My parents and I stayed at the cardinal for a trip up to Palo alto for a family luncheon. The cardinal hotel was so perfect for us. My mother has been staying there for over 20 years and she loves it. This was my first time but will not be my last.
Intersting and old-fashioned yet very clean. Good location in downtown Palo Alto, very good for those that are visiting Stanford.
The staff was very friendly. The only reason I'm not rating them as excellent is that once when I arrived late and the front door was locked I had to wait for about 5 minutes until someone let me in which I though was too much.
I liked being in downtown Palo Alto where everything was central and the building was an original! The value was really good for what I paid and they held my room until midnight for my late arrival. The rooms were small but very nice and clean. I chose to get a room with a shared bath and it worked out fine....never had to wait for the facilities. There was a nice sink in the room itself.
Although the rooms were very current and pleasant, for some reason the hotel lobby (which had a nice fireplace and adequate furniture) had a skid row air to it. It was mainly due to the ugly plaster walls with no artwork which were painted a horrible beige! I can't imagine why they would have the rest of the hotel looking so nice and have such a seedy looking lobby. Other than that I was very pleased with my stay at the Cardinal.
Very nice owner, helped us a lot with requests
The rooms are clean, bedding was fresh and modern but you have to be someone who appreciates nostalgia and doesn't need the 'clinical' feel of our newer hotels (it has old fashioned 'touches'). I found it charming and reasonable as a local business person with an hour commute to Pal Alto who didn't care to spend $500/night down the street just because I had a crack of dawn business meeting the next day. And eating at Nola across the street was an added bonus. Make sure you secure a room with its own bathroom (as I did. Apparently there are some rooms with a shared hallway bath--I don't care for that much 'tradition') and ask for a room on the opposite side of Nola for peace and quiet (I did and it was quiet).
The front desk staff could be a little more cheerful but heck, you just check in and don't really need to interact with them further.
Overall we found the hotel to be clean and comfortable in a central location, with a good deal of old world charm. We had a room with a shared bathroom but there were no issues with access to the bathroom when required.
We had a room on the street side of the hotel, so there was a bit of noise at times.
The bed and the retreat upstairs from the lobby. Great for hanging, working, reading and eating without being stuck in ones' room. The respected old world decor.
Customer service- way he was talking, not too friendly or welcoming
Downtown location Old fashioned style
Could be modernized
The persona treat was excellent
The showers not in the room
bed was comfy, location awesome
had a shared bathroom (no other rooms available), while reasonably clean I would not recommend this to anyone.
All, specially the hotel´s team and its location. Awesome Business Center
Really liked the comfortable lobby, upstairs lounge /business room and free tea, coffee and chilled water.
Would have benefitted from double glazing to reduce street noise.
Excellent hotel at a very good location. Everything is kept so clean, that even strange idea of sharing a bathroom/shower facility (which is located at the hall, not in the room) is not that dangerous :)
Hair dryer in the room is VERY strange. You should press and hold button on the hair dryer base (on the wall) with one hand and hold hair dryer in the other hand. I have never seen such system even in other hotels/motels in US.
Charming 1920s style, the lobby invites you to sojourn there discussing books, ideas, music... Comfortable central position in Palo Alto, no problem to find a parking place within 100 m at night. Efficient window insulation from noise of A/C plants of the neighborhood ensured good sleeping. No air conditioning, just a ceiling fan, and none of them was needed. Early morning light breakfast in adjacent French bistrot (included in room price) lets you start the day nicely.
Loved the location, friendliness and comfort.
The front desk people were excellent.
This is my second time to Cardinal Hotel! The value-for-money aspect is unbeatable. The location is perfect! Right in the middle of downtown Palo Alto. For people visiting Stanford, this place is perfect as it's within walking distance to Palo Alto Caltrain station. From there, you can take the shuttle bus into Stanford! The shared bathroom is very clean and comfortable!
The same male staff on night shift is quite unfriendly. His attitude ruined an otherwise perfect stay in Cardinal Hotel (for the two times I stayed there).
Bed was very nice and comfortable, room and bathroom were clean, very nice amenities in the bathroom. really appreciated.
Pub across the alley was very noisy and sound-proofing was not good, the fact the hotel actually provided ear plugs was not a good sign. It could have been because the hotel is old though they have renovated.
Nice pleasant staff. In the heart of Palo Alto. Clean and comfortable.
I really liked the location. It's located in the center of downtown Palo Alto. Everything is within walking distance. The shared bathroom was great as well.
Some of the front desk staff could have been friendlier and more polite. I was also not informed that the hotel were under some minor renovations.
The location, the location, the location! Also, my room: it was large, comfortable, and spotlessly clean, with a nearly silent ceiling fan that kept the place cool even on hot summer days.
The only thing I didn't like was the behavior of the front-desk staff: what a surly group of people! Unsmiling, unfriendly, unenthusiastic, as if they hated their jobs and didn't care a whit about the guests. Come on, people on the front desk, smile a little!
Very handy to the centre of Palo Alto, and offers a nice continental breakfast at a French run restaurant next door.
It was very hard to find parking, but everything else was great! Thank you!!!
