I like that the staff was very friendly. The rooms looked like rooming boards when you first get out of prison or an orphanage. There were drunk people hanging out in the lobby and there was liquor spilled on the elevator floor. The halls were spooky and it seemed like we were walking the green mile. I honestly would not reccommend a living soul to stay there.

The front desk was very helpful. Bed was not confortable. Location was a bit far from reliable transportation. Over priced. Missing some Basic items. Overall Fair, but only because the front desk and cleaning people were very helpful.

Water supply Air supply Electricity supply Heating was permanently on. We sweated on the plastic sheets all night. The window looked onto a strange boiler room, so was completely pitch black without lights, plus no air. There was a very eerie heavy breathing sound from beyond this window. I woke up in the night thinking I would need to defend myself. No phone in room. Bullet proof glass at check in and armed guards. Ghetto neighbourhood. Scandalous rate of room due to lack of competition. Second worst hotel I've ever stayed in. It was like something from a bad horror movie.

The price It was very loud in the room. U could hear everything that went on in other rooms n haul way. Bathroom was not something I was willing to shower in. The neighborhood that its in I found out is the ghetto of new jersey. When we got out of our car out front we almost got run over by guys riding dirtbikes. This place was nothing like we thought it would b from the pics on the website. I would not stay again and reccomend that anyone looking for a place keep looking. Please learn from my mistake

I was expecting much worse than my stay 'cause of all the negative comments but honestly we only stayed like maximum of 10 hrs (overnight stay for an early flight) - the hotel is not that bad, I mean for the value... we paid $75 for 3 people (2 bedroom) so that's pretty good, and at least it wasn't carpet in the rooms The entrance looks like you're going to see a friend in jail, security to the left and bullet proof on the front desk. It smells quite awful, the elevator, the rooms, the halls etc... The wifi only seemed to work in the lobby 'cause in the rooms it didn't work. The location is what you would expect from a hotel that is close to the airport.

Requested early check in and was granted which was real nice. The hotel can simply be summed up as "you get what you pay for" The neighborhood the hotel was located

Close to Newark airport. Clean rooms. Cheaper than New York. Area was intimidating. Bit rough. People hanging around the lobby late. Paper thin walls. Active neighbours either side throughout the night. No restaurants or shops nearby

The place definitely has history. We even looked it up and have a look for yourselves: http://www.newarkhistory.com/mlkblvd.html It looks a little bit run down, but we didn't experience any of the terrible things people mention in their reviews. The room was clean and spacious. No mice, bed bugs, racoons or cockroaches. You can tell the hotel is old and perhaps rooms need renovation but 'old looking' is not a synonym of 'dirty'. There was even bottled water in the fridge and candies. No tea and coffee making facilities in the room - so English visitors might be disappointed, but again - for this price I expected worse. If you are on a budget it's an excellent option for you. If you are traveling as a couple or with a group of friends - it's comfortable enough. For European understanding I would probably call it a hostel. Regarding area being unsafe: we haven't experienced anything to indicate it's true. We walked to the hotel from Newark Penn Station every evening on the way back from nyc and both times it was fine. And it was late at night. We haven't been mugged, haven't seen any homeless people (apart from the train station), no gangs fighting on the streets :) I do understand one might get a strange feeling being the only white person on the street - but it makes me laugh - how traveling to Africa or India is cool and staying in the middle of a 'ghetto' (which I don't believe it is anyway) is 'uncool'. However if you are uncomfortable walking at night - there is a bus service (ticket is $1.50) straight to the station and the bus stop is literally across the road in front of the hotel. The staff was friendly, helpful and easy going. There is a computer with a printer (standard for American hotels, but didn't expect it at Riviera as our room rate was so cheap - so it was a nice touch). The receptionist was very helpful explaining public transport options for us and very informative. Didn't like the reviews on the website - they got me scared - still - took a risk of walking back to the hotel at night - which turned out not to be a risk at all :) Advice to the hotel: you are doing a great job under the circumstances, perhaps you should think of refreshing the bathrooms - as a lot of travelers might find them unappealing. Otherwise there is really nothing we didn't like :)

I liked that time went by fast so I could hurry up and leave to another hotel because they wouldn't give a refund It was 100% horrible hotel! It smelled there was no blankets on the beds I aske for an iron they didn't have any???? (Ok most ppl who come to hotel have clothes that's been in a suitcase so their clothes are most like wrinkled!) No fridge or microwave it was more set up like a extremely cheap motel on the back roads of a no named town.... I've never been to a hotel that don't have at least a fridge this was def a horrible stay it cost 70 then they don't tell u but there's no Parking on the street so u have to pay an additional fee to park in a locked in gated area...if u wana leave u have to get security to let u out and if u wana come back in same thing....having a secure place to put my car was maybe the most decent thing they provided except the lock they used it one u can prly get from dollar general....well in my advice if u have the extra 25 bux just spend it because the stay was horrific!

Hotel riviera is an excellent hotel. The location, the room itself, and of course the price is outstanding. And the accomdations in the room is beautiful. The hararrasment of certain staff members. Especially the security guard whose name I think is haran and the early morning management who refuse to give up his name. Very rude, intimidating, and abusive of power.

Price is good. Gym, cable TV, and strong online network are good for spending time. Bathroom is clean. Room is spacious. Location is bad. So dangerous. Not for Asian. And bathroom doesn't have soaps and dryer.
