The hotel rooms are cosy and comfortable, the staff is friendly and helpful, and overall, the hotel has a very pleasant atmosphere. In the immediate vicinity there are plenty of places to have breakfast or dinner. It was my first time staying in the Roger Smith, but I will certainly go there again during my next visit to New York.
Nothing to dislike.
The ambience and the artwork and the furniture and the location.
Most of the reception staff were rude. The entire week was a Comedy of Errors. They debited my visa card twice but didn't believe me. They gave us the wrong room. They told me I was mistaken several times when I was correct.
This is an excellent place to stay for the money.
The water pressure on the top floor
no frills but clean and comfortable very friendly staff
too hot in bedroom no control on heating. a little old fashioned needs updating
Clean and cozy room, very nice location as a start for exploring Manhattan.
For this price I would have expected breakfast and at least something like a bottle of water in the room.
Comfortable junior suite (I like the Delux a lot more, but alas travelling for work there was only so much i could charge); genuinely courteous staff; excellent location.
Rooftop bar was lovely.
Wifi didn't work properly, nor did tv or room key.
Old fashioned rooms and cosiness made it surprisingly endearing. Good staff who clearly try hard and more importantly, care. good location.
Noise. it felt as though there was no window in my room. The noisiest room I've stayed in after 34 years of travelling with job and for leisure. The first time I've used ear plugs - not good after a flight from the UK and you go to bed after almost 24 hours on the go. Double-glazing! Very tired decor.
The location was great and the hotel has a cosy personal feel. Sophia on the desk was brilliant and absolutely made the stay....a real 'can do' lady. Rooms a good size, beds comfortable, wifi reliable and quick and the 24/7 granola and yogurt bar was the perfect breakfast. Loved Henry's rooftop bar on 16th floor.
Being an old hotel, it was noisy, even on 13th floor-that's just NYC I suppose but it does impact on sleep! The older guy on the desk was very negative and unhelpful when asked simple questions-a real contrast to Sophia. It advertises a restaurant but we never found it open tho we stayed a week! (Lexington Brass close by was excellent at all times of the day though)
sophie at the front desk is very good. rooms are great with nice touches like books!
when you arrive there is noone at the door to help with your luggage You have to go in and find someone. Bellhops with uniforms would be helpful hard to know who is an employee or guest sometimes.
The Location good, the staff is very helpful, the suites are very roomy and the food ordering system is great! The value is just excellent!
The hotel interior is dated, and our bedroom was a little too noisy. Could use newer air-conditioning units.
Comfy bed, good pillows; a/c worked well, yogurt and granola in lobby nice plus
Plenty of rooms available but given very loud Lexington side room near elevator, bathroom floor dirty at check in with hair balls and toilet paper scraps, TV did not work, in room coffee is horrible and only option is sugar, no replacement on coffee for second night even though asked at front desk, no concierge, front desk did not know the area or what vegetarian means, roof bar tiny and rarely open and never late, bathroom sink partially stopped up, tub didn't drain well, shabby, electrical situation with extension cords may be a hazard
Roger Smith is a great place to stay for business. Never let's me down. Best beds in NY!
Having to leave
Location. Free yogurt and granola.
Room was big but bathroom was too small. Can not even move. It was old hotel and very dark. It did not looked clean.
The size of the room. Complimentary yogurt and granola the kids liked. It was a bit far from Times Square and Central Park but not too far either way you would need to take a cab someplace if you want to see New York City
Helpful front desk's staff
not much of a lobby.
The room was big enough to comfortably accommodate the two of us, a six year old and a teenager. Spacious and clean. It had a lived in feel with lots of old world charm. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. They allowed us to leave our bags earlier than the check in time and later than our check out time the next day so we could explore the sites without the hassle of lugging them around. Beds were comfortable and the room was so quiet which was a nice surprise considering we were right in the heart of NYC! We will choose this hotel next year!
Some stains on the carpet, but on the other hand, I wasn't overly concerned if my little guy spilled his drink. Would have enjoyed having a cocktail on the rooftop bar, but it was closed due to the weather. (Not a true negative comment since the hotel had no control of the weather. But maybe an option to bring drinks back to the room when weather is inclement?)
Relative big room and good location Style of the hotel No breakfast, but free yogurt in the lobby
lots of noice from the street, despite the fact we were staying on the 15th floor. communication on conditions unclear e.g. initial offer on booking .com was different from confirmation WATCH OUT!
they don't serve breakfast
Beds were excellent; service from changing a lightbulb on was excellent and quick.
While there is a coffee machine in the room, it makes lousy coffee, but Starbucks is 15 feet away.
The room was clean, comfortable and conveniently located.
I requested an additional bed and it was not in our room for arrival. When I requested it I was told the room was too small and it would be an additional fee. I needed to show my confirmation that an extra bed had been reserved. Additionally, we were told parking was available at a discounted rate; it was not clearly communicated what parking garages were discounted. Much to our dismay the parking garage we accessed closest to the hotel was not the garage for arranged discounts.
The location was fantastic. Close to Grand Central so access to the city was a breeze. Cute decor.
Street noise was terrible. No real way to control the room temperature as the heating and cooling systems are primitive. I'm basing this on other NY hotels we have stayed in. You would expect street noise and dated systems but this was beyond what we have encountered before.
The location was perfect for our midtown business meetings. The high class environment was a pleasant surprise given the lower price and the older, smaller hotel.
The narrow halls and tiny elevator made for a somewhat claustrophobic feel but worth putting up with for the great price and convenient location.
