Very comfortable bed. Staff refused to even acknowledge problems. Window blinds about to fall off. Very very loud open air nightclub next to hotel, which has no a/c so you have to keep your window open at night. That nightclub is against one entire side of hotel the adjacent side is the extremely noisy alleyway entrance to said nightclub. Also the trashcans for the nightclub, hotel, restaurant and more are all put at the end of that alley, so every other morning there is a very loud trash truck dumPing trashcans for almost an hour starting at 7am! Hotel staff knows which room his calling so your calls will be mysteriously dropped as picked up. And the best part: despite having the do not disturb sign on the door and saying No, do not disturb after this person knocked and said housekeeping they keyed the lock and tried to come in anyway, luckily I set the door catch.

I thought that everything was extremely good at the hotel. The service was fantastic, the amenities were great and the design and layout of the hotel was superlative. I would wholeheartedly recommend the hotel to anyone, particularly business professionals visiting San Francisco as well as young couples as the area around the hotel, at least a few blocks east is very romantic, beautiful, vibrant and full of character. The only thing that was a little bit concerning was the noise around the hotel from the exterior at night. The hotel I slocated on the cusp of entering the tenderloin, which does have a 'reputation' for not being that nice of an area of the city. There were constant sirens and there was also screaming from outside at times, noty to mention loud people outside who likelky had had a bit too much drink. Still, it may in fact be part of the 'charm' of the hotel California that it borders the beautiful and ritzy shopping district along Geary in and around Union Square on one side and the less aethestically pleasing tenderloin/little Saigon area. Still, overall my experience with the hotel was fantastic and I look forwrad to staying there hopefully again on my next trip to the bay area.

Location was quite good as it was very near Union Square so good if you wanted to go shopping. There was a funny smell in the hotel, not very bad but strange and also because of where my room was it tended to be noisy at night with people passing the door.

We liked the old charm of the hotel, which is why we chose to stay there. We loved the staircase leading to all the floors and used it more often than the elevators. Even the elevator was authenticly old, with wooden doors requiring manual opening at each floor. The room was small, but very clean and charming with windows to actually open. The proximity to Union Square is another postive factor, as we were able to walk to most places that we went, including the Ferry Building and access to the Cable cars. I did not like the dining area. I feel it was the most misrepresented by the photos. The chandeliers in the pictures look like they may be metal or art deco, and are instead fish netting, which was quite unattractive hanging there. The chairs were a dirty white vinyl, or possible leather, but definitely needed a good cleaning.

The location and the comfortable bed.. The safety deposit box in the room did not work, and despite several requests at reception it was never fixed. This was not a problem as I was able to store valuables in the safety deposit boxes at the reception, but it was a bit inconvenient.

Good price Elevator always broken and if it work, it's very slow. We have to carry our laggages to 3rd floor and carry down when check-out. I stay for 4 nights only can use it 2-3 times.

Did you know they give you free tequila when you check in!? Clean, small room. Very close to many different and excellent restaurants. Small and slow elevator -- hope you're not on the top floor.

It suited my purposes well: a comforable, clean, trustworthy place to stay relatively close to my conference, while not in the conference. I do not like staying in a large conference hotel because I like to sleep in a quiet room without the noise and dry air of airconditioning; a room that has a window that can open and stay open while I sleep. This was what the Hotel Calofornia provided. I did not think the hotel was particularly cheap.

Convenience of the city center location. The price was not so great (149 usd) compared to the level of facility (old bldg with funny smell) and breakfast (very basic with not much more than bread/bagel/cereal).

Beautifully restored. Great restaurAnt off lobby but breakfast fair at best. Shot of tequila an interesting touch. Best thing is San Francisco Worst thing is San F. It is dirty and panhandlers and homeless are everywhere. Union Square looks like nyc 30 years ago

The location and price were great. Cute rooms. Breakfast and pm wine was a nice plus. Loud noise from an outdoor bar next to the hotel. No air conditioning, but ceiling fan seemed ok.

The staff is simply fantastic. Reliable and helpful. Each time I've been there. The rooms can seem a little small, especially if the rates are on-par with some of the more prestigious hotels in the area at some times of the year.

Friendly front office staff. Cool idea with the welcoming shot. Recommended the worst resturant I have ever been to in my life in ChinaTown - the something and something lounge - and I'm 58 and have been all over the world. Not the resturants fault, but hands down the worst dining experience in my life.

Good value for the money. Staff was very responsive. Enjoyed our stay. Because of no AC we had to open our window. Quite noisy at night but Hotel provided ear plugs and that worked great.

I felt very comfortable at The Hotel California. The staff were wonderful - always smiling and ready to help. The also recommended two terrific restaurants. It was noisy, as I had heard before booking, especially since I was right across from the elevator which closed with a bang every time. However, I am a very light sleeper and I will tell you that I slept like a baby every night.

Welcome from staff Our booking was not recorded - apparently "the fax was not received". We were "upgraded" to a "suite" - we would never have called it a suite. The photos on line were we felt rather deceiving. It was incredibly noisy and we got almost no sleep. The restaurant is run independantly to the hotel - we were unable to get a seat for dinner that night after we arrived, even to sit at the bar and eat. Breakfast the next morning can only be described as extremely basic - and we are not particularly fussy. We checked out and went to another hotel for the remainder of our time in San Francisco.
