpful.

Great setting and location. Owners and staff very welcoming and accomodating. Also flexiable in scheduling as could only stay one night and this was the only hotel/inn that would book for only one night on a weekend. That was very accomodating.

Buona la posizione nel centro di Newport, accessibile alle strade principali. Parcheggio per i clienti gratuito con posti limitati. Edificio storico interessante. Buoni i pancakes. Camere davvero piccole, arredamento molto datato e tenuto male. Avevamo una camera a piano terra buia e abbastanza claustrofobia. Pulizia assolutamente carente, tutto era pieno di polvere.
